Immigrants' Micro-Contexts of transnational Migration and Decision-Making Process (외국인 이주자의 미시적 이주배경과 의사결정 과정)

  • This paper explores micro-contexts of transnational migration and decision-making process of foreign migrants in Korea with four types, that is, married immigrants, immigrant workers, professional immigrants, and foreign students, analyzing dates of questionaries and interviews. Some findings can be summarized as follows. First, married immigrants and immigrant workers show relative lower level of micro-environments than professional immigrants and foreign students. Secondly, immigrants workers fill closest in geographical contiguity among immigrants' types, while married immigrants recognize more different in cultural comparison than the former. Both immigrants workers and foreign students think living environments of Korea better than other types, but immigrants workers consider relatively higher the level of technology, while foreign students evaluate lower that of education in Korea than other types. Thirdly, married immigrants give a relatively low score to the easiness of immigration, while both immigrant workers and professional immigrants give a high score to the job environment of Korea. Finally, all types of immigrants show a high portion in a self-decision making for international migration, while professional immigrants have much more experiences on visiting other countries than other types, and both married immigrants and foreign students seem to have utilized their networks with family members who live abroad.

Social Support and Acculturative Stress in Migrant Workers (외국인 노동자의 사회적 지지와 문화적응 스트레스)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to collect basic data on social support and acculturative stress in migrant workers. Methods: Between August, 2007 and January, 2008 171 immigrant workers completed data collection using a questionnaire. Workers were recruited from 2 churches, one in Seoul and the other in Gyeonggi Province. Mean and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results: The average score for social support was 3.73 (${\pm}0.65$) and for acculturative stress, 2.52 (${\pm}0.65$). There were significant differences acculturative stress according to gender (t=2.152, p=.033), kind of job (t=2.597, p=.040), and have community or not (t=2.899, p=.005). There was a significant negative correlation between social support and acculturative stress (r=-.270, p=.001). Factors influencing acculturative stress were existence of participants having a community of people from their home country or not ($R^2=.151$, p=.002). Conclusion: More studies are needed to identify the variables that influence acculturative stress in immigrant workers.

The Relation between Social Support and Loneliness in Migrant Workers (외국인 노동자의 사회적 지지와 외로움과의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual condition of social support and loneliness and to examine of the relation between social support and loneliness in migrant workers. Methods: One hundred and thirty migrant workers were sampled from two churches located at Seoul and Gyeonggi-do in order to collect basic data onmigrant workers from August to December, 2007 using a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test and ANOVA test. Results: 1) The average scores of social support and loneliness were $3.73{\pm}0.31$ and $2.57{\pm}0.31$, respectively. 2) With respect to the general characteristics of subjects, there was no statistically significant difference in social support, but there was a significant difference in loneliness according to religion (t=2.586, p=.001). 3) The correlation coefficient between social support and loneliness was not significant (r=-.010, p=.929). Conclusion: Social support should be considered in nursing intervention to decrease the level of loneliness in migrant workers. More studies are needed to identify variables influencing social support and loneliness in migrant workers.

  • 우리나라가 경제협력개발기구(OECD)에 가입해 선진국 반열에 진입지도 벌써 17년이 지났고, 회원국들 가운데 개발도상국들을 위해 개발 원조를 시행하는 회원국이 된 지도 3년이 되어 간다. 한국전쟁 직후 폐허와 같은 상황 속에서 다른 나라의 원조 없이는 국가를 영위하기조차 힘들었던 우리나라가 당당히 세계의 어려운 나라를 돕는 선진국의 일원이 된 것이다. 하지만 최근 OECD 통계조사 결과를 토대로 살펴본 우리의 현실은 불명예스럽기 그지없다. 특히 결핵의 경우 우리나라 신규 결핵환자 수는 인구 10만 명당 100명 후진국 양상을 보이고 있다. 정말이지, 불명예스런 결과가 아닐 수 없다. 이 같은 사실을 외국인들은 어떻게 받아들이고 있을까? 이를 알아보기 위해 현재 대한결핵협회 홍보대사이자 한국외국인력지원센터에서 외국인노동자 전문 상담원으로 활동 중인 두 인물을 찾았다. 이들의 대화를 통해 앞으로 우리나라가 결핵 선진국 대열로 진입하기 위해 해결해야 할 문제점과 방안은 은 무엇인지 알아보자.

Current Status of Library Services for Immigrants in Korea (이주민을 위한 국내 도서관 서비스의 현황 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to current status of library services for immigrants in Korea, where the number of immigrants reaches one million. To do this, the cases of library services for immigrants in North America and Europe were investigated and persons in charge who work in 10 public libraries and 5 private libraries serving immigrants in Korea were interviewed. Also, research articles, newspapers and related websites are utilized. Current status and limitations of library services for immigrants were discussed and some suggestions were presented.

The Influencing Factors associated Cultural Awareness of Immigrants for Marriage, Foreign Workers in Korean Nursing Students (간호대학생의 결혼이민자 및 외국인노동자에 대한 문화적 인식 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors associated to students nurses' cultural awareness toward immigrants for marriage and foreign workers. Methods: The participants were 107 nursing students in C city in Chungnam province. The data were collected with structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of cultural awareness was 3.67. The degree of cultural awareness was different according to educational experience related multiculture and age. The variables predicting cultural awareness were social distance of foreign workers, emotions of immigrants for marriage and age. These factors accounted for 26% of the variance of cultural awareness in nursing students. Conclusion: The results indicate education related multiculture should be provided to nursing students to reduce the social distance between students and foreign workers and enhance positive emotions for immigrants.

AI-based basic research to predict safety accidents for foreign workers at construction sites (AI기반 건설현장의 외국인 근로자 안전사고 예측을 위한 기본 연구)

  • Compared to other industries the construction industry experiences more casualties and property damage due to safety accidents. One of the reasons is the increasing number of foreign workers. For this reason, past studies have found that foreign workers at construction sites are more exposed to safety accidents than non-foreign workers. Nevertheless the proportion of foreign workers involved in safety accidents at construction sites is increasing, and there has been a lack of research to predict the risk of safety accidents at construction sites. Additionally, realistic safety management is lacking due to a lack of safety accident risk prediction research. Therefore, in this study, we would like to propose basic research that proposes an AI-based safety accident prediction model framework for predicting safety accidents of foreign workers at construction sites. The framework and results of this study will contribute to reducing and preventing the risk of safety accidents for foreign workers through risk prediction for safety management of foreign workers at construction sites.

Foreign Immigrants‘ Recognition on Macro-contexts of Transnational Migration (외국인 이주자의 거시적 이주 배경에 관한 인지)

  • Rapidly increasing transnational migration can be seen as a typical process which has proceeded under macro-contexts of socio-spatial characters of origin and destination country and their relationships, shaped with global uneven regional development in the process of glocalization and development of transportation and communication on the global level. In order to consider macro-contexts of transnational migration, this paper emphasizes the concept of multicultural space and some key elements implied in it, that is, place, territory, network, scale (suggested by Jessop et al.) and spatial flow and difference. As results of questionnaire analysis of foreign immigrants' recognition of macro-contexts, this paper suggests some findings: that is, a high level of recognition of all types of foreign immigrants on global changes, the most negative recognition of migrant workers among 4 types of foreign immigrants on economic and social conditions of their origin country, a positive recognition of people in all regions of their origin (except few countries such as Japan) on international migration, and a low level of their recognition in all types on S. Korea's characters as their destination country.

Overcoming the Discourse of Foreignness: A Study on Class Positionality and Dual Identity of Korean Housemaids and Korean-Chinese Domestic Workers (외국인 담론 극복하기: 식모와 조선족 입주 가사노동자의 계급적 위치성과 이중적 정체성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper suggests how Korean housemaids, called Sikmo, and Korean-Chinese migrant domestic workers have similar class positions and therefore form a dual identity in their interactions with female employers. rough spoken stories of the experiences of 27 females from Seoul, including Korean-Chinese domestic workers, Korean housemaids, and their employers, this research effectively overcomes the dichotomous discourse of natives versus foreigners. Instead it suggests the new interpretation that it is not foreignness but class inferiority of the domestic workers that plays a key role in establishing relationships with employers. Korean housemaids and Korean-Chinese domestic workers, both groups of whom are migrant workers, have developed coping strategies to enhance their labor value by spatially relocating themselves from their home society to a new society. They possess a similar labor status in women's history, being of low income, low education, and rural births. Consequently, these women experience 'translocal anchoring,' meaning their identities are intertwined with that of their home societies, and employers perceive them based on the characteristics of these places. The Korean employers perceive that the domestic workers' morality and intellectuality are inferior based on their class differences. This stigmatizing process leads employers to regard domestic workers as ambivalent people, not only threatening outsiders but also objects of pity, needing love and protection of their employers. The employers educate them culturally, teaching them skills to survive in the urban environment. These skills include cooking and language, in addition to advice on long-term plans to blend into society.

A Convergent Study of Motivations, Success Factors and Issues of Foreign Entrepreneurs in South Korea (대한민국 내 외국인 기업가의 창업 동기부여 및 성공요인에 관한 융복합연구)

  • Due to globalization, more foreign-owned small businesses have been joining the South Korean economy. In order to better support the growth, this study's purpose is to identify foreign entrepreneur demographics and company information as well as entrepreneurial motivations and perceived success factors. To fulfill these goals, a survey of 98 immigrant entrepreneurs from 31 countries doing business within the local Korean market was conducted. The results show that most foreign-owned small businesses are service-oriented and primarily started for intrinsic reasons. It was also identified that the perceived business success determinants that the government can most directly affect are skills-based, rather than infrastructure or financially oriented. Furthermore, top issues include unreliable employees, language barrier and too much competition. The findings of this study are particularly relevant to both academics and policy makers alike because almost no prior foreign entrepreneur-focused research has been conducted in Korea.
