A 150 m$\^$3//hr, 30 kg/cm$\^$2/, air-cooled 3-stage reciprocating air compressor is designed to be used in starting large diesel engines of ships. A basic design procedure is presented to meet the targeted pressure and flow rate, and especially a volumetric efficiency of 80%. Temperature and stress analysis of the 1st stage cylinder are performed using axisymmetric FEM modelings. The dynamics of valve system is analyzed and stress at the 1st stage valve seat caused by valve impact is evaluated. To reduce friction loss and wear at the compressor engine system tribological design issues are reviewed and good design practices are suggested. Finally, forced-air pin-type interstage coolers are designed to dissipate generated compression heat at each stage.
For the purpose of high outlet pressure, compactness and low vibration and noise, 2 stage reciprocating air compressors can have various cylinder arrangement: opposed, in-line, and V type. This paper presents an effective method to calculate the inertia forces and to design counter weight. This method is based on the complex representation for the orbital behavior of the compressor shaft. This method helps to find the optimal balancing rate easily to reduce the inertial force or moment. This paper shows that the residual inertia forces of the single throw shafts and the residual inertia moments of the double throw shafts remain to be imbalanced.

Performance results are compared to the design targets, other foreign specifications, and some quality standards.

In a reciprocating compressor, the piston and connecting rod are important parts. Excess mechanical stress on these parts may cause damage, and broken parts are expensive and difficult to replace. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical stress affecting durability and longevity. The main purpose of this study was to identify locations of maximum stress on pistons and connecting rods. Based on dynamic calculation of the working process of a specific air compressor, an analysis of piston and connecting rod performance has been completed. A three-dimensional model for the air compressor's pistons and connecting rods was built separately, and FEM analysis of these components was carried out using a numerical method. The pistons were loaded by pressure which was changed according to crankshaft angle without thermal boundary conditions. The simulation results were used to predict and estimate stress concentration as well as the value of this stress on pistons and connecting rods. The maximum equivalent stress calculated are over 190 MPa on pistons and 123 MPa on connecting rods at crank angle $135^{\circ}$ and $225^{\circ}$ but these are under tensile yield strength. Besides, the calculated safety factors of connecting rods and pistons is higher than 1. Moreover, the results obtained can be used to provide manufacturers with references to optimize the design of pistons and connecting rods for reciprocating compressors.

This study is mainly concerned with vibration control of L-type reciprocating air compressor by a dynamic vibration absorber. The dynamic vibration absorber of reciprocating air compressor was designed for constant revolution running condition. For the review, Vibration test was conducted for the performance appraisal of installed dynamic vibration absorber in the reciprocating air compressor. As a result of the test, the performance of dynamic vibration absorber was satisfactory.
Modem reciprocating air compressors have tendency to a multi-stage W-type or V-type cylinder arrangement for the purpose of high outlet pressure, compactness and low vibration and noise. A valid counter weight calculation method using the complex expression is proposed for reducing the inertia forces of the compressor. Counter weight removes only 1st forward whirl component. Counter weight formulations are applied to the six various compressor structures which are (a) 1 cylinder single-throw crank shaft, (b) 2 cylinder single-throw crank shaft (c) 2 cylinder double-throw clank shaft, (d) 3 cylinder single-throw crank shaft, (e) 4 cylinder single-throw crank shaft and (f) 4 cylinder double-throw crank shaft. The improvement of performance is verified through available vibration test.

Recently, modern reciprocating air compressors tend to be smaller and lighter. But, as the development of performance, they have many problems for noise and vibration. For this reason, many researches are processing for the reduction of noise and vibration by arranging cylinders with V/W type. Especially, noise and vibration problems of reciprocating air compressor cause a rotating unbalance of crankshaft, so it needs a change of crankshaft parameters appropriately. Hence in this study, we changed crankshaft parameters to solve the rotating unbalance and compared results in order to verify the noise and vibration reduction between new and original air compressor. According to modify a crankshaft parameter, the improvements of noise and vibration were showed results of spectrum measured at selected points of the air compressor crankshaft housing and sound intensity contours measured at a belt left side, table that figure out characteristics of noise. Furthermore, we analyzed objective sound quality metrics with recording data of systems. The results showed that, the new design has improved the level of the first harmonic of vibration displacement, noise and objective sound quality metrics.

Recently, as the marine compressor power is increased, vibration problems on the marine vessel with V/W type reciprocating compressor have been occurred. A research on the balancing of marine V/W type reciprocating compressor has hardly been reported though a number of researches on the balancing of rotating machinery have been conducted. As a V/W type compressor has high capacity with long stroke, compact size and high center of gravity, It is easy to have a vibration problem by a little bit unbalanced force and moment. In this study, calculation methods for balance weight of the V/W type reciprocating compressors, which have different piston weight and asymmetry structure, are formulated. And their reliability were verified by comparing calculated balance weight with the experimental results of the real marine V/W type reciprocating compressors.
Numerical simulation has been made on the performance of an oil free air compressor for automotive electronic air suspension system. Calculation results on the flow rate at various air supply pressures were reasonably well compared to the experimental data. With the aid of the computer simulation program, parametric study on the compressor design parameters has also been carried out for the compressor performance improvement: Increase in the discharge port diameter or discharge valve stiffness was found to be effective to increase the flow rate per unit compressor input for the present compressor model.

There are screw, reciprocating and turbo compressor by structure in an air compressor, essential equipment on he industrial spot. Resently it is wide that the range of turbo compressor's use in gradual, turbo compressor needs high speed rotation of impeller in structure, high rated gearbox and conventional induction motor. This mechanical system increased the moment of inertia and mechanical friction loss. Resently the study of turbo compressor applied super high speed motor and drive, removing gearbox made its size small and mechanical friction loss minimum. In this study we tried to develope variable super high speed motor drive systems for 150Hp, 70,000rpm drect drive Turbo compressor. The result of study is applied to a 150Hp direct turbo compressor and makes it goods.
