  • Since infants' skin is very weak and has poor adaptability to environment, they are vulnerable to dermatitis caused by chemicals. Organic cotton for baby wear with the same functions in inner and outer wears can be considered the most suitable fiber. Therefore, this study analyzes products and colors of Korean and U.S. baby wear brands which use organic cotton. Of the total of seven organic brands of baby wear examined in this study, three were Korean baby wear brands and four were U.S. brands. and design colors of total 331 items were examined on the web. The results of comparative analysis showed that there were more U.S. brands than Korean brands in designs by uses. Color analysis showed that Korean natural cotton color was preferred and Y, G colors are commonly used, but colors of U.S. brands featured increased variety compared with Korean brands. Therefore, the Korean infant and toddler brand using organic cotton requires more diverse designs and delicate and broad colors.

Therefore, this study was to analyze products and colors of domestic and Japanese baby wear brands which use organic cotton. Of total six organic brands for baby wear, there are three domestic baby wear brands and three Japanese brands, and design colors of total 213 items were examined on the web. The results of comparative analysis showed that there were more Japanese brands than domestic brand in designs by uses. Color analysis showed that natural cotton color was preferred and YR colors are commonly used, but the colors of Japanese brands were widely distributed and those of domestic brands were relatively narrow.

  • This study analyzed the physical properties and flame retardancy of Tencel FR/Cotton complex knit fabrics in order to satisfy two aspects of eco-friendliness and functionality. The flame retardant (FR) treatment of complex knit fabrics was applied by a pad-dry-cure method for additional functionality. Tensile strength, extension, bursting strength, LOI, and flame retardancy were measured by the KS (Korean Standard) K manual. The hand value knit fabrics were measured by KES-FB system. Subsequently, tensile strength and extension of wale and tensile strength of course increased in tandem with the Tencel FR yarn content. Tencel FR/Cotton complex knit fabrics were suitable for summer-weight and for baby clothes through the KES-FB system measurements. The bursting strength of Tencel FR/Cotton complex knit fabrics decreased as the contents of the Tencel FR increased; in addition, LOI increased as the contents of Tencel FR increased. This was due to the Tencel FR flame resistance function; however, the tensile strength decreased. The optimum fiber content of Tencel FR/cotton content was 1:1. The optimum conditions of flame retardant treatment were a treatment temperature $130^{\circ}C$ and the concentration of finishing agent and assistance binder (AR4260) was 35% and 1%, respectively.

  • By the turn of the century, our society has been gradually more interested in environmental problems than any other time. Ecological change spurred by industrial pollution is occurring beyond the borders of nations, and has emerged as a global issue. Such change is resulting in exhaustion of natural resources and energy, and serious climatic change. In this study, main focus regarding the process of the fashion product design system was placed on the sustainable fashion design of organic cotton as a positive and alternative suggestion. It is expected that the results of this study contribute to the fashion design planning not only for future generation but also for the present time. This study researched on brands that produced their fashion products using organic cotton. The following cases proved to possess sustainability in their product system. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Firstly, sustainable design in organic cotton products has been a progressive ere-design in 2000s. It is mainly focus concerned with recycling and re-use of materials to protect environment. It is not chemical dependant and takes a particular care in eliminating waste water and energy in the dyeing process. It is an environmentally sustainable design better than all the other design processes. Secondly, it is a design that cares for the common good of society and the global system of fair trading. The fair trading of organic cotton products induced a change in the structure of production system, while defending human rights. It also gave benefits by promoting development in local society and progress in traditional skills. Not to mention that it contributed to building up the concept of transparency in the global economic system. Lastly, the brands emphasize their social responsibility and management ethics to observe environmental policy which is established to protect our nature and people. Their public information reminds customers of the importance of protecting the environment from diverse pollution. Moreover, they hold social events to promote public awareness for environmental Issues. This study dealt only with the organic cotton, a small subset of the subject of sustainable design. It can be extended and applied to various other sustainable fashion design as a solution for global environmental issues.

  • School uniforms are mass produced by large companies and prominent fashion designers. However many high school students modify their uniform or use fashion accessaries to pursue their individualities and their unique style. The objectives of this research were to identify uniform modification and fashion accessory wearing according to the attitudes toward uniform of high school students. The results were as follows; 1. Factors of the attitudes toward school uniform were style and brand, fashion, role intimation, individuality, and neatness. High school students were classified as the uniform indifference group, the pro-uniform group, and the centrist-uniform group according to their attitudes toward uniform. 2. Many students in academic or boys' high schools were classified into the centrist-uniform stoup, and many in art & physical educational or coeducational high schools were classified into the pro-uniform group. The pro-uniform group modified uniform more and stated that the regulation on the fashion accessory wearing was very strict. The uniform indifference group modified uniform less than other groups and complained less about regulation of fashion accessary wearing. 3. Students in art & physical educational high schools showed more positive tendency toward uniform attitudes, uniform modification, and fashion accessary regulation compliances.

  • This paper investigates the physical properties of organic cotton staple yarns manufactured by ring and siro spinning methods as well as analyzes the physical properties of fabric specimens knitted with staple yarns made by these two methods. The breaking stress and evenness of organic ring staple yarns showed the same level for the Japanese specimens as the control yarns; in addition, the same coefficient for the friction of the manufactured yarns and Japanese specimens was also shown. These results makes it possible to manufacture organic staple ring yarns from organic cotton fibers. The tenacity and breaking strain of siro staple yarns were higher than ring staple yarns. The evenness and friction coefficient of siro staple yarns were lower than the ring staple yarns; in addition, hairiness and the number of siro staple yarns was significantly lower than the ring staple yarns. The dimensional stabilities of knitted fabrics by 20 Ne and 30 Ne siro staple yarns were superior to ring staple yarns. The color fastnesses of washing, perspiration and abrasion of knitted fabrics by two spinning methods showed the same level as the 4.5 grade; however, the light fastness of knitted fabric by siro staple yarns was superior to ring staple yarns. It was shown that the siro spinning method (using eco-friendly organic cotton fibers) was applicable to a high sensible knitted garment that overcame drawbacks of organic fibers related to shrinkable properties after washing and low color fastness to light.
