  • Pressure risc is an important design factor and affects significantly on the characteristics of gas circuit breakers. For self-blast circuit breakers, the nozzle ablation plays important role in pressure-building up and should be properly considered for the accurate calculation. In this paper, the nozzle ablation is treated as a boundary condition and the pressure is calculated from mass fractions of PTFE and SF6. The amount of the ablated mass of a nozzle is assumed to be proportional to the are energy and the area of nozzle surface that directly touches arc. The calculation result is compared with measured data and shows good agreement with it.

  • An experimental apparatus was constructed to obtain vapor-liquid equilibrium data for $CO_2$/oil mixtures using mass analysis method with sample cylinder. Lubricants employed were POE(Polyol Ester) oil and PAG(Poly Alkylene Glycol) oil. The phase equilibria of $CO_2$/oil mixtures formed in high pressure equilibrium cell are observed through sight glasses at the opposite ends. Data were measured over the temperature range from -10 to $10^{\circ}C$ with $5^{\circ}C$ intervals under pressures up to 14 MPa. Mole fractions were calculated for $CO_2$/oil and $CO_2$/PAAG, respectively and were compared with each other.

Lubricants employed were POE (poly-ol ester) and PAG (poly alkylene glycol). The phase equilibria of $CO_2/oil$ mixtures prevailed in an equilibrium cell were observed through a couple of sight glasses at the opposite ends. Data were obtained over the temperatures $-10^{\circ}C,\;-5^{\circ}C,\;0^{\circ}C,\;5^{\circ}C,\;10^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C,\;40^{\circ}C,\;60^{\circ}C,\;and\;80^{\circ}C$ under pressures up to 14 MPa and then mole fractions were calculated, respectively In general, more solubility of $CO_2$ is observed in POE than in PAG. Miscibility gap is closed for $CO_2/POE$ mixture but not for $CO_2/PAG$.

  • In this study, non-catalytic transesterification from rapeseed oil using supercritical methanol was carried out by varying the operation parameters such as temperature ($320{\sim}365{^{\circ}C}$), time (0~20 min), pressure (10~35 MPa), molar ratio of oil to methanol (1 : 15~60) and agitation speed (0~500 rpm). In order to evaluate the effects of reaction parameters on the content of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), we carried out the study using a batch reactor. The content of FAMEs increased when the temperature increased. However, the content of FAMEs decreased with temperature above $335^{\circ}C$ and time above 5 min. The content of FAMEs increased with increasing the molar ratio of methanol to oil but the content of FAMEs was slightly affected by molar ratio of oil to methanol above 1 : 45 and pressure above 20 MPa. It was found that the agitation speed above 100 rpm slightly affected the content of FAMEs. The highest content of FAMEs in biodiesel (95%) was obtained under the reaction conditions: temperature of 335 ${^{\circ}C}$, time of 10 min, pressure of 20 MPa, molar ratio of 1 : 45 (oil to methanol) and agitation speed of 250 rpm.

  • In this study, non-catalytic transesterification using supercritical methanol was performed for preparation of biodiesel from palm oil. In order to investigate the effects of reaction parameters such as molar ratio of methanol to oil(30:1~60:1), pressure(8~25 MPa), temperature($320{\sim}350^{\circ}C$), agitation speed(0~1,000 rpm) and time(0~20 min) on the content of fatty acid methyl esters(FAMEs), we carried out the study using a batch reactor. With increasing molar ratio of methanol to oil, the content of FAMEs increased. However, the content of FAMEs was little affected by molar ratio above 45 and pressure above 20 MPa. The content of FAMEs increased when the temperature increased. However, the content of FAMEs decreased with temperature above at $350^{\circ}C$ and with time above 5 min. It was found that the agitation speed above 500 rpm scarcely affected the content of FAMEs. The highest content of FAMEs in biodiesel(95%) was obtained under the reaction conditions: temperature of $335^{\circ}C$, pressure of 20 MPa, molar ratio of 45:1(methanol to palm oil), agitation speed of 500 rpm and time of 10 min.

  • Flow-induced voids during resin impregnation and poor fiber wetting give serious effects on the mechanical properties of composites in resin transfer molding process. In order to better understand the characteristics of resin flow and to investigate the mechanism of void formation, flow visualization experiment for the resin impregnation was carried out on plain weaving glass fiber mats using silicon oils with various viscosity values. The permeability and the capillary pressure for the fiber mats of different porosities were obtained by measuring the penetration length of the resin with time and with various injection pressure. At low porosity and low operating pressure, the capillary pressure played a significant role in impregnation process. Video-assisted microscopy was used in taking the magnified photograph of the flow front of the resin to investigate the effect of the capillary pressure on the void formation. The results showed that the voids were formed easily when the capillary pressure was relatively high. No voids were detected above the critical capillary number of 2.75$\times$$10^{-3}, and below the critical number the void content increased exponentially with decrease of the capillary number. The content of void formed was independent of the viscosity of the resin. For a given capillary number, the void content reduced with the lower porosity of the fiber mat.

  • Little information is available for emission pathway even if HFC-134a that is known as one of the major greenhouse gases has been broadly used in Korea. This paper attempts to clarify the emission characteristics of HFC-134a used for refrigerant of cold drinking vending machines (CDVMs) at the use- and disposal-phase. We measured the residual amounts in the scrap CDVMs of 47 by applying commercial recover for refrigerant. The first-order kinetic model was introduced and the emission rate would be proportional to the remaining quantity of refrigerant. The emission factor at the use-phase was determined indirectly to be $6.9{\pm}0.7$ %/yr within a confidence interval of 95%, using information on residual amount and elapsed operation time at the disposal point. Correspondingly, the annual emission rate of HFC-134a per CDVM was determined to be 11.6 g. The average residual rate of HFC-134a in scrap CDVMs was assessed to be $62.5{\pm}2.2%$, leading to a potential emission amount of 144.8 g per scrap CDVM. The chemical compositions of refrigerants from scrap passenger vehicles are quite similar to those of new refrigerants, suggesting that the refrigerants from scrap passenger vehicles could be reused. During the recovering process of refrigerant, the recovered refrigerant was contaminated by compressor lubricant that accounted for about 30% in weight. It is necessary to separate the refrigerant from the recovered material contaminated by lubricant for recycling and reuse the refrigerant.

  • In bio-jet fuel production, selecting operating conditions of hydro-upgrading is of great importance to make iso-Paraffin rich hydrocarbons with carbon distribution including jet fuel range. Herein, iso-Paraffin rich biofuel including jet fuel range hydrocarbons ($C_8-C_{16}$) is produced from simultaneous cracking and isomerization using n-Paraffin rich hydrocarbon derived from hydrotreated vegetable oil over 0.5 wt..% Pt/Zeolite catalyst. We report and analyze the yields and compositions in the produced hydrocarbons affected by various operating conditions, such as reaction temperature, reaction pressure, molar ratio of reactants, and weight hourly space velocity. Aforementioned operating conditions not only can help interpret the reaction dynamics of hydro-upgrading, but also further produce bio jet-fuel after distillation.

  • In an aero gas-turbine engine, a surface air-oil heat exchanger (SAOHE) is used to cool the oil system for the gearboxes and electric generators. The SAOHE is installed inside the fan casing of the engine in order to dissipate the heat from the oil system into the bypass duct stream. The purpose of this study was to develop an effective numerical method for designing an SAOHE for an aero gas-turbine engine. A two-dimensional model using a porous medium was developed to evaluate the aero-thermal performance of the fins of the heat exchanger, and a one-dimensional flow and thermal network program was developed to save time and cost in the evaluation of the heat exchanger performance. Using this network program, the pressure drop and heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger were predicted, and the results were compared with two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics results and experiment data for validation.
