  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Porphyra tenera (PT) extract on serum lipids content in ovariectomized rats. From day 3 until 42 after the ovariectomy, Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: sham-operated rats (Sham), ovariectomized control rats (OVX-control), ovarjectomized rats supplemented with PT at 50 mg/kg bw/day (OVX-PT50), 200 mg/kg bw/day (OVX-PT200). The PT ethanol extract were orally administrated at 1 m1 per day. Body weight gain, food intake and food efficiency ratio were not significantly different between groups. Although total-cholesterol was increased in OVX-control, supplementation with the PT decreased the level of cholesterol in serum. Especially, it was significantly decreased in OVX-PI50 (p<0.05). Triglyceride was significantly decreased to almost all of groups supplemented with PT (p<0.05). The levels of HDL-cholesterol was higher in PT extract group than OVX-control. These results suggest that supplementation with the PT extract positively influenced on lipid concentration in serum. Consequently, we expect that PT extract decrease risk of cardiovascular diseases by postmenopausal.

  • Essential oil is a volatile substance obtained by physically obtaining fragrant plant materials made by one single plant and plant species, and is widely used for cosmetics, fragrances, and aroma therapy due to its excellent preservation, sterilization, and antibacterial effects. When essential oil would undergo the extraction and concentration processes, the agricultural chemicals thereof would be extracted and concentrated only to be harmful to the human body. This study analyzes 320 residual agricultural chemicals concentrated in the essential oil, and to this end, LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS are used, while the freezing process is applied instead of the conventional refining process hexane, to improve the preprocessing method. As a result of analyzing the essential oil, such ingredients as chlorpyrifos, piperonyl butoxide and silafluofen have been detected in Basil oil and Clove leaf oil. Hence, it is perceived that the residual agricultural chemicals should continue to be monitored for the essential oil.

  • Antimutagenic effect of Eleutherococcus senticosus Maxim. on the mutagenicity induced by 2-AF and Trp-P-1 was studied using the Ames test with Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100. In S. typhimurium TA98, the methanol extract $(500\;{\mu}g/plate)$ of root, stem, and leaf of E. senticosus showed inhibitory effects of 72.8, 70.0, and 78.7% on the mutagenicity induced by 2-AF, and 69.2, 64.9, and 59.4% by Trp-P-1, respectively, whereas none was observed in S. typhimurium TA100. These results suggest that the methanol extract of E. senticosus inhibits a frame shift mutation. And then the methanol extract further fractionated by chloroform, butanol, and water. The chloroform fractions of root, stem, and leaf showed strong antimutagenic effects induced by 2-AF and Trp-P-1 in S. typhimurium TA98, whereas none was observed in the butanol and aqueous fractions. The chloroform fractions of root, stem, and leaf showed antimutagenic effects of $13{\sim]92%$ in a dose-dependent manner.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of essential oils and ethanolic extracts of approximately 650 plant species on acetylcholine esterase (AChE) enzyme activity using Ellman's colorimetric method in 96-well microplates. The results showed that the ethanolic extracts from twig of Sophora subprostrata, twig of Phellodendron amurense, seed of Corylopsis coreana, and essential oil (EO) from Citrus paradisi, Cupressus sempervirens, Ocimum basilicum, Pinus sylvestris and Rosmarinus officinalis inhibited more than 80% of AChE activity. Among these, EO from Pinus sylvestris, C. sempervirens and C paradisi exhibited higher values of AChE inhibitory activity, which were 75, 84 and 99% at a concentration of 50 ug/ml, respectively. Finally, EO from C paradisi (grapefruit, GEO) showed the highest inhibitory activity towards AChE, which showed 91% of inhibition at a concentration of 20 ug/ml. We also examined the anti-dementia effects of GEO in mouse by passive avoidance test and Morris water maze test. The model mouse (male, ICR) of dementia (negative control) was induced by administration of scopolamine (1 mg/kg body weight). The latency time of sample group administrated with GEO (100 mg/kg, p.o.) increased significantly as compared with negative control on passive avoidance test. There were significant recovery from the scopolamine-induced deficits on learning and memory in water maze test through daily administrations with GEO (100 mg/kg, p.o.). From these results, we conclude that GEO treatment might enhance the cognitive function, suggesting that the EO of C. paradis may be a potential candidate for improvement of perceptive ability and dementia.

  • This study investigated the physiological characteristics of various medicinal plant extracts including Crataegi Fructus (CF), Perilla frutescens Britton var. acuta Kudo (PF), Geranium thunbergii sieb. et Zucc. (GT) and Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg (PM) for use in extending the shelf-life and improving the functional properties of seasoned pork. CF and GT showed a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activities against 5 kinds of Gram (+) bacteria and 5 kinds of Gram (-) bacteria. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts decreased as the heat treatment temperature increased between 60 and $121^{\circ}C$, but their activities remained relatively high following heat treatment. The total phenolic compound contents of the CF, PF, GT, PM extracts were 66.2, 29.0, 96.6 and 13.3 mg/g, respectively. The order of their DPPH radical scavenging activity was GT > CF > PF > PF. The nitrite scavenging activities of the CF, PF and GT extracts at 0.1% concentration were 10.5, 1.6 and 3.8%, respectively. The GT extract (99.7%) showed the highest degree of lipid rancidity inhibition compared to CF (90.3%), PF (88.9%) and PM (41.2%). After heat treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of CF decreased but it increased in GT and PM. The nitrite scavenging activities of CF and GT decreased after heat treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$ but remained at relatively high levels. Also, degrees of lipid rancidity inhibition remained relatively high in PF (86.3%) and GT (99.8%) after heat treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that CF and GT extracts could be used as ingredients in seasoning sauce to improve the shelf-life and functional properties of seasoned pork.

  • OMiYakSung theory consists of various herbs that contain at least one or more of the five flavors. This theory has been used to prevent human diseases and enhance the immune system. The main objective of the present study was to investigate efficacy differences and changes in ingredients of blended and single herb extracts based on OMiYakSung theory. We selected three herbs Coptis japonica Makino, Cimicifuga heracleifolia Komarov, and white Poria cocos and assessed their physiological effect. As results, the blended extracts showed excellent cell migration effect at 400 ug/mL concentration, compared to the single extract. In addition, the blended extracts enhanced immune function by increasing the activity of dendritic cells and showed the highest antioxidant activity by DPPH assay and HPLC-ABTS assay. In this study, we developed a new materials that can be applicable to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals field by applying oriental medicine theory.
