  • In this study, the residual strength of CFRP filament winding pressure vessel after low velocity impact was evaluated quantitatively. After impact test, the pressure vessel was sectioned to produce 25 mm-wide ring specimen and the bursting pressure of this specimen was measured. A finite element model was also fabricated to investigate the deformation and stress distribution characteristics of the impacted CFRP vessel. The degradation of the residual strength along with the increase of impact energy was successfully measured and reviewed.

  • The performance of the Type3 hydrogen composite cylinder whose pressure is 70 MPa using hydrostatic cycling test equipment was evaluted in this study. It also includes the finite element method analysis on the performance of the cylinder when the pressure is applied. As a result, cylinder body parts of the Type3 hydrogen composite cylinder, which draws attention with its safe status and the lightness, was ruptured first and the same result has been found out through the finite element method. The dome knuckle and the cylinder body were proved as the weakest parts since the cylinder body parts was expanded under the pressure.

  • This study is intended to experiment performance of pressure relief device and to extend the effective ways to prevent cylinders of NGV from bursting when they are exposed to local fire intensively or when they are overcharged under ambient temperature at fueling stations in summer. In the results of thermal cycling experiments, all products of three companies met the requirements for gas leakage in the qualification criteria between $82^{\circ}C$ and $-40^{\circ}C$. But the o-rings of two companies' specimens among the three companies' specimens got damaged under the accelerated conditions between $135^{\circ}C$ and $-45^{\circ}C$. It took one minute and thirty nine seconds for a glass bulb type of a thermal sensitive type PRD to activate and it took two minutes and thirty one seconds for a fusible plug type of a thermal sensitive type PRD to activate. These results indicated that a glass bulb type of a thermal sensitive type PRD was one minute faster than a fusible plug type of a thermal sensitive type PRD. Under the accelerated condition $135^{\circ}C$, the activation pressure of a pressure sensitive type PRD burst at 32.1 MPa and, under the condition of qualification criteria, it burst from 30.7 MPa to 32.1 MPa.. As a result of the experiment for performance of pressure relief device, in the case of the thermal sensitive type PRD, a glass bulb type is more effective to flame than a fusible plug type. we confirmed that the rupture pressure of a pressure sensitive type PRD could not be affected by temperature and pressure cycling.

  • This paper reports an experimental study of direct containment heating (DCH) which would occur if the primary system pressure is still high at the time of vessel breach during a light water reactor core melt accident. The experiments were conducted in 1/30-scale cavity models of Kori unit 1 and 2 and Young Kwang unit 3 and 4 nuclear power plants. One 1/20-scale model of the Kori plant was also used to investigate the scaling effect. The primary variables in the experiments were initial vessel pressure, vessel breach size and cavity geometry. It is observed that higher initial pressure and larger breach size enhance the melt dispersal fraction. Also, the cavity geometry appears to affect the dispersal rate greatly. A simple correlation of melt dispersal fraction is proposed in terms of nondimensional effective period. This correlation shows good agreement with the present experimental data, the KAIST data and the BNL data.

  • The fiber material properties, elastic constant and strength, are the most important factors among the various material properties for the design of composite pressure vessel, because of it's dominant influence on the performance of composite pressure vessel. That is, the deformation and burst pressure of pressure vessel highly affected by the fiber material properties. Therefore, the establishment of test method for exact fiber material properties is a priority item to design a composite pressure vessel. However, the fiber material properties in filament wound pressure vessel is very sensitive on various processing variables (equipment, operator and environmental condition etc..) and size effect, so that it isn't possible to measure exact fiber material properties from existing test methods. The hydro-burst test with full scale pressure vessel is a best method to obtain fiber material properties, but it requires a enormous cost. Thus, this paper suggests a newly developed test method, hoop ring test, that is capable of pressure testing with ring specimens extracted from real composite pressure vessel. The fiber material properties from hoop ring test method showed good agreement with the results of hydro-burst test with full scale composite pressure vessels.

  • The fuel storage vessel installed in CNG vehicles can be largely divided into 3 parts: head, cylinder, and dome. Studies of the cylinder and dome parts have already been performed, but sufficient design data is not available about the head part. Therefore, expert field engineers heavily depend upon trial-and-error methods. Therefore, FE analysis is performed to review the hot spinning process for forming the head part of the CNG vessel using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. The effects of forming factors on the load were analyzed. The values of the factors were chosen to avoid defects in the head part and buckling, and the forming feasibility of the head part was investigated. Furthermore, a bursting test was performed to evaluate the safety of the storage vessel.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas can be charged up to 85% of cylinder volume by enforcement regulations of safety control and business of liquefied petroleum gas act. The charged mass by enforcement regulations is considered by liquid expansion of internal liquefied petroleum gas at $65^{\circ}C$. But the temperature of liquid would not be suspended under $65^{\circ}C$ in a cylinder or portable vessel at certain situation. In the thermodynamics view point, the cylinder can be exposed to high pressure by liquid expansion. Consequently, it can be possible to potential risk such as physical explosion. Hence, this paper will offer a method of estimated internal pressure by liquid expansion at critical state in the closed system. Also, the structural factor which is given rise to volume increasement of cylinder is offered by experiment. This paper is expected as crucial reference for a cylinder design of liquefied petroleum gas.
