Effects of the Classes on the Path of the Light through the Lens Focused on Substantial Concepts for the Elementary School Gifted in Science (렌즈를 지나는 빛의 경로 학습에서 기본 개념을 강화한 초등 과학 영재 수업의 효과)

  • In this paper, we suggested that those elementary school students who are gifted in science should be taught basic and fundamental concepts to solve applied problems. We developed a teaching model based on a lesson regarding the path that light takes when passing through a lens on the base of refraction of light. We applied the teaching model to scientifically-gifted elementary school students and analyzed the results. The teaching model is based on the circulation loaming model appropriate for learning such concepts. The problems were designed and applied in order to determine the students' level of concept skills held and also to develop new teaching tools to help their understanding of concepts. As a result, we confirmed that the students, who were unable to describe the path of the light before the course of instruction was given, were able to draw and explain the path of light passing trough lens by using the law of refraction following the instruction.

  • 최근 소셜 네트워크를 이용한 학습 방법이 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 동일한 영역에 지식을 공유하고 새로운 정보를 웹에서 생성하는 등 집단지성 학습자들이 계속적으로 늘어가고 있으며, 특히 IT 학습을 위한 온라인기반 교육은 관심도와 직군에 따른 집단지성을 통한 효과적인 학습 성취도를 높일 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 웹 기반을 중심으로 한 IT집단지성 학습자들의 개인차를 파악하고, 각 특성에 따른 다양성을 적용하여 학습과정 중 자신에게 적합한 학습경로를 파악하여 학습의 지속적인 진행에 있어 정확한 자료를 제공하고 효율적인 학습의 진행이 이루어져 성취도를 높일 수 있도록 학습 성취도 예측 시스템을 연구 개발하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 IT습자들이 자신의 개인차를 파악하기 위해 학습의 유형, 학습몰입, 인지적 능력, 개인적 성향, 창의적 성향 등을 활용한 검사도구의 개발이 선행되어야 한다. 다음으로, IT 전공자 혹은 비전공자를 대상으로 예비조사를 실시하고 그 결과를 바탕으로 학습 성취도 예측을 가능하게 하기위한 시스템을 설계하고자 한다. 향후 본 연구의 결과로 학습자의 학습 성취도를 향상시키고, 예측 결과에 의한 집단지성 그룹을 좀 더 효과적으로 운영 할 수 있는 시스템을 구축할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

Exploring how to use virtual reality for elementary school students (초등학생 대상 가상현실 활용방안 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary school students' interest in virtual reality(VR) technology, usability, and the possibility of learning media. In particular, it is intended to be used for content creation for artificial intelligence(AI) education in the future. The effectiveness of elementary education using virtual reality technology was confirmed through the analysis of overseas research, and the applicability to elementary school students in Korea was analyzed. To proceed with the analysis, various virtual reality contents were provided to 5th grader of elementary school, and then, interest, usability, usefulness, and possibility of use in class and learning were surveyed. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that students' interest in virtual reality contents was very high, and that it could be used sufficiently as a learning medium. It suggests that it can be used in artificial intelligence education and data science education, which have recently been emphasized in importance. In particular, virtual reality can be used to simulate abstract data and artificial intelligence.

The Recognition Characteristics of Science Gifted Students on the Earth System based on their Thinking Style (과학 영재 학생들의 사고양식에 따른 지구시스템에 대한 인지 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze recognition characteristics of science gifted students on the earth system based on their thinking style. The subjects were 24 science gifted students at the Science Institute for Gifted Students of a university located in metropolitan city in Korea. The students' thinking styles were firstly examined on the basis of the Sternberg's theory of mental self-government. And then, the students were divided into two groups: Type I group(legislative, judicial, global, liberal) and Type II group(executive, local, conservative) based on Sternberg's theory. Data was collected from three different type of questionnaires(A, B, C types), interview, word association method, drawing analyses, concept map, hidden dimension inventory, and in-depth interviews. The findings of analysis indicated that their thinking styles were characterized by 'Legislative', 'Executive', 'Anarchic', 'Global', 'External', 'Liberal' styles. Their preference were conducting new projects and using creative problem solving processes. The results of students' recognition characteristics on earth system were as follows: First, though the two groups' quantitative value on 'System Understanding' was very similar, there were considerable distinctions in details. Second, 'Understanding the Relationship in the System' was closely connected to thinking styles. Type I group was more advantageous with multiple, dynamic, and recursive approach. Third, in the relation to 'System Generalization' both of the groups had similar simple interpretational ability of the system, but Type I group was better on generalization when 'hidden dimension inventory' factor was added. On the system prediction factor, however, students' ability was weak regardless of the type. Consequently, more specific development strategies on various objects are needed for the development and application of the system learning program. Furthermore, it is expected that this study could be practically and effectively used on various fields related to system recognition.

The Effects of Project Activities on the Development of Problem Solving Skills and Creativity of Elementary School Children (프로젝트 활동이 초등학교 학생의 문제해결력 및 창의성에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of project activities on the development of problem solving skills and creativity of elementary school children. To achieve this purpose, 83 second grade children were sampled in Seoul-City, and they were assigned to experimental group and control group. Two project activities of social studies subject were treated to the experimental group for 4 weeks. And, the ‘Problem Solving Skills Test’ and ‘Creativity Test’were administered to both group children for the pretest and posttest. The collected data were analyzed by t-test to test the research hypothesis. The major findings of this study were as follows: Firstly, there were statistically significant differences between experimental group and control group on the posttest scores of problem solving skills. It showed that the posttest scores of comprehension skills[t(81)=3.09, p<.01], practical skills[t(81)=2.40, p<.05], and the total score of problem solving skills[t(81)=4.24, p<.01] were significantly higher than that of control group. Secondly, there were statistically significant differences between experimental group and control group on the posttest scores of creativity. It showed that the posttest scores of fluency[t(81)=4.33, p<.01], originality[t(81)=2.85, p<.01], and the total score of creativity[t(81)=6.43, p<.01] were significantly higher than that of control group.

Influencing Factors on Deliberate Practice among Musically Talented Adolescents: On Passion and Achievement Goals (음악재능 청소년의 계획적 연습에 영향을 미치는 요인: 열정과 성취 목적을 중심으로)

  • This study was to examine whether musically talented adolescents' passion and achievement goals influence their deliberate practice. Of the musically talented adolescents surveyed from two arts high schools in Seoul, Korea, 597 completed and returned the questionnaires. Their average age was 17.4 years. Paired t-test on musically talented adolescents' passion(i.e., harmonious passion, and obsessive passion) and achievement goals(i.e., mastery goals, performance-approach goals, and performance-avoidance goals) indicated that harmonious passion were higher than obsessive passion. Mastery goals were higher than performance-approach goals. And performance-approach goals were higher than performance-avoidance goals. Independent t-tests were measured between high and low deliberate practice(DP) groups. High DP group showed higher harmonious and obsessive passion, and mastery and performance goals than low DP group. It was also found that two types of passion(i.e., harmonious and obsessive) positively influenced on deliberate practice via mastery goals.

Application of Eye Tracker for Study on the Effect of Analytic Proof Learning of Gifted Students (수학영재 학생들의 분석적 증명 학습 효과 검증을 위한 시선추적기의 활용)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of gaze and the change of the proof learning achievement after learning the analytic method for proof to mathematical gifted students using eye tracking technique. In order to complete the purpose of this study, a mixed method research was used, that is a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Quantitative analysis was conducted based on the data obtained through the eye tracker, and qualitative analysis was also done using post interview data to make up for the quantitative analysis. The subjects of this study were 8 mathematical gifted 3rd grade middle school students in the gifted education center. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the learning of analysis leads to a change of gaze in the proof learning of students. The students, after learning the analysis, moved their gaze from the bottom to the top when solving the proof problem, and the occupancy rate of the gaze to the bottom of the proof was higher than the higher part. Second, the change of gaze caused by the learning of the analysis have a correlation with the achievement of the proof learning and it can be seen that the method learning improves the achievement of the proof learning of the students.

Design of a Hopeful Career Forecasting Program for the Career Education (진로교육을 위한 희망진로 예측프로그램 설계)

  • In the wake of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the problem of career education in schools has become a big issue. While various studies are being conducted on services or technologies to effectively handle artificial intelligence and big data, in the field of education, data on students is simply processed. Therefore, in this paper, we are going to design and present career prediction programs for students using artificial intelligence and big data. Using observational data from students at the institute, the decision tree is constructed with the C4.5 algorithm known to be most intelligent and effective in the decision tree and is used to predict students' path of hope. As a result, the coefficient of kappa exceeded 0.7 and showed a fairly low average error of 0.1 degrees. As shown in this study, a number of studies and data will be deployed to help guide students in their consultation and to provide them with classroom attitudes and directions.

Development of a Thin Layer Chromatography Experimental Kit for Middle School Students (중학생들을 위한 얇은막 크로마토그래피 실험 키트의 개발)

  • One of the most important characteristics in the seventh educational course is an enforcement of differentiated level curriculum. Therefore, development of various different level educational subjects is needed. A new chromatographic experimental kit which is helpful for middle school students to understand chromatographic principles is needed to correct some mistakes of chromatographic part within the 6th educational course's middle school textbook. In this research, a new thin layer chromatography(TLC) experimental kit for middle school students are developed by using acid-base indicator as samples and ethyl alcohol, ethylacetate, hexane as eluents. The kit is applied to two kinds of middle school student groups(general group & genius group) and two kinds of teacher groups(science teacher & non-science teacher) and an efficacy of the new chromatographic kits are evaluated through making up some questions.

A Study on Effect of Learner Centered Mathematical Club Based on Mathematics History (수학사 기반 학습자 중심 수학동아리 효과 분석 연구)

  • This study assumes alternative character of the operation of mathematical club in middle school. The case that operated the voluntary mathematics club for one year was analyzed and the educational effect was considered. First, the examination instrument for choosing the members of mathematics club was developed and used. And, diverse teaching and learning materials for improving creativity and mathematical ability of the members were used. Second, the difference of learning result between the experiment group and control one who joined the activities of mathematics club was analyzed. Finally, mathematical club activity based on mathematics history appeared to be effective in improving academic achievement and mathematics exploration activity.
