  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to analyze the dietary habits and food intake status according to the prevalence of depression in adults. Methods: A total of 496 subjects, 224 men and 272 women aged 50 to 100 years were recruited from more than 13 cities in Korea. The questionnaires consisted of general characteristics, dietary life status, food intakes, the mean mini dietary assessment and satisfaction with food-related life questionnaire of the subjects to ask according to the degree of depression. Depression status was evaluated according to the Korean form of the Geriatric Depression Scale (K-GDS). Results: All subjects were divided into depression or normal groups; the prevalence of depression was 13.8% (male) and 23.9% (female). People aged 65 or older were more likely to have higher prevalence of depression and to be bereaved. People in the depression group had poor appetite, almost never dined-out, and ate alone. The food intake of miscellaneous cereals, beans, tofu, chicken/duck meat, cabbage, carrot/amber, fungi, apple, pear, strawberry, grapes, and banana was significantly higher in the normal group compared with the depression group. In particular, significantly higher intake of vegetables and fruits was observed in the normal group. In addition, subjects in the depression group ate more fatty meat and were more dissatisfied with food-related life than those in the normal group. Conclusion: The results of this study imply that the prevalence of depression may affect the dietary habits, food intake, and dietary behaviors in the older adult population.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship among the depression, physical condition, daily living activities, and sleep state among old people at elderly care facilities. The subjects include old people aged 65 or older residing at an elderly care facility. At elderly care facilities, the depression of old people was related with the state of vision, mastication ability, quality of sleep, and sleep state. The degree of relation was high in the group with a poor vision, the one with a bad condition of teeth, the one that considered their quality of sleep to be poor, and the one with somnipathy. Their depression had negative correlations with age and positive ones with mastication ability and assessment of quality of sleep. At elderly care facilities, the depression of old people was highly connected with the state of vision, mastication ability, sleep state, and hearing ability. In short, the depression of old people at elderly care facilities is highly connected to the health state perceived individually. The findings point to the importance of close interest in individual health state and management of old people in poor vision, mastication ability in healthcare and nursing intervention.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify factors affecting the perceived health conditions of the elderly in Korea, and to provide basic data on ways to improve the perceived health conditions of the elderly and future direction of the elderly welfare project. As an analysis method, Pearson's correlation was used to examine the correlation betwwen perceived health conditions, ADL, IADL, social participation, depression, nutritional conditions, and multiple regression analysis was used to find out which of these factors influenced. Also, to see the difference in depression according to the degree of perceived health conditions, a post-test(Scheffe) was used after one-way variance analysis(p<0.5). As a result of the analysis, perceived health conditions was positively correlated with ADL, IADL, social participation, and nutritional conditions, and negatively correlated with depressive state. In addition, as a result of examining the degree of depression according to the perceived health status, it showed a significant difference between groups. and the more the group perceived that their health was bad, the more severe it was. perceived health condition was found to be most associated with depressive status. and the positively perceived health conditions showed that the degree of depressive status also decreased, indicating that it is effective to actively manage depression to promote perceived health conditions.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare the nutritional risk, health status and depression levels of young-old (65-74 years) and old-old (75-84 years) women on low-income. Methods: A total of 624 elderly women, each over 65 years of age, participated in this study under the auspices of a community social center. Data were collected from June to August 2011 by means of personal interviews which employed questionnaires. The research tools used in this study were the nutritional risk measuring Mini Nutritional Assesment (MNA) by Kim (2000), perceived health status developed by Lawton et al. (1982), Elderly Depression Criterion developed by Sheikh & Yesavage (1985). The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 12.0 Program. Results: Nutritional risk, perceived health status and depression levels showed a significant difference between young-old and old-old. There was a positive correlation between nutritional risk and depression and a negative correlation between nutritional risk and perceived health status. A 38.2% variance in depression levels of young-old and a 29.7% variance in depression levels of old-old were explained by perceived health status, nutritional risk and the number of people living together. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate variances in depression levels among low - income women differing in age. As a result, the outcomes of this study ought to be employed in the development of future programs aimed at promoting the health of elderly women.

  • This study aimed to verify the reciprocal casual relationship between self-rated health status and depression in the elderly through longitudinal analysis. An autoregressive cross-lagged model was identified. This study analyzed 3,363 elderly people aged 65 or older using the 5th, 6th, and 7th wave data from Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA). The results are as follows. First, self-rated health status had a positive(+) autoregressive effect. Second, depression had a positive(+) autoregressive effect. Third, self-rated health status had a negative(-) cross-lagged effect on depression, but depression was not a casual predictor of self-rated health status. Based on these findings, it was suggested that there is a need for systematic policies to improve basic fitness in the early stages of old age, as well as the need to expand health promotion programs and implement integrated depression management programs.
