  • In this study, the PSC girder bridge retrofitted with external tendons is tested to verify the strengthening effects. We measure the variations of the displacement and strain at mid-span of each beam as external tendons are removed in sequence. The structural behavior of the bridge are examined using controlled truck load tests for the systems before and after all external tendons were removed. From the test results, the characteristics of structural behavior of the bridge do not change significantly, but the natural frequency is decreased after the external tendons are removed. The strengthening effects of bridges can be exactly estimated by analytical methods some extent. As a result of this study, when a PSC girder bridge is deteriorated, the bridge can be retrofitted effectively by External Prestressing Strengthening Method, and the strengthening effects can be predicted through accurate structural analysis.

  • Many composite girder bridges have been constructed for about thirty five years. Nowadays they are aged or deteriorated because of the increase in traffic and vehicle loads. In this study, the effect of strengthening with glass fiber sheet is investigated to estimate the possibility for applying to damaged prestressed concrete bridges. One normal and eight cracked specimens which had been preloaded were tested. The cracked specimens were strengthened with either external prestressing or bonding glass fiber sheet, or using both methods. The results showed that the maximum loads are almost same for both methods. So it seems that the strengthening with glass fiber sheet can be used for strengthening damaged prestressed concrete girders. It is important that proper devices should be selected to prevent glass fiber sheet from premature bonding failure below its maximum load, which is similar to end anchorage problem in external prestressing method. It is proved that the devices proposed in this paper have sufficient anchoring capability to increase load carrying capacity.

  • An effective method was proposed in this study which can improve the strengthening effect of continuous girder bridges by external tendons. The improvement of the proposed strengthening method in comparison with conventional methods was analyzed by applying equivalent load concept. In order to verify the strengthening effect, the enhancement of load-carrying capacity achieved by external prestressing was investigated through the test of continuous beams that were or were not strengthened by the external prestressing. The continuous beams were fabricated by making the deck slab continuous according to general construction practice of an actual concrete girder bridge. The test results showed that the deflections and strains of the strengthened beam were significantly reduced when comparing with those of the non-strengthened beam for the same level of external loads, and the stiffness of the member increased by strengthening. In particular, it was verified that the proposed method can effectively reduce the tensile stresses of the deck caused by negative moment at the intermediate supports of a continuous bridge.

  • Most experiments carried out in the previous studies dealt with the highly reinforced concrete beams (RC beams) in case of rehabilitating with external tendon. However, the reinforcing effect of external tendons cannot be clearly analyzed in this kind of RC beams because the rehabilitating tendon quantity for it is too small. By this reason, this study chose the low RC beams rehabilitated with external tendons. Therefore, in this study, 7 test beams were manufactured and flexural behavior tests were performed to assess the reinforcing effect and to find more proper rehabilitating method by external tendon. The reinforcing effect increased according to the quantity of tendons, and was especially added by repairing cracks with epoxy resin. It was shown that the design equations of AASHTO 1994 and ACI-318 did not show a good agreement with test results. The result of this study will be able to be used effectively in finding the more proper rehabilitating method of the damaged RC beams.

  • In the recent construction industry, external tendon method has been widely used for strengthening and repair of civil structures. This paper presents the strengthening effectiveness and application of the proposed external tendons using lifting hole anchorage system. Based on the experimental results of the previous external tendons using lifting hole anchorage systems, two types of modified systems were proposed. In order to verify the strengthening effectiveness of the two systems, six beams were built and a series of experiments was carried out. To compare and analyze the behaviors of the proposed systems, deflections and strains were measured. Additionally, yield load, ultimate load and failure modes were compared and analyzed.

  • In order to strengthen RC structures, various strengthening methods have been used. Particularly, external tendon strengthening method is very popular method to strengthen damaged structures in terms of efficiency, ease, economics. In this study, improved anchorage elements using the lifting hole were proposed to strengthen PSC or RC girder without any damage. Two types of anchorage elements were proposed and these elements were applied on six RC beams. Also, three types of existing anchorage elements were applied on three RC beams. Otherwise, any anchorage element was not applied on one RC beam to used as a control beam. To analyse behavior of these elements, static load tests were carried out. Test variables were anchorage shapes, prestressing level on the steel bar and tendon profiles. Deflections, strains and modes of failure were recorded to examine the strengthening effects of the beams. Ductility index and tendon stress were analyzed by comparing cracking load, yielding load and ultimate load. As a result, proposed anchorage elements using lifting hole were superior to existing anchorage elements in terms of strengthening effect and furthermore, they showed ductile behavior based on energy method.

  • Recently, concrete structures with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcements have been commonly used for the bridge and building construction. In this paper, pier caps were strengthened by prestressed near surface mounted CFRP. To verify the effectiveness of the strengthening method, 7 pier cap specimens were fabricated. One specimen was designed for control, two for external prestressing steel strands, two for CFRP plates, and two for CFRP bars. Experimental variables consist of type of reinforcement materials and prestressing levels. The results of laboratory have shown that the ultimate load capacities of prestressed near surface mounted CFRP specimens were about $20{\sim}33%$ greater than that of a control specimen. Also, ultimate load capacities of prestressed near surface mounted CFRP specimens were similar to those of external prestressing specimens with steel strands.

  • Recently the slab span-jointing method has been employed as one of the retrofit technologies to enhance the capacity of existing simple beam bridges in many cases. In general this method makes simple beam bridges behave like multi-span continuous bridges under service loads excluding self weight in company with external prestress force method in the field. In this paper the continuation effect has been studied for the retrofitted bridges by the experimental and numerical approaches. The results show that the deflections and stresses of members are reduced due to the increase of the total stiffness of bridge system and the efficiency of bridge continuation based on the slab span-jointing method is about 40 % when comparing with the case of continuous bridges.

  • This study was performed to compare the load-carrying capacities of the reinforced concrete structure between the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method and the external post-tensioning method and further estimate the effective stress of the reinforced material by analyzing the experimental reinforcing effect of each method and the behavior resulting from each method. As a result, it was found out that the effective stress of the carbon fiber reinforcement according to the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method had an unexpected value, and also, bearing of the stress was found to be far from sharing thereof. That is to say, while the carbon fiber was bearing the whole stress to some limits, it got to be momentarily ruptured as soon as it went beyond such limits. On the other hand, the external post-tensioning method has the advantage of inducing an initial effective stress by introducing a strain, and thus, it was found that behavior or bearing of the stress was also found to be a solid behavior of the steel wire. This method was also found to be more efficient and excellent than the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method in the reinforcing effect or securing the effective stress. Accordingly, we were to discuss the effective stress as comparatively examined, focusing on deriving of the more enhanced reinforcing effect on the basis of the experiment to which the field characteristic is added.
