  • The effect of temperature on the sources of organic acids and sludge when phosphorus was biologically released was evaluated in this study. The sludge used in this study was obtained from sequencing batch reactor processing the swine wastewater. Temperature is one of the most important parameters influencing the phosphorus release. As a result, the rate of phosphorus released was increased as the temperatures were increased from 5 to $30^{\circ}C$ regardless of the sources of organic acids used. Under anaerobic conditions, as acetate, propionate, glucose, and domestic wastewater were used as the sources of organic acids, the corresponding activation energy($E_a$) values were 49.83, 55.82, 54.61, and 45.44 KJ/mol, respectively. Temperature coefficient($\theta$) values were 1.0676, 1.0826, 1.0748, and 1.0698, respectively. Therefore, the rate of phosphorus released was increased as temperature was increased, whereas, the effect, of the sources of organic acids and temperature on the activation energy and temperature coefficient values were minimal. When the sludge previously adapted to acetate as external organic source was used, the activation energy and temperature coefficient values were 44.94 KJ/mol and 1.0570 respectively. The effect of temperature was minimal. These values obtained from the sludge previously adapted to acetate were smaller than those from the sludge not previously adapted to the same organic acid. This suggest that the sludge previously adapted to acetate was less dependent on temperature than that not adapted to the acetate.

  • To investigate on the biochemical characteristics of myofibrillar proteins between cold(pollack, salmon) and warm current fish (yellow corbina, shark), myofibrils and actomyosin were prepared, and their biological activities, effect of temperature on the myofibrillar ATPase activities and SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns of myofibrils were compared. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic analysis showed that electrophoretic patterns of myofibril vary from fish to fish. Difference in KCl concentration dependency of myofibrillar ATPase activities and ATPase activity- pH curve were found among fish species. Myofibrillar proteins from cold current fish showed higher specific activity at low temperature $(5^{\circ}C-10^{\circ}C)$ than those from warm current fish.

  • The effect of pathogenicity on trehalose accumulation was studied using six species of entomopathogenic nematodes adapted to either cold or warm temperature conditions. Also, trehalose accumulation was studied by treating nematodes with glycerol or oil at trehalose concentration and mortality of cold temperature $condition(5^{\circ}C)$, S. longicaudum Gl was increased 50% than control. And at trehalose concent and mortality of warm temperature $condition(30^{\circ}C)$, S. glaseri Agr B3 was increased 45%. Intracellular trehalose accumulation was increased with treatment with 20% glycerol or oil. As the final results, the pathogenic duration of nematodes was increased as intracellular trehalose accumulation was increased

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physiological responses of obese children after a short-term wear training and education. A ten-week program was conducted on thirteen obese elementary school children of six boys and seven girls in the 4th to the 6th grade. During the program, the children were instructed to measure daily ambient temperature and weight of their clothing. Physiological responses of the sedentary children in 100$\%$ cotton short sleeved t-shirt (0.13clo) and T/C short pants(0.09clo) were observed in the climatic chamber of 23.0$\pm$0.5$^{circ}C$ and 50$\pm$5$\%$RH before and after program. During the experiment, internal ear temperature ($T_{ear}$), seven site skin temperatures, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and subjective responses of thermal comfort and thermal sensation were measured every 5minutes. Mean skin temperature($T_{sk}$) and mean arterial pressure(MAP) were calculated. Obtained data are statistically analyzed and main results are as follows. There was highly significant correlation between the ambient temperature and the total clothing weight. $T_{ear}$ and MAP were reduced in the post-program compared to the pre-program. The obese girls felt slightly warmer than the obese boys and the girls were likely to prefer lower ambient temperature in the post-program than the pre-program. It was concluded that the 10 week wear training is apt to be more applicable to the obese girls than the obese boys. However, a more comprehensive study including. diverse measurements of deep body temperature with a long-term training would be needed to clarify the improvement of temperature adaptability in the obese children.

  • The paper demonstrates that an adaptive fuzzy controller can be used effectively for the control of the temperature and density of the Tokarnak fusion recator which is nonlinear and has dynamic uncertainties. The dynamic uncertainties are non-parametric but state dependent. Thus the conventional adaptive nonlinear control methods have difficulties to cope with the problem. The proposed adaptive fuzzy controller can be used as a solution and performs well in a predetermined local space. Simulation result verifies the effectiveness of the scheme.

  • Humans have been searching for more comfortable places for centuries. The comfort concept which is related with vitality in Pungsu is closest to science. The comfort concept was introduced as being based upon measurable human physiological and psychological reactions. Two classification nomograms, the comfort index and the wind effect index were identified. The Pungsu concept can be applied in America, and one of them is North Cemetery located in the town of Hampton in northeastern Connecticut not far from Storrs campus, the University of Connecticut. The human reaction to comfort not only physiologically but also individually is various in various climate region. It is important to search for more comfortable places or to make up for less comfortable places with Pungsu as the adaptive strategy for the comfort.
