  • Innovation is essential for the survival of a company in the fierce competitive environment of the global era of borders along with rapid technological development and changes from the environment. It is very important to secure your own competitive advantage. In this study, the relationship between internal R&D capability and organizational support as a company internal factor and external R&D capability, external knowledge search, and absorptive capability as a company external factor on performance was examined. As a result of the analysis, it was found that internal R&D capability, organizational support, and external knowledge search had a significant effect on absorptive capability, and innovation performance had a positive effect on new product performance. However, the mediating effect of absorptive capacity has not been verified, suggesting that absorptive capacity has a low correlation between innovation performance and new product performance, or that other important factors act between absorptive capacity and performance variables. The results of this study are expected to be utilized as useful guidelines when establishing R&D strategies in companies.

  • This paper deals with a case which is focused on the policy development connected with IT, and verify its validity to enhance R&D capability for Korean steel industry. Korean steel industry, which is at a turning point from technological catch-up to technological frontier, should go ahead with open R&D system to be able to connect with other steel companies, universities and laboratories for its capability buildup. To meet such a challenge, IT should act a critical part in R&D capability enhancement. In this study we discuss not only IT-related support policies and validity of proposed policies through priority analysis, but also the role of government, company and academia within the framework of Triple Helix.

  • The study examined the effect of collaboration with external institution on new product sales, the mediating effects of technological innovation, and the moderating effect of marketing capability. The results showed that external collaboration with external institution has a significant impact on new product sales in the R&D field of SMEs, and technological innovation plays a mediating role in the relationship between collaboration with external institution and new product sales. Also, the effect of marketing capability in the relationship between technological innovation and new product sales was also significant. Finally, the mediating effect of technological innovation between collaboration with external institution and new product sales was moderated by marketing capability.

  • This study analyzed the impacts and factors of the government's local industry upbringing policy on business growth. We analyzed the effect of product innovation and technological innovation on business competence, external cooperation level, R&D investment, and corporate growth using PLS(Partial Least Squares) structural equation. The results show that management competence and external cooperation level have a significant effect on firm growth and that there is a moderating effect between beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries. Management competence affects product innovation. Product innovation was analyzed to have mediating effects on firm growth. Finally, the policy direction of increasing managerial capacity is presented, and the limitations and future research directions are suggested.

  • The present study analyzed the effect of firms' external research and development (R&D) on corporate productivity, while investigating the moderating effect of firm size on the external R&D-productivity nexus. In the empirical analysis, we estimated South Korean manufacturing firms' total factor productivity (TFP) using the firm level data drawn from the Survey of Business Activities (Korea National Statistical Office) for the years 2006-2015. Thereafter, focusing on the role of external R&D and its interaction with the firm size in determining firms' TFP, the productivity function was estimated as well. To this end, we used ordinary least squares (OLS) and quantile regression to highlight the heterogeneous impacts of external R&D by companies' productivity level. Empirical results confirmed that firms' external R&D significantly enhanced corporate productivity in all manufacturing industries, from high-tech to low-tech. The moderating effect of firm size in determining the productivity effect of external R&D was not as prominent as in the case for internal R&D, which exhibited some degree of the size premium in the productivity-enhancing effect. These results suggest that regardless of the firm size, external R&D can be an important channel for corporate productivity improvement, and can be a particularly effective strategy for SMEs with relatively limited internal R&D capacities.

  • This Study Investigates Whether R&D Capabilities and Market Orientation have Significant Effects on Product Innovation Performance in Order to Enhance Customer Value and Technology Innovation Competitiveness Considering the Characteristics of Rapidly Changing Semiconductor Industry. In other Words, as in the Research Model, the Purpose of this Study is to Investigate the Causal Relationship between the Independent Variable, R&D Capability and Market Orientation, on Product Innovation Performance, which is a Dependent Variable, through the Moderating Variable of Technological Innovation Orientation. For this Study, we Conducted a Questionnaire Survey on the Employees of Development Companies in the Semiconductor Industry and Finally Collected 118 Valid Questionnaires. The Collected Data was Analyzed by Multiple Regression Analysis with Demographic Characteristics as Control Variable and Hierarchical Regression Analysis was Conducted with the Moderating Effects of Technological Innovation Orientation. The Results Showed that the Higher the R&D Intensity and the External Network Capacity, the Higher the Product Innovation Performance. Also, the Product Innovation Performance was Higher than the Customer Orientation and Competitor Orientation Among the Market Orientation. In Addition, only R&D Capability Confirms that Technology Innovation Orientation is Moderated. The Result of this Study is to Improve Understanding of R&D Capability and Market Orientation in Creating of Product Innovation Performance of Semiconductor Companies and to offer Valuable Research Data in Empirically Supporting that Technological Innovation Orientation is an Important Moderating Factor in Creating Firm's Product Innovation Performance and Sustainable Competitive Advantage.

  • This paper aims to analyze the relationship between R&D outsourcing ratio (external R&D expenditures out of total R&D expenditures) and firm characteristics. Four hypotheses are tested using firm-level data with Tobit regression method. The major findings of this paper are as follows. First, firms with high technological capabilities, which are measured by R&D expenditures per sale and the number of patents per employee, rely more on R&D outsourcing. Nonetheless, firms that own R&D centers tend to rely less on external outsourcing of R&D. Second, firms with high managerial innovation capabilities, which is measured by the introduction of IT solutions, show higher R&D outsourcing ratio. Third, bigger firms are likely to spend more in external R&D than in internal R&D. This paper also discusses implications on R&D policy of Korea.

  • This research focuses on what factors determine firm's decisions on R&D outsourcing and how R&D outsourcing affect R&D performance. In recent years many firms outsource R&D activities instead of internalizing it. Thus, further investigation is necessary to find out this recent trend. Based on several theoretical background the study developed three determining factors of R&D outsourcing which are transactional level, firm level, and risk level. Transactional level composes of independent variables such as R&D cost saving, asset specificity and uncertainty which mainly comes from Transaction Cost Economics theory. Firm level composes of openness to technology from outer source, R&D capability, and outsourcing experience. Risk level composes of technological risk, cost-related risk and managerial risk. The result shows that R&D outsourcing is significantly related to cost saving aspect, low asset specific firms, firms without solid technological background, firms which are open to external technology, firms with other types of outsourcing experience, and firms which take technological risks. However, proposed relationship between degree of R&D outsourcing and R&D performance found out to be insignificant. This research is contribute to the field of outsourcing study since it will give guidance to managers who need to make strategic decisions on R&D outsourcing activities.

  • Firms must focus on innovative activities via R&D investment in order to secure competitive advantage and sustainable growth. However, their innovative activities do not always result in successful outcomes and are often obstructed by uncertainty and non-appropriability of technology being developed and by insufficient internal resources and capabilities to tap into it. In this situation, collaboration with external partners can be a part of good alternative strategy to solve those problems. This paper aims to analyze what factors lead to Korean manufacturing companies’ decision to collaborate with external partners for technology innovation. For empirical analysis, we used the Korean Innovation Data compiled by STEPI, government-funded research institute in Korea. The research findings are: 1) firms tend to participate in external collaboration for product innovation with greater firm size, more past collaboration experiences and when they belong to high-tech industries 2) unlike our expectation, our chosen ‘innovation-impeding’ factors are found not to contribute to the enhancement of collaboration for product innovation.
