The mixed acoustic-convective mode combustion instability and the possibility of combustion control using a loudspeaker to these instabilities were studied. By changing inlet velocity, combustor length and equivalence ratio, the dynamic pressure signals and the flame structures were simultaneously taken. The results showed that as the combustor length increased and the inlet velocity decreased, the instability frequency decreased and the maximum power spectral densities of the dynamic pressures generally decreased. The instability frequency could be affected by an equivalence ratio over the operating conditions. From the data of close-loop control, as the loudspeaker may work out-of-phase with the natural instability, the optimum time-delay controller was confirmed to be able to reduce the vortex shedding from the mixed acoustic-convective mode combustion instability.

In this paper, the combustion instabilities which may occur in the hybrid rocket were studied. The rocket combustor where the vortexes can be generated was designed, and the experiments were performed. The investigations about characteristics on the presence of the diaphragm, the length of the fuel, the diameter of the fuel port, the diameter of the diaphragm, the diameter of the nozzle throat, and the variation of the Ox massflow rate were conducted. The main resonant frequency of the combustion pressure is regarded by the Vortex shedding mode, and it is considered that the other resonant frequency of the pressure fluctuation is hybrid low frequency, or helmholtz mode.

Long-span bridges are flexible structures with low natural frequencies and damping ratios, making them susceptible to vibrational serviceability problems. However, the current design guideline of South Korea assumes a uniform threshold of wind speed or vibrational amplitude to assess the occurrence of harmful vibrations, potentially overlooking the complex vibrational patterns observed in long-span bridges. In this study, we propose a pointwise vortex-induced vibration (VIV) detection method using a deep-learning-based signalsegmentation model. Departing from conventional supervised methods of data acquisition and manual labeling, we synthesize training data by generating sinusoidal waves with an envelope to accurately represent VIV. A Fourier synchrosqueezed transform is leveraged to extract time-frequency features, which serve as input data for training a bidirectional long short-term memory model. The effectiveness of the model trained on synthetic VIV data is demonstrated through a comparison with its counterpart trained on manually labeled real datasets from an actual cable-supported bridge.

In the boundary layer, vortical system has been analyzed by the statistical methods to identify the vortex interaction. However, there are the limitations in explaining vortices by the mean velocity or the standard deviation. This paper proposed a method to establish a frequency analysis by Fourier transform in order to simultaneously investigate various scale vortices. For this purpose, the flow visualization conducted to reveal a standing vortex, a hairpin vortex and a wake region around a hemisphere attached on a flat plate in a water channel. In addition, the velocity where the hairpin vortex was being generated in the wake region was measured by a hot-film anemometer. To observe changes in the vortex interaction, suction was applied through a hole in front of the hemisphere. For the evaluation of the proposed frequency analysis, the existing statistical results were compared to the frequency analysis that corresponds to the qualitative results of the flow visualization.

The frequency characteristics in an axial flow fan operating at a design and three off-design operating conditions have been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation of a tip leakage vortex and a wake flow. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor. a fixed and a moving ones, were introduced to obtain a cross-correlation coefficient between two sensors as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region of higher flow rates than those in the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition. Detailed wake flow just downstream of the rotor blade was also measured by the rotating hot-wire sensor. The peak frequency of a high velocity fluctuation due to Karman vortex shedding in the wake region is mainly observed at the higher flow rate condition than that in the design point.

In this paper, aerodynamic noise simulation was conducted using DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) and FW-H (Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings) acoustic analogy for the tandem cylinders which have configuration similar to a landing gear of airplanes. Numerical simulation for the tandem cylinders whose centers are 3.7D apart was carried out and results were compared with the measured data such as flow characteristics, pressure coefficients on the cylinder surfaces and far-field noise characteristics. It was confirmed that periodically shedded vortices released at the upstream cylinder and impinged on the downstream cylinder surface are major sources of aerodynamic noise. After verifying the computational method of using DES and FW-H acoustic analogy for predicting aerodynamic noise of tandem cylinders, additional simulation was conducted to examine the effect of attaching a splitter plate at the rear of the upstream cylinder. It was confirmed that the noise level in specific frequency band decreased significantly because the splitter plate changed the vortex shedding features and reduced dipole noise source.

Vortical systems are considered a main feature to sustain turbulence in a boundary layer through interaction. Such turbulent structures result in frictional drag and erosion or vibration in engineering applications. Research for controlling turbulent flow has been actively carried out, but in order to show the effect of vortices in a turbulent boundary layer, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism by which turbulent energy is transferred. For this purpose, it is convenient to demonstrate and capture phenomena in a laminar boundary layer. Therefore, in this study, the interactions of disturbed flow around a hemisphere on a flat plate in laminar flow were analyzed. In other words, a street of hairpin vortices was generated following a wake region formed after flow separation occurred over a hemisphere. Necklace vortices surrounding the hemisphere also appeared due to a strong adverse pressure gradient that brought high momentum fluid into the wake region thereby leading to an increase in the frequency of hairpin vortices. To mitigate the effect of these necklace vortices, local suction control was applied through a hole in front of the hemisphere. Flow visualization was recorded to qualitatively determine flow modifications, and hot-film measurements quantitatively supported conclusions on how much the power of the hairpin vortices was reduced by local wall suction.

The pressure oscillation induced by inhibitor in a solid rocket motor has been investigated by 3D large eddy simulation(LES) and proper orthogonal decomposition(POD). The vortex generation and breakdown at inhibitor are periodically observed between the inhibitor and the nozzle by flow-acoustic coupling mechanism. The excitation of pressure oscillation occurs as the flow impinges on the submerged nozzle head which recirculate in the cavity in rear dome of the motor chamber. The vortex generation frequency is closely related with the shedding frequencies of the detached vorticities at the inhibiter, which fairly compared with the experimental data.

The unsteady vortex lattice method is used to model twisting and flapping motions of a rectangular flat plate wing. The results for plunging and pitching motions were compared with the limited experimental results available and other numerical methods. They show that the method is capable of simulating many of the features of complex flapping flight. The lift, thrust and propulsive efficiency of a rectangular flat plate wing have been calculated for various twisting angles and reduced frequency with an amplitude of flapping angle($20^{\circ}$). And the effects of the twisting on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.
