A Study on the Flag Sticked in a Military Cap (군모(軍帽)의 파기(播旗)에 관한 연구)

  • The custom of the flag sticked in a military cap involves the symbolic mark. That is, it makes the procession of an army clear and makes the convenience of activity possible. This custom was uniquely practiced at several countries. At Il dynasty($1258{\sim}1411$), Timurid dynasty($1369{\sim}1508$), Mughal dynasty($1526{\sim}1858$) was succeeded this custom by based on blood relationship for $13th{\sim}16th$ century on the diachronic viewpoint. And these countries have cultural correlation by regional paradigm, namely Islamic cultural area. Meanwhile, this custom of Ming dynasty and joseon dynasty appeared in $15th{\sim}17th$ century as official system. Expecially, one of joseon dynasty maintained for a short time than other countries because of jangpyo[章標] system which was more efficient than the sticked flag. On the synchronic viewpoint, this custom was the common and necessary status quo for the efficient expansion of territory and military management.

  • The magnitude of natural disaster is much bigger than the past. Only short time return period can be estimated due to limited number of measured data. Therefore, back-data extension studies are undergoing in various area through historical records. In this study, data gathering and analysis of historical flood records such as Joseon wangjo sillok(Annals of Joseon Dynasty) and Jeungbo munheon bigo (enlarged encyclopedic literature) was achieved for the usage of extreme flood study in various ways. Analysis of 479 flood events from Joseon wangjo sillok and 143 flood events from Jeungbo munheon bigo during Joseon Dynasty was conducted in statistical way.

  • This article examined the different types of Pyeonyuk as recorded in 15 royal palace studies from the Joseon dynasty (1392-1909). The ingredients used in Pyeonyuk during the Joseon dynasty were categorized as follows: 20% for Pyeonyuk(片肉), 18.6% for Jeyuksukpyeon(猪肉熟片), 17.1% for Uyuksukpyeon(牛肉熟片), 15.7% for Yangyuksukpyeon(羊肉熟片), 8.6% for Gyeyuksukpyeon(鷄肉熟片), 7.2% for Yangsukpyeon(月羊熟片), 5.7% each for Uselurangsukpyeon(牛舌牛囊熟片) and Utaeulpyeonyuk(牛胎栗片肉), 1.4% for saengsenssukpyeon (生鮮熟片). Further studies will be conducted on recipes and ingredients recorded in Euigwe in order to develop a standardized recipe for Pyeonyuk.

The Influence of Details on the Sense of Place in Islamic Gardens - Focusing on 'the Courtyard of the Lions' - (이슬람정원에서 디테일이 장소성에 미친 영향 -'사자의 중정'을 대상으로 -)

  • Humans desire the achievement a of sense of unity between themselves and place to create an identity of place as a realization of his or her sense of belonging. Humans develop ideas from their culture and environment to be expressed physically within the landscape through symbols. Symbols are formed within a place through the structure of the space and, more visually, through the details. The purpose of this paper is to examine the structure of space and the details of 'the Courtyard of the lions' in the Alhambra and to study how the details influence the formation of the identity of place. This paper also compares the structure and details in terms of the meaning of symbols, design languages, cultural, social and historical background and the experience of the place. The structure of the space in 'the Courtyard of the Lions' represents Paradise in the Islamic religion a common theme in the composition of traditional Islamic gardens. The design languages expressed within the structure are order, balance, accent and enclosure; the inherit meanings of the structure are religion, the natural environment and way of life. The details tell of the ideology of Paradise, royalty, nature, and praise of God, while their design languages include physical and visual continuity, accent, variation, the feeling of movement, rhythm, and depth perception. The details also express the historical background of the Dynasty of Nasrid and the style of Mudejar. The name 'the Courtyard of the Lions' was taken from the detail of the lim figures, details within the landscape which are important in building an identity of place. This study demonstrates that the details at 'the Courtyard of the lions' achieved a sense of unity between man and place. In conclusion, details have immense influence in building of the identity of place.

  • This article is to examine the characteristics of the first foundation of the Islamic Maghreb dynasty through the city of Tlemcen and its characteristics of the dynasty. This shows that primitive Islam in the French-speaking Maghreb region is based on a singular Islamic doctrine. Similarly, looking at the Islamic dynasty of Tlemcen, which was the center of Andalusian culture in the Middle Ages, we examined the status of Tlemcen as an Andalusian cultural center. Tlemcen, which was chosen as the capital of Islamic culture in 2011 by inheriting the Andalusian tradition, is as important in its identity as in its historicity. Because this Maghreb city has helped to Islamize the Iberian Peninsula. Tlemcen also has active exchanges with Mediterranean cities and has also imported and disseminated various cultures. Although the cult of trade has changed depending on power, this city has played the most important role of the Mediterranean Sea by continually expanding its functions and spreading various cultures in sub-Saharan Africa. At the time, it was the Ziyanide dynasty that was in the center and it has important historical values ​​in the sense that it is now the homeland of Algeria. By examining the region of Tlemcen, which is of religious and cultural importance, it was possible to examine the expansion of Andalusian culture in Algeria and the attributes of primitive Islam in the Maghreb.

Biological Identity of Hwangchung and History on the Control of Hwangchung Outbreaks in Joseon Dynasty Analyzed through the Database Program on the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the Enrollment of Haegoeje (조선왕조실록과 해괴제등록 분석을 통한 황충(蝗蟲)의 실체와 방제 역사)

  • We tried to establish the history of outbreaks and control methods of 'hwangchung' in Joseon Dynasty, uncovering the biological reality of the 'hwangchung' (called hwang or bihwang) analyzed through the Database program on 'the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty' and 'the Emollment of Haegoeje', two of the finest examples of classical historical records. The total number of articles on the outbreak of the hwangchung is 261 in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and 65 in the Emollment of Haegoeje. There were four peaks by hwangchung throughout the Joseon Era. Among them, the periods of King Taejo to King Sejong had the highest incidence. By comparing the number of records of the hwangchung from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty with that in the Emollment of Haegoeje during the same period, results show the former was less than the latter, 35 vs 65. However, both records were relatively inconsistent with each other. Insect pests in forests as well as in agriculture were included in the biological identities of the hwangchung in the Joseon Dynasty periods, which is in accordance with those of Saigo's. The taxonomic identity could be confirmed in only 25 cases (9.5%) among the articles on hwangchung. It largely coincided with Paik's opinion: II in armyworm, nine in moth larva, one in rice stem borer, two in migratory locust, one in planthopper and one in rice-plant weevil. Therefore, it is not reasonable to regard hwangchung as a migratory locust or grasshopper only. The number of reports on the occurrence of hwangchung in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty was 173 (66% of the total) and 47% of them were just simple reports, which means the report itself on the appearance of hwangchung was very significant. The reports on controlling insect pests were of low frequency, in 20% (34 cases) of the total reports, capturing insect pests or holding traditional ceremony called 'Poje'. Among them, only one case related to the treatment of seeds to prevent the damage by hwangchung was published in the King Sejong period. There were 37 discussions about changes and management of government policies due to disasters by hwangchung. They were mostly about relief or tax cut to the people who suffered damage and about cancellation of recruiting people to military training, constructing castles, and so on. It seems that not only the people but also the king was influenced by the hwangchung. In the case of King Seongjong, he referred to the stress of the prevention measure of locusts in 10 articles. The damage also had an effect on abdication in the reign of King Jeongjong.
