The Necessity of Video Recording in Archaeology and the Visual Archaeology (고고학에서 영상의 필요성과 영상고고학)

  • Changes in a society and visual media has a tight relationship. Photography represented the last 20th century in the visual media; while the 21st century we live in is represented by moving image(video). The change of visual media also brought changes to the archaeological recordings. As information is gathered from the field work in archaeology, it seems that use of video recording, a reliable way of collecting and recording data, will increase. The process of archaeological excavations can be considered as a contents itself. Also, video recording has many advantages when recording environmental surrounding of the sites and artifacts, for the reservation of the scenery, and as recorded heritage of the humankind. Video recording can be a tool of conversion to public archaeology to devote to its social and academic roles. Considering all of the above, studying ways to record and preserve visual materials is essential in the field of archaeology and we should be prepared for it. We strongly propose reinstatement of the visual archaeology, which should be studied in archaeological perspective. The direction of the study of visual archaeology can be summarized into two. First is the study on the video recording during field work and the archive of video recordings. Second is the study on the media as the tool of communication. More detailed and organized research should be considered in depth in the archaeological theory and methods.

  • 본 논문에서는 감시 시스템의 기록과 검색의 효율성을 높이기 위해 감시 영상이 가지는 특징을 충분히 고려하여 영상 처리를 적용하였으며 이를 위해 배경 영역과 감시할 물체 영역을 분리하여 검색하는 시스템을 설계한다. 제안한 영상 시스템은 CCD 카메라로부터 영상을 입력받아 먼저 감시 대상의 배경화면과 감시할 대상인 물체 영역을 추출하여 카메라에서 이동물체의 생성시 정지 영상으로 기록함으로서 필요시에 즉시 시간별 또는 장소별로 감시 영상을 실시간적으로 효율적인 검색이 가능한 시스템을 구성하였다.

  • The classic method of recording and retrieving of images for video monitoring was very inefficient since the system required huge storage capacity. It's because it stored images without separating background and monitored objects. The recording and retrieval method of images for the video monitoring system we proposed in this paper makes it possible to retrieve images easily by using database by the hour and the place. Hence, it retrieve images much more efficiently than the existing method.

A Study on the Core Metadata Elements for YouTube Video Archiving in Public Institutions (공공기관 유튜브 동영상 아카이빙을 위한 메타데이터 핵심 요소 연구)

  • YouTube videos of public institutions are digital public records that need to be managed and preserved. As such, the video and the metadata describing the video should also be preserved. This study aims to select the key metadata elements necessary for archiving videos published on YouTube by public institutions. To this end, five high-level areas, namely the description, structure, management, preservation, and user participation, and the metadata elements of 10 subareas, were designed by referring to NAK 8, PREMIS, ISAD(G), and YouTube metadata. Afterward, the metadata elements designed by 14 experts were verified. Lastly, the validity and reliability of the evaluation results were verified. Of the 63 elements, 33 satisfied the validity and reliability criteria. Thus, these elements were selected as the core metadata for archiving YouTube videos in public institutions.

Compression of Elemental Images Using Block Division in 3D Integral Imaging (3D 집적 영상에서 영역 분할을 이용한 요소 영상의 압축 기법)

  • Integral imaging is a well-known 3D image recording and display technique. The huge size of integral imaging data requires a compression scheme to store and transmit 3D scenes. In the conventional compression scheme, the data amount of elemental images depends on the various recording condition such as the positional location of a 3D object, the illumination and specification of the lenslet array even if an identical pickup system is used. In this paper, to reduce the dependence of the image characteristics of elemental images on the pickup conditions, a compression scheme using block division on the elemental image of integral imaging is proposed. The proposed scheme provides an improved compression ratio by considering the local similarity of elemental images picked up from three-dimensional objects according to a positional location. To test the proposed scheme, various elemental images are picked up and a compression process is then carried out u sing a standard MPEG-4. Based on compression ratio results, the proposed compression scheme is improved by approximately 9% compared with the conventional compression method.

  • ADD(Agency for Defense Development) has developed digital audio-visual archives management system to ensure easy access and long-term preservation for digital audio-visual archives. This paper covers total process of the system development and database management in the aspect of preservation and utilization by users' easy search through digitization of audio-visual archives. In detail, it contains system design for images and video data handling, standard workflow establishment, data quality, and metadata settings for database by converting an analog data into digital format. Also, this study emphasizes the importance of audio-visual archives management system through cost-effectiveness analysis.

Recording method is classified into two groups. one is the direct recording of video data for screen, another is the recording of an exchange of data. This study proposes the new data-oriented recording method to reduce the readiness time for replay and the improvement scheme.

  • 3차원 영상정보처리에 이용되는 변형 삼각간섭계는 인코히어런트 광을 이용한 3차원 영상정보의 기록과 복원에 이용되고 있다. 최근에는 3차원 영상의 기록과 재생이외의 분야, 예를 들면 3차원 물체의 결함 검출 및 현미경분야에 대한 활용 연구도 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 분야에 응용이 되고 있는 변형 삼각간섭계의 개선과 이에 대한 일반적인 전달함수와 PSF(point-spread function)를 제시하였으며, 변형 삼각간섭계에 대한 복소흘로그램 생성과 수치적 복원영상결과도 제시하였다.
