Prediction of the Fire Curtain Effect through a Numerical Simulation of a Reduced Scale Model for Fires in Theaters (공연장 화재 축소모형의 전산시뮬레이션을 통한 방화막 영향 예측)

  • Although a fire curtain plays an important role in preventing smoke from spreading to the auditorium in a theater fire, there has been insufficient research on fire curtains. In this study, to check the accuracy of numerical simulation, for previous experiments using a reduced scale model, a numerical simulation was carried out, and the results were compared with previous experimental data. The fire curtain effect was then predicted numerically. A Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was used, and the natural exhaust vent sizes were set to ~10%, ~5%, and ~1% of the stage floor area. The smoke movement was visualized, and the mass flow rates and temperatures were measured and analyzed. In addition, the law of similarity was used to examine the influence of a fire curtain in a real scale theater fire. Without the fire curtain, the present numerical simulation results were in agreement with the previous experimental data within reasonable accuracy. Meanwhile, the fire curtain affects the mass flow rates through the natural exhaust vent and proscenium opening, as well as the start time of soot outflow to the auditorium. Overall, the present results can be used to develop a fire curtain system.

Estimating the freezing and supercooling points of Korean agricultural products from experimental and quality characteristics (국내산 농산물의 과냉각 및 동결점 분석)

  • This study was performed to determine the optimal freezing point for the reliable cold storage of Korean agricultural products, and to provide basic data for determining the storage temperature based on the quality characteristics. Additional supercooling temperature analysis was conducted to explore the possibility of supercooling storage. To determine the effects of quality characteristics on the freezing point, the hardness, acidity, moisture and sugar content were analyzed. The crops were frozen using customized cooling unit and their freezing and supercooling points were determined based on their heat release points. The freezing temperatures of garlic, leek, cucumber, hot pepper, grape, oriental melon, netted melon, peach, cherry tomato, plum, daikon, sweet persimmon, apple, sweet potato, mandarin, pear, and strawberry were -1.6, -0.5, -0.5, -0.7, -1.6, -1.6, -1.3, -0.8, -0.3, -1.1, -0.3, -1.7, -1.5, -1.5, -0.8, -1.5, and -0.9C, respectively; otherwise, supercooling points were -7.8, -3.7, -3.3, -4.9, -5.7, -4.6, -2.8, -3.3, -5.9, -4.2, -0.8, -4.7, -3.2, -3.7, -4.7, -4.2, and -3.4C, respectively. These results suggest that the ideal freezing temperature of crops could be estimated through freezing point depression because of their sugar content, and this technique should be used to maintain an optimum storage temperature. However, cold storage is complicated and further study is required because of the effects of long-term cold storage on the crops.

Prevention and Control of composting Odors Using Microbial Inocula, KMT-199 (미생물 종균제(KMT-199)를 이용한 퇴비제조 공정의 악취제거)

  • Generation of gaseous ammonia has been a major problem in composting facilities. Microbial inocula. KMT-199(brand name: CompoBacTM). was developed in INBI0NET CORPORATION and tested in the field for its ammonia reducing capability. When KMT-199 was applied. a ten-fold increase of mesophilic and thermophilic microorganisms was observed during the early stage of composting process. Also. the temperature and pH of early stage compost increased at a higher rate when compared to control. KMT-199 treated compost reached highest temperature of 75Cat day 9, indicating treatment could shift the maximum composting temperature to 3 days earlier The highest temperature also reached 3C higher than the control. The pH of compost gradually increased during composting. KMT-199 treated compost reached a plateau of pH 9.32 at day 15 after treatment, and then slowly decreased thereafter. On the other hand. pH of the control steadily increased until day 38 of composting. 29% reduction of gaseous ammonia generation during composting was observed compared to that of the control. KMT-199 amended compost resulted in a higher germination rate of radish seeds than the control. These results indicate that application of microbial inocula facilitates degradation of organic materials, including ammonia during the composting process.

Effects of Temperature, Seed Water Content and Osmoconditioning on Germination and Seedling Elongation of Soybeans (온도.종자수분함량 및 삼투처리가 콩의 발아 및 묘신장에 미치는 영향)

  • Germination and seedling elongation of soybeans [cult. ‘Williams’] were measured at two temperatures (15 and 30C), three seed water contents (30, 50, and 70%), and with and without polyethylene glycol-8000 (PEG) treatments. A split-plot design was used with four replications. Observations were made from two hours to eight days for each treatment combination. Seeds were soaked with 30% PEG solution with 0.2% thiram at 15 C for six days, rinsed with deionized water and dried at 25.5C for three days. Ten treated or untreated seeds were placed on Whatman No. I (9 cm) filter paper in plastic petridishes to which sufficient deionized water was added to adjust seed moisture content to the desired level. The dishes were then sealed with parafilm and placed in a continuous programmed temperature chamber under dark condition. Seedling growth did not occur at either temperature when moisture content was 50 percent or less. Osmo-conditioning with PEG showed positive effects on seedling moisture uptake and seedling growth at 15C but little effect at 30C. Seedling moisture content increased rapidly early in the germination period and reached 60% at 15 C for 56 hours and at 30C for 28 hours. Seedling growth started when seed moisture reached a critical point of 60% at 15C, however, growth started after 20 hours of germination at 30C. Seedlings of soybeans elongated more than four times faster at 30C than at 15C. Water uptake during germination was characterized by two phases in this experiment.

Effect of Heat Treatment Conditions on Color Change and Termite Resistance of Heat-Treated Wood (열처리 조건이 목재의 색상 변화 및 흰개미 저항성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the color change of heat-treated wood made of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.), and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl). The wood samples were heat-treated at 9 different treatment combinations of temperature (170, 180, 200, 220, and 230C), and time (90, 120, 180, 240, 270 min.) set up by a response surface method. Wood color was measured using a colorimeter, and the samples were installed for evaluating the resistance of termite in the field test sites set up in Jinju. The lightness decreased with the increase of treatment temperature and treatment time. The color differences were evaluated by the method of National Bureau of Standards (NBS), and response surface models to predict the color change were fitted as a function of treatment temperature and treatment time. The R2 values of the fitted models of heat-treated Korean pine and lodgepole pines were 0.92, and 0.88, respectively, showing the potential way for the prediction of color changes. Severe damage was found from the samples in the field test site, which means that the manufactured heat-treated wood did not show the termite resistance enough for the outdoor use.

Mössbauer Study of Al0.2CoFe1.8O4 Ferrite Powders (Mössbauer 분광법에 의한 Al0.2CoFe1.8O4분말의 자기적 특성 연구)

  • The Al0.2CoF e1.8 O4ferrite powders have been prepared by the sol-gel method. The crystallographic and magnetic properties of the sample depending on annealing temperature have been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, FE SEM, Mossbauer spetroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. The x-ray diffractions of all samples annealing temperature above 873 K clearly indicate the presence of spinel structure, the lattice constant decrease from 8.425 \AA at 873 K to 8.321 \AA at 1073 K, whereas the particle size rapidly increase from about 39 nm at 673 K to about 108 nm at 1073 K. The Mossbauer spectra annealed above 873 K could be fitted as the superposition of two sextets due to F e3+ at A-site and B-site. The isomer shift (IS) and quadruple splitting (QS) values nearly constant with annealing temperature, whereas magnetic hyperfine field ( Hhf) of A-site slowly in crease and that of B-site fastly increases with increasing annealing temperature. The magnetic behaviour of powders shows that the saturation magnetization increase from 0.7 emu/g at 473 K to 72.1 emu/g at 1073 K while the coercivity decrease from 0.951 kOe at 673 K to 0.374 kOe at 1073 K with increasing annealing temperature.

Evaluation of Mazars damage model of KURT granite under simulated coupled environment of geological disposal (처분 복합환경을 고려한 KURT 화강암의 Mazars 손상모델 평가)

  • In this study, the damage parameters of Mazars model for KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) granite are measured form uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tests under the simulated coupled condition of a deep geological disposal. The tests are conducted in three different temperatures (15℃, 45℃, and 75℃) and dry/saturated conditions. Major model parameters such as maximum effective tensile strain (𝜖d0), At, Bt, Ac, and Bc differ from the typical reference values of concrete specimens. This is likely due to the difference in elastic modulus between rock and concrete. It is found that the saturation of specimens causes an increase in value of Bt and Bc while, the rise in temperature increases 𝜖d0 and Bt and decreases Bc. The damage model obtained from this study will be used as the primary input parameters in the development of coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Damage numerical model in KAERI.

Regional Distribution of Peach Freezing Damage and Chilling Days in 2010 in Gangwon Province (강원지역의 2010년 복숭아 동해)

  • Extremely low values of the daily minimum temperature occurred in January 2010, ranging from -18 to 29C at various locations growing peach trees in the Gangwon province. Due to the extreme cold temperature during the winter dormancy period of peach trees, the growth of the peach trees was damaged and the damaged areas increased as the extent of 17 to 144 ha. In order to provide information on mitigation measure of the cold temperature on the peach trees in the Gangwon province, we assessed the distribution of the damaged areas of growing the peach trees in 2010 and compared it with freezing risk estimated from the dormancy depth of the peach trees and the daily minimum temperature. The dormancy depth of 'Changhowon Hwando (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch)' ranged from -62 to -90 and the freezing risk was greater than 51%. The relationship between the freezing risk and the actual damaged area ratio showed reasonable agreement (r2 of 0.5 with p < 0.01). The results imply that the estimates of the freezing risk based on the dormancy depth can be used as a mitigation measure to identify susceptible peach growing areas to freezing damage injury.

  • experimental and computational studies ore carried out to investigate the natural convection of the single phase flow in a tank with a heated horizontal plate facing downward. This is a simplified model for investigations of the influence of a core melt at the bottom of a reactor vessel on the thermal hydraulic behavior in a oater filled cavity surrounding the vessel. In this case the vessel is simulated by a hexahedron insulated box with a heated plate Horizontally mounted at the bottom of the box. The box with the heated plate is installed in a water filled hexahedron tank. Coolers are immersed in the U-type water volume between the box and the tank. Although the multicomponent flows exist more probably below the heated plate in reality, present study concentrates on the single phase flow in a first step prior to investigating the complicated multicomponent thermal hydraulic phenomena. In the present study, in order to get a better understanding for the natural convection characteristics below the heated plate, the velocity and temperature are measured by LDA(Laser Doppler Anemometry) and thermocouples, respectively. And How fields are visualized by taking pictures of the How region with suspended particles. The results show the occurrence of a very effective circulation of the fluid in the whole How area as the heater and coolers are put into operation. In the remote region below the heated plate the new is nearly stagnant, and a remarkable temperature stratification can be observed with very thin thermal boundary. Analytical predictions using the FLUTAN code show a reasonable matching of the measured velocity fields.

Development of Frequency Weighing Sensor and Single Crystal Growth (새로운 무게센서 재발과 단결정성장(1))

  • A new weighing sensor for the automatic diameter control system of the crystal growth is developed in this study. This weighing sensor measures the frequency of the vibrating element which is lineally changing with respect to weight. The signal and the power of this system are transmitted without any physical contact, so that this sensor offers high accuracy and resolution. This system consists of a string, a sinusoidal wave generator, an automatic amplification adjusting circuit, signal transformers and a PCB. 4 kinds of programs are developed for checking DAC, weight calibration and controlling growth process. The measurements of the standard deviation and the resolution show ±0.10g(measured at every second) and 5×105, respectively, This weighing sensor is effective under high pres-sure of 200 atm, high temperature and vacuum condition. The weighing system can control the temperature in the accuracy of ±0.025C with the 'signal divider'. The optical quality single crystals of (YGd)3Sc2Ga3O12,ErY3Sc2Al3O12,andBi12GeO20 have been grown by Czo-chralski method using this auto-diameter control system.
