  • Understanding the interrelationship between regional population dynamics and cultivated land is crucial for promoting regional economic vitality and enhancing food security. While prior research often addressed population migration and changes in crop area separately, this study employs a Panel Vector Auto Regression Model to examine the dynamic interaction between regional population shifts, changes in crop area, and the influx of foreign workers in agriculture. The results reveal a reciprocal relationship between population influx and crop area, indicating a negative impact on each other. Moreover, the analysis demonstrates that an expansion in crop area, particularly in field cultivation, significantly correlates with an increase in foreign workers. These findings underscore the mutual influence of labor shortages and diminished land availability in agriculture, with the influx of foreign workers potentially offering a positive impact on addressing structural challenges in rural areas.

  • This study discusses how to protect foreign knowledge workers from disasters conceptually. While their prestigious social and economic status, the knowledge workers can become vulnerable to disasters due to their nomadic lifestyle and voluntary isolation from communities where they reside temporarily. This study introduced and discussed strengths and weaknesses of various types of disaster communication networks and found the Small World Network (SWN) and the use of structural holes would be an appropriate strategy for the protection of knowledge workers. The use of mediators for disaster communication would be a strategic intervention from public and private organizations since that addresses voluntary isolation issue without restructuring existing disaster communication network.

Method: I analyzed the National Statistical Office and related reports to investigate the status of foreign workers. Based on this, the government came up with measures to improve the system. Results: Based on the current comparative advantage index (RCA) analysis, the technology standard of foreign workers compared to Korean workers was evaluated, and the results were analyzed in order of moldwork, rebar, concrete work, stone work, and waterproof work. Conclusion: A foreign worker's work system was introduced to solve the problem of local Lunar New Year's Day field manpower. To ensure stable implementation of the system, there is a need to improve the operation of the employment permit system at construction sites and limit the size of the construction industry that introduces the employment permit system.

  • As the number of foreigners who stay for a long time increases, their residential concentrations have emerged and developed. This research aims at investigating how and why immigrants' residential concentration sustains and develops. In order to understand the roles of the residential concentration for the immigrants' everyday, we used the framework of grunddaseins funktionen including residence, labor, shopping, education, leisure, commuting, and community activity. Accompanied is a case study of Daelim-dong which is the largest Chinese concentrations. The result shows that combined with co-ethnic preference in residence, various amenities at the concentrations attract new immigrants and hold existing immigrants, allowing the concentrations sustain and develop. It has been pointed out that there are the difference factors that foreign immigrants concentrate residentially: 'co-ethnic residential preference' for immigrants from more developed countries and 'discrimination' for immigrants from less developed countries. However this study shows that the residential concentrations for less-developed-country-immigrants could maintain and develop with grunddaseins funktionen based on co-ethnicity.

  • As foreign immigrants are rapidly increasing, how they without previous knowledge and experience adjust themselves to local circumstances where they come to live becomes a major social issue. In order to analyze their adjustment process, this paper suggests a model which consists of relationships with local environment and people on the one hand, and of geographical knowledge and imagination on the other. The analysis of questionnaire survey based on the conceptual model suggests some findings. As there are considerable differences in the extent of their local adjustment and felt difficulties among immigration types, nationalities, and dwelling regions, foreign immigrants‘ policies should be devised proper for their type and characters.
