Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between appearance perception, appearance satisfaction, and self-esteem in adolescents who demand the orthodontic treatment. Methods : A total sample of 403 high school students filled out the questionnaire and data were analyzed by using SPSS ver 20.0. for n (%), chi-square test, t-test, and a logistic regression. Results : Girl students (68.3%) tended to have a higher demand for orthodontic treatment than male students (31.7%). Higher appearance perception(t=6.967, p<0.001), lower appearance satisfaction(t=-5.477, p<0.001) and lower self-esteem(t=-7.333, p<0.001) were higher in group of demand for orthodontic treatment. The logistic regression analysis revealed that a gender, self-perception of their teeth, appearance perception, and self-esteem were significantly associated with orthodontic treatment demand. Conclusions : The result of this study will provide basic data for the consideration of psychosocial factors in orthodontic treatment in adolescents.

This study investigated the effects of perceived ageism on appearance related quality of life through appearance satisfaction among older Korean women. Testing the proposed model showed associations among variables and the mediating effects of appearance satisfaction in the relationship between perceived ageism and appearance related psychological and social quality of life. Structural equation modeling analyses upheld the proposed model for 221 women aged 60 and over. The results revealed that older women's perception of ageism negatively influenced appearance satisfaction that subsequently affected perceived levels of both psychological and social quality of life in a negative direction. The direct effects of perceived ageism on both psychological and social quality of life were not found; however, the indirect effects of perceived ageism on these two variables through appearance satisfaction were found significant and negative. This indicated a fully mediating effect of appearance satisfaction in the relationships. The results of this study highlight that perceptions of ageism and its association with body image should be considered to understand the overall quality of life among older women.

The aim of this study was to describe the self-esteem, appearance satisfaction, and job-seeking stress and to investigate the effects of self-esteem and appearance satisfaction on job-seeking stress in nursing and healthcare related students. A total of 515 third and fourth year graduate students were included in this study. The data were collected between May 2 and May 13 of 2016 and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS 19.0. The economic state had an influence on self-esteem, appearance satisfaction, and job-seeking stress; however, the motive of application and decision of the department of selection did not have any influence. A positive correlation was found between self-esteem and appearance satisfaction. Moreover, job-seeking stress was negatively correlated with both self-esteem and appearance satisfaction. The strongest predictor of job-seeking stress was self-esteem. Self-esteem, employment-area, satisfaction with major, and college majors accounted for 24.4% of job-seeking stress based on multiple regression analysis. These findings indicate that it is necessary to develop a program that would increase self-esteem and satisfaction with major and decrease job-seeking stress according to college majors and employment-area in nursing and health care related students.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among self-esteem, physical appearance comparison, media concern, sociocultural attitude toward appearance, body attitudes, and life satisfaction. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 232 female undergraduate students. Data were analyzed using factor analysis, correlation, and multiple regression. The result showed that there was a correlation between physical appearance comparison and media concern. Self-esteem, physical appearance comparison, and media concern had an indirect influence on body attitudes through sociocultural attitude toward appearance. Self-esteem and physical appearance comparison had a direct effect on body attitude. All variables did not have an influence on life satisfaction, except self-esteem.
The purpose of this study was to examine the factors affecting subjective body shape perception among female university students. This research conducted a survey targeting 121 female university students. The collected data were analyzed by Pearson's Correlation, Multiple Regression using SPSS/Win 23.0. were identified as factors influencing on subjective body shape perception in female university students. As the results of regression analysis, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, body cathexis, self-esteem, BMI demonstrated significant effects on subjective body shape perception. and these are significantly predicted 46.8% of subjective body shape perception. The factor of the greatest impact on subjective body shape perception is sociocultural attitudes towards appearance. In order to positively change body shape perception, it is necessary to help them perceive their body shape as it is, accept the actual body shape, and have a specific way to be satisfied with their body shape.

This study analyzed the influence of self-construal on sociocultural attitude toward physical appearance, body satisfaction, and appearance management behavior through a structural equation model. The empirical study was based on the response of 369 adult females between the ages of 20 and 49 in Seoul. Self-construal was presented as an independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal, respectively. The sociocultural attitude toward physical appearance as an intermediate variable in the research model was composed of two sub-factors that included internalization and awareness. The other (body satisfaction) was measured by two factors (body and face). Appearance management behavior (as a final outcome variable) were composed of various factors that included clothing concern, skin care, hair care, and weight training. The findings of this study were: 1) the effect of independent self-construal on the sociocultural attitude toward physical appearance was not significantly meaningful; however, interdependent self-construal influenced it positively. 2) Sociocultural attitude toward physical appearance appeared to have a negative effect on body satisfaction. 3) The body satisfaction also had a negative effect on appearance management behavior in this study.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of appearance instrumentality on body satisfaction and appearance management behaviors by adolescent' sex. The subjects were 750 adolescents in Daejeon and Chungnam province. The research method was a survey and the measuring instruments consisted of appearance instrumentality, body satisfaction, appearance management behaviors, and subjects' demographics attributions. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, cluster analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, and t-test, using SPSS statistical program. The results were as follows. First, 3 dimensions(the utility of interpersonal relationship, social achievement and sexual partnership) were emerged on appearance instrumentality, and adolescents were divided into 2 groups(unreceptive and receptive group) by appearance instrumentality. Second, appearance instrumentality had significant effects on female adolescents' body satisfaction; receptive group was more dissatisfied with their bodies, especially weight, hip, abdomen, and body shape than unreceptive group. However, it had no significant effects on male adolescents' body satisfaction. Third, appearance instrumentality had many significant effects on male and female adolescents' appearance management behaviors. Especially, female receptive group had higher intention to perform professional care by a sliming club, beauty salon, and dermatology, and face plastic surgery than unreceptive group.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of appearance concern and body satisfaction on the appearance management behavior of male college students. For data collection, a questionnaire was administrated to 538 male college students in Gwangju city, Korea, from June 1 to June 20, 2011. To analyze the data, the SPSS 18.0 statistics package was used, and descriptive statistical analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis(Cronbach' ${\alpha}$), regression analysis, path analysis, and t-test were conducted. The results were as follows. First, it appeared that concern of appearance had positive influences on the appearance management behavior. Also, there was a significant difference between the high-appearance-concern group and the low-appearance-concern group, as the high-appearance-concern group generally conducted greater appearance management behaviors than the low-appearance-concern group. Second, it appeared that concern of appearance had positive influences on body satisfaction, especially, on the aspect of face-satisfaction. Further, the results showed that the high-appearance-concern group seemed to have a higher body satisfaction than the low-appearance-concern group. Third, the result suggested that body satisfaction generally had positive influences on the aspects of appearance management behavior. Fourth, it was found that appearance concern had direct impact on the appearances management behavior without mediation body satisfaction.

The purposes of this study were to investigate female adolescents' attitude toward the social instrumentality of appearance and to examine the effects of the attitude toward the social instrumentality of appearance on female adolescents' body satisfaction and appearance management behaviors. The subjects for this study were 435 female middle school and high school students in Daejeon and Chungnam province. The research method was a survey and the measuring instruments were a self-administrated questionnaire with 4 parts (social instrumentality of appearance, body satisfaction, appearance management behaviors, and subjects' demographics attributions). The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, cluster analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test, using SPSS statistical program. The results were as follows. Three dimensions (the utility of interpersonal relationship, sexual partnership and social achievement) were emerged on social instrumentality of appearance, and female adolescents were divided into 2 groups(unreceptive group and receptive group) by social instrumentality of appearance. Social instrumentality of appearance had significant effects on female adolescents' body satisfaction and appearance management behaviors. The group who had receptive attitude toward the social instrumentality of appearance was showed the lower body satisfaction and more positive attitude to perform appearance management behaviors including clothing and accessories management, fitness, skin and hair care, and plastic surgery than unreceptive group.
