  • Five species of the genus Leontopodium are recognized in Korea, but their taxonomic positions have been controversial. To clarify the taxonomic entity of these Korean species, we examined their morphological characters based on herbarium specimens and field observations. Valuable distinguishing characters for identification included the plant height, the basal shape of cauline leaves, the type and position of inflorescence, the types of hairs, the presence of leaves at the anthesis, and hairs on the phyllaries. Based on our observations, we were able to determine the taxonomic relationships between L. japonicum and its relatives, L. coreanum and L. hallaisanense. We also included the morphological characters of L. seorakensis in continuous variations of L. leiolepis, which we treated as synonyms. Consequently, we classified these Korean Leontopodium species into four taxa - L. coreanum var. coreanum, L. coreanum var. hallaisanense, L. leiolepis, and L. leontopodioides - with appropriate descriptions and illustrations.

  • Age variation and secondary sexual dimorphism in four external and 27 cranial characters of 102 specimens of striped firld mice, Apodemus agrarius coreae Thomas, from Cheongju, Korea, were analyzed statistically. Specimens were classified as subadults, young adults, middle-aged adults, and old adults, and variation of morphometric characters among the four age classes was evident. Significant secondary sexual dimorphism among sexes of the same age class was not revealed. Teh specimens of the same age class have to be used in further analyses to clarify geographic variation of morphometric characters in Apodemus agrarius from Korea.

  • To address infra-specific relationships of Sedum kamtschaticum Fisch., and to provide the fundamental information for developing new horticultural variations, we analyzed the morphology of individuals in four natural populations (Mt. Gwangdeok, Mt. Samyeong, Mt. Yonghwa, Tongyeong) and investigated the vegetations of these area. Based on 50 morphological characters the principle component analysis (PCA) has been performed. Principle component axis 1, 2, and 3 explain 22.9%, 14.2%, and 7.4% of total variations, respectively. Dot plot of OTUs in PC2 by PC1 area showed that the areas of four populations are completely overlapped. The result of PCA and the statistics of each character indicate that all of morphological characters are overlapped in these four populations. The maximum deviations are found in the characters related in the size and shape of the leaf. In the vegetation analyses, eighteen community plots that we investigated were grouped into 10 subcommunities: subcomm. Boehmeria spicata, subcomm. Artemisia stolonifera, subcomm. Artemisia keiskeana, subcomm. Impatiens nolitangere, subcomm. Crepidiastrum chelidoniifolium, subcomm. Urtica thunbergiana, subcomm. Artemisia gmelini, subcomm. Commelina communis, subcomm. Erigeron annuus-Artemisia princeps, and typical subcommunity.

  • Cymopterus melanotilingia (Apiaceae) was reviewed by external morphology and cross-section of leaf-margin and mericarp, and the taxonomic position of species and genus was reexamined. Based on these results, the description and adistribution map of C. melanotiligia were obtained. The leaf-margin forms a collenchymatous ridge by projecting toward the lower part. One mericarp has 2-lateral ribs and 2-intermediate ribs and the other mericarp has 2-lateral ribs and 1-dorsal rib, suggesting each of them is asymmetric. These characters show that this species does not belong to the genus Ostericum s.s., but should be treated as the genus Cymopterus.

  • Saussurea chabyoungsanica was recorded in new species by Lim hyoung tak in 1997. In order to understand the entity of new species, we investigated the new distribution sites, general morphological characters, the width of variation among regional groups. S. chabyoungsanica were located Manduckbong, Mt. Sukbyoung, Mt. Duckhang, and Sukgaejae in ridgeline of the Taebaek mountains. These sites are typical limestone zones of Korea. As a result of PCA analysis for external morphology of S. chabyoungsanica and S. neoserrata, S. neoserrata group was distinctly discriminated from S. chabyoungsanica group. And it was considered that the characters of leaf, corolla and involucral bract were major factors of cumulative rate. And also, through the analysis of external morphology of S. chabyoungsanica by region, Mt. Sukbyoung group was discriminated from other groups.

  • Vegetative characters (e.g. habitat, root, ramification and habit of stem, phyllotaxy, leaf sape, shape of leaf margin, shape of division and lobe of division, number of division, thick and texture of leaf and shape of stipule) on 35 species of Asian Geranium were reviewed to discussion propriety of taxonomic character and evolutionary trends. Wilfordii group is characterized by three divided leaf, Farreri group was grown a high altitude, and Maculatum group is grouped by life cycle of anneal. Arrangement state of leaf is alternate type G, tripartitum, G. eriostemon, and G. erianthum is thought the more primitive than the other taxon, and regarded as more advanced group the sibiricum group and pseudosibiricum group which divided of leaf deeply. Shape of leaf, division degree of lobes, shape of leaf margin and number of division are considered a good identification characters because width of change are fixed between population.

  • The morphological characters and scientific names on 3 taxa of Korean Euphorbia were reviewed. Growing pattern of stems, arrangement of leaves, the presence of appendages, the presence of ovary's hairs, shape of seeds and the presence of caruncles were valuable characters in identifying the taxa. The correct scientifie names of Nang-dok, Keun-ttang-bin-dae and Ae-gi-ttang-bin-dae were E. fischeriana, E. hypericifolia and E. maculata respectively based on the morphological characters, the type specimens and the original descriptions. Keys to the species were provided for the accurate identification.

  • Five commercially valuable Korean Veneroid, Protothaca jedoensis, Ruditapes philippinarum, Saxidomus purpuratus, Cyclina sinensis and Meretrix lusoria were recognized by comparing internal and external morphological characters. As length of the primary tooth was directly grown proportional to shell size but all other characters were not measured according to size of shell. Hence, the morphological characters of these Veneroids may be estimated from the size of the unique primary tooth and it might be enough to be a good criterion for identification of species among Veneriods. Numerical index of hinge plate length of these species was assessed systematically, irrespective of measuring the length, height and width of the shell. The highest internal and external morphological similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and R. philippinarum and the lowest similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and M. lusoria. These similarities may be affected by multiple environmental factors as well as genetic characters. For artificial seed production of P. jedoensis, R. philppinarum, a closest relative among the five species, must be focussed.

  • Although a few recent taxonomic studies focusing on infraspecific taxa in each species of Isodon have been reported, a detailed taxonomic revision of the Korean Isodon taxa has yet to be performed. We investigated the morphological characters of Korean Isodon based on approximately 600 herbarium sheets from major herbaria in Korea and Japan. We identified characters which distinguish seven Korean Isodon taxa and created a key to Korean Isodon based on the results from this study and on recent studies of the Korean Isodon taxa. The following unique characters for several taxa were recognized: 1) dense non-glandular hairs in stems for I. inflexus var. canescens (over 70 ea/mm on one side of the stem), 2) dense glandular hairs on the abaxial surface of the leaf for I. serra (over $40ea/mm^2$), 3) protruding pistils and stamens from the corolla with the length of the protruding part longer than that of the lower lobe of corolla for I. japonicus, and 4) the presence of non-glandular hairs on the entire surface of the fruit of I. inflexus var. microphyllus. Based on this study, we recognized that there are four species, two varieties, and one forma of Isodon taxa in Korea.

  • For nine taxa of the genus Carex which consist of C. arenicola, C. chordorhiza, C. curta, C. gibba, C. laevissima, C. leiorhyncha, C. neuromrpa, C. maakii and C. remouscula with mixed pistillate and staminate flowers, morphological characters such as inflorescense, spikelet, inflorescence bract, utricle, pistillate and staminate scales, achene, length between two spikelets were observed to find useful characters for their identification. Especially, the shape and the number of spikelet were very useful characters to divide the treated nine taxa into two groups, the their keys were prepared. The first group was comprised of five species of C. arenicola, C. chordorhiza, C. curta, C. gibba, and C. remouscula, which were characterized by broadly oboval or narrowly elliptical shape of spikelet, and 3-9 spikelets per infIorescence and gradual decrease in length between two spikelets. The second group was composed of four species of C. laevissima, C. leiorhyncha, C. neurocarpa, C. maakii, which were distinguished by oval shape of spikelet, and 17-20 spikelets per infIorescence and repetition of increase.
