  • This survey was performed as a pilot of comprehensive survey of 18-month old infants which is an important period in pediatric dentistry. Through the oral examination of 154 infants of 18-month age, labored at Pusan National University Hospital and Ilsin Christian Hospital, and direct interview with their first caregivers (mother in most cases), we investigated into the state of their weaning and feeding, between-meal snacks, oral hygiene care, tooth eruption and dental caries and obtained the results as follows : 1. 73% of the infants had not yet weaned, and 82% of which were being milked during or before sleep without oral hygine care. 2. Snacks were taken in order of fruits, biscuits, cheese, bread and candies, and beverages in order of water, fermented milks, milk, sugared juice, fresh fruit juice. 61% of the infants ate snacks irregularly. 3. The toothbrush for infants was the most popular way of oral hygiene care. The mean age of initiation of tooth brushing was 13.8 months and the mean frequency was 1.6 times a day. 4. The incisors in all infants, the 1st molars in 86%, and canines in 66% were erupted. The average number of erupted teeth was 14.1. 5. The caries prevalence rate was 27.3% and 73% of total caries was observed in maxillary deciduous incisors. dmft index was 0.97. Through these results, it was concluded that a systematic education about weaning time, mode of snacking and the way of oral hygine care is required for the parents.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the stability and validity of the related factors to the caries incidence according to the duration. The subjects were 249 elementary school students. Among them, the number of male students was 137 (55.0%). In the first year, all subjects gave the responses of the questionnaire composed of demographic variables and oral heath behaviors. They also received oral examination and tests of Dentocult SM and Dentocult LB. In the 2nd-4th year, they received second oral examination for the assessment of caries incidence on permanent teeth. The relation of oral health-related factors with caries incidence was analyzed by chi square method and adjusted Relative Risk (RR). In the caries incidence rate for 1 year, those who had 2 or higher score of dentocult LB was 2.3 times higher than those who had 1 or lower. The caries incidence rate for 2 years was highly associated with caries on deciduous molars and dentocult LB. The caries on deciduous molars showed strong association with the caries incidence for 3 years. It was suggested that the association between the caries incidence and the related factors was different according to the duration. Therefore, dentists could need to consider the visiting period in the education of the risk factors of dental caries.

  • Intellectual disability is an imperfect disorder in which mental development is permanently retarded and development of intellectual ability is inadequate. Having intellectual disabilities makes it difficult to handle their own work and adapt to social life. For this reason, it is difficult to hygienically manage the patient's oral condition, multiple caries are easily observed, and the periodontal disease incidence rate is high. The patient in this case is a 33-year-old female with a mental retardation first grade who had a problem with meals. In first visit, Patients had decreased occlusal vertical dimension and posterior bite collapse due to periodontitis and multiple caries. This case reports a satisfactory functional and esthetic results by reconstructing occlusion using partial removable dental prosthesis.
