Myxobacteria are Gram-negative soil bacteria known to be a rich source of potentially useful secondary metabolites. We have isolated 204 strains of bacteriolytic myxobacteria from soil samples collected in Korea and determined their 16S rRNA sequences. Sequence analysis of the partially determined 16S rRNA sequences has suggested that 132 isolates (65% of total isolates) belong to the genus Myxococcus and 59 isolates (29% of total isolates) belong to the genus Corallococcus. Meanwhile, 4 isolates appear to be Archangium spp. and the other 4 isolates appear to be Stigmatella spp. Genera of the remained 5 isolates have not been identified because their 16S rRNA sequences are distantly related to those of known myxobacteria.

Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella enterica Typhimurium are hazardous pathogens, especially for ready-toeat foods. For control of pathogens, the virulent bacteriophages were isolated, identified, and applied to infant formula milk and vegetable juice. The phages were isolated from swine feces and identified by morphology and molecular characteristics. ES2 phage for C. sakazakii and ST2 phage for S enterica Typhimurium were identified as Myoviridae and Siphoviridae, respectively. Their burst sizes were $52{\pm}5PFU/cell$ for ES2 phage and $21{\pm}3PFU/cell$ for ST2 phage after latent period of 30-40 minutes. ST2 phage showed higher heat stability at $60^{\circ}C$ than ES2 phage. ES2 phage held the growth of C. sakazakii untill 6 hr afterwhich the number decreased when applied to the infant formula milk and vegetable juice. ST2 phage also showed growth inhibition so that the number of S. enterica Typhimurium decreased. Therefore, virulent bacteriophages might be an agent for the growth inhibition of C. sakazakii and S. enterica Typhimurium in such the ready-to-eat foods.

환기구의 유무, 환기구 설치 대수, 환기구 용량 등을 변수로 한 5개의 시나리오를 가정하여 터널내 연기 온도 분포의 특성을 분석하였다. 해석 결과 환기구의 설치 대수를 증가시킴에 따라 연기 온도는 감소하였으며, 환기구가 2대에서 3대로 증가하는 경우 온도 감소 효과는 크지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 환기구의 용량을 증가시키는 경우 환기구를 설치하는 것과 유사한 온도 감소 효과를 나타내었다.

지난 5월 11일 한국국제보건의료재단(KOFIH)이 개최한 제1회 해외보건의료 우수사례 공모전에서 가톨릭대학교 성의교정 해외의료지원단이 대상의 수상을 차지했다. 가톨릭대 해외의료지원단은 2004년 3월부터 몽골 울란바토르에 설립한 상설 무료진료소 '성 메리 클리닉(St. Mary's Clinic)'을 운영하고 있는데 이는 해외의료봉사의 롤모델로 평가받고 있다. 가톨릭대 해외의료 지원단과 성 메리 클리닉을 만나본다.

Isolation, identification, and culture conditions of a lytic enzyme producing microorganism against Lacto- bacillus plantarum were investigated. The selected strain was gram-positive, rod (0.7 $\times$ 2.7 $\mu$m in size), and non-motile. The strain did not have any flagella and spores. According to its cultural and physiological characteristics, the strain was identified as Bacillus sp. The optimal pH and temperature for the production of lytic enzyme were 8.0 and 30$\circ$C, respectively. The maximum enzyme activity showed 1.5 units/ml in the medium composed of 1% peptone and 0.1% NaCl.
