  • This study is carried out to determine the scavenging effect of resorcinol added into the urea formaldehyde resin on the formaldehyde release of plywood, as the preliminary study of using the phenolic substances. The method for formaldehyde determination used in this report is the improved chromotropic acid determination. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Resorcinol added into the urea formaldehyde adhesive acts as a good scavenger. 4 percent of resorcinol reduced the formaldehyde release to less than half content. 2. Adding resorcinol gave better glue shear strength than that of control, showing the peak of the shear strength, at 2 percent and decreased to the same strength as control along its content of 4 percent. 3. Moisture content of air dried plywood met the standard very well.

  • Four urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins were synthesized as a particleboard (PB) binder with the four different initial formaldehyde/urea mole ratio and the final mole ratio of 1.15. The UF resins were characterized according to the standard method of resin adhesive analysis. PBs were manufactured using liquid UF resins at 5 minutes press time and 6% resin solids levels on an ovendry particle weight basis. A total of 20 PBs was fabricated for 5 panel replication per UF resin types. The panels were tested for physical strength properties per the procedure ASTM D 1037. The formaldehyde emission levels from the PBs bonded with the UF resins were tested according to 2-hour desiccator test method ASTM D 5582. There were no significant differences among UF resin types for internal bond strength of PBs. But there were significant differences among UF resin types for formaldehyde emission level of PBs. The results showed that the formaldehyde emission level was influenced by the UF resin types without reducing the adhesive performance.

  • In this study, manufacturing process for microcapsules with the self-healing agent was introduced and the characteristics of microcapsules manufactured by varying with various manufacturing process variables were evaluated through a particle size analyzer, an optical microscope, and a TGA. Urea-formaldehyde resin was used for the thin wall of microcapsules and DCPD (dicyclopentadiene) was used for the self-healing agent. The various manufacturing process variables, such as (1) 24hr, 40hr, 48hr, 60hr of the solution time of the EMA copolymer, (2) pH3.5, pH4.0, pH4.5 of the hydrogen ion concentration of the emulsified solution, (3) 400rpm, 500rpm, 600rpm, 1000rpm of the agitation speed of the emulsified solution, (4) $50^{\circ}$, $55^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ of the reaction temperature of the emulsified solution, were considered. According to the results, the particle size distribution of microcapsules was affected on the agitation speed, and the thermal stability of microcapsules was influenced by the solution time of the EMA copolymer, the hydrogen ion concentration, and the reaction temperature of the emulsified solution. Therefore, suitable manufacturing process variables should be applied to obtain thermally stable microcapsules capable of containing the healing agent capable until the thin wall of microcapsules were to be burned.

  • In this study, eco-friendly hybrid composite boards were manufactured from green tea and wood fibers for application as interior materials with various functionalities of green tea and strong strength properties of wood fibers. In this relation, the effect of green tea content on the static bending strength performances of these green tea and wood fibers composite boards were investigated. Static bending strengths of hybrid composite boards were lower than those of control boards and decreased with the increase of green tea content. Also, the strength performances appeared to be somewhat different by resin type used for board manufacture. The hybrid composite boards manufactured from $E_1$ grade urea resin adhesive, which has higher molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea than that of $E_0$ grade one, were 1.08~1.53 times higher in bending modulus of elasticity (MOE) and 1.19~1.82 higher in modulus of rupture (MOR) than that manufactured from $E_0$ grade. And, the differences of MOE and MOR between hybrid composite boards manufactured from $E_0$ grade and $E_0$ grade urea resin adhesive increased with the increase of green tea content. In the case of hybrid composite boards manufactured from $E_1$ grade urea resin adhesive, the MOR was within 0.94~1.03 times the commercial medium density fiberboard. Thus, it was thought that eco-friendly hybrid composite boards with various functionalities and strong strength performances could be manufactured from green tea and wood fibers.

  • This study discusses the feasibility of coffee bean residue as a raw material of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). In this relation, the effect of coffee bean residue known as an absorbent material on the physical and mechanical properties of MDF manufactured at its different addition level. Coffee bean residue which is a by-product of coffee mill and large amount of waste left over after processing for instant coffee was added at the level of 3, 6, and 9% on dry basis and urea formaldehyde resin was used as the adhesive. The MDF made with mixture of wood fiber and coffee bean residue was tested for physical and mechanical properties as well as formaldehyde emission. The bending strength and internal bonding strength of the MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue were higher than that of the KS standard in randomized mat structure type, but not in layered mat structure type. Also, the physical properties of MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue showed a considerable improvement in thickness swelling over the commercial MDF. More importantly, the formaldehyde emission rate of MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue met the KS standard and was close to that of commercial MDF. These results showed the feasibility of coffee bean residue as a raw material for the production of environmentally-friendly MDF. Additional works on adhesive-coffee bean compatibility, improvement of moisture absorption effect and reduction the formaldehyde emission rate by carbonization of coffee bean residue may be required.

  • In the present study, rapeseed flour (RSF), which is a by-product from the production of edible oil and biodiesel extracted from rapeseed, was used to develop alternative adhesives for the production of plywood panels. To examine the effects of the enzyme on the adhesive properties and formaldehyde emission of the RSF-based adhesive resins, three enzymes, such as cellulase (CEL), pectinase (PEC) and protease (ALC), were used either separately or together. As a crosslinking agent, PF prepolymers, which were prepared with 1.5, 1.8 and 2.1 mole formaldehyde and 1 mol phenol (1.8-, 2.1- and 2.4-PF), were added into the RSF hydrolyzates. The adhesive resins formulated with CEL- or CEL-PEC-RSF hydrolyzates and 1.8-F/P PF prepolymers exhibited excellent adhesive strengths and formaldehyde emission. The tensile shear strength and formaldehyde emission of the plywood panels bonded with the formulate resins were satisfied with the minimum requirement of the KS standard for ordinary plywood panels (0.6 N/$mm^2$). In addition, formaldehyde emissions of the plywood panels approached to that of E0 specified in the KS standard (0.5 mg/${\ell}$), and even had much better than those of commercial UF glue mixes. Overall, the use of RSF-based adhesive resins for the production of plywood panels might provide durable adhesive properties and an environmentally friendly substitute for petroleum-based adhesive resins. However, further researches - the increase of solid content of RSF-based adhesives for reducing press time and the microscopic observation of plywood specimen for identifying the relationship between tensile shear strength and the penetration of adhesives into wood structure - are required to commercialize the RSF-based adhesives.

  • The overlaid panels are important materials in interior and construction with added surface layers (PVC films, decorative paper, decorative veneer). Generally, the adhesive for decorative veneer to wood-based panel is urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesive which cause the emission of formaldehyde during not only the manufacturing process, but also service life. In this study, environment-friendly SIS-based hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) was evaluated as a adhesive for bonding a decorative veneer. The various SIS-based hotmelt PSA was blended as a function of diblock content, softening point of tackifier, tackifier content, and applied to bonding the decorative veneer.
