To investigate the antimicrobial and anti-halitosis effects of Alnus firma extracts and gallic acid (GA) isolated from A. firma, we measured their antimicrobial activities against oral pathogens and their inhibitory effects on the cell adhesiveness and acid production of oral pathogens. In addition, the levels of volatile sulfur compounds were determined by using oral chroma. The dichloromethane (DCM) fraction has broad antimicrobial activity, and the ethylacetate (EA) fraction showed a relatively high level of antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromons gingivalis. Especially, the GA and DCM fractions had significant inhibitory effects on the attachment and acid production of S. mutans and Streptococcus salivarius, respectively. The 2% MeOH extract of A. firma showed a significant inhibitory effect on the production of volatile oral compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide, which can cause bad breath and halitosis. Two percent GA also had a significant inhibitory effect on the production of hydrogen sulfide. Our study showed that the active fractions and GA of A. firma could be suitable resources for development as a natural antibiotic agent for the treatment of infectious oral diseases.

To identify the immunogens of a PRT strain of Infectious Hematopoietci Necrosis Virus (IHNV) isolated from cultrued fish in Korea (Park et al, 1993). a panel of 4 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against IHNV-PRT strain and two polyclonal antisera from rainbow trout survived IHN disease were prepared. Proteins of purified IHNV-PRT strain were analysed on 10% SDS-PAGE and transferred onto NC paper and were incubated with the antibody solutions. With the polyclonal antibodies, four bands ($M_1$, $M_2$, G and 90Kd) were detected and the band density was in the order of $M_2$ > 90Kd > $M_1$ > G. However, with the MAbs, only two bands(G and 90Kd) were detected. The origin of 90Kd protein was not clear but maybe cell. All the results represented that among the five proteins of IHNV-PRT strain (Park et al., 1993), $M_2$, $M_1$ and G proteins were immunogens and $M_2$ protein was the strongest one.
Tolaasin, a pore-forming toxin, is a 1,985 Da peptide produced by Pseudomonas tolaasii and causes a brown blotch disease on cultivated mushrooms. Tolaasin forms pores on the plasma membrane of various cells including fungi, bacteria, plant as well as erythrocytes, and destroys cell structure. $Zn^{+2}$ has been known to block the tolaasin activity by an unknown mechanism. Thus, we investigated the inhibitory effects of $Zn^{+2}$ on the tolaasin-induced hemolysis to understand the molecular mechanism of tolaasin-induced pore formation. $Zn^{+2}$ and $Cd^{+2}$ inhibited the tolaasin-induced hemolysis in a dose-dependent manner and their Ki values were 170 ${\mu}M$ and 20 mM, respectively. The effect of $Zn^{+2}$ was reversible since the subsequent addition of EDTA chelates $Zn^{+2}$ and removes the inhibitory effect of $Zn^{+2}$. When an osmotic protectant, PEG 2000, was added, the tolaasin-induced hemolysis was not observed. After the removal of osmotic protectant by centrifugation, resuspended erythrocytes with fresh medium were immediately hemolyzed, while the addition of $Zn^{+2}$ prevented from hemolysis, implying that tolaasin-induced pores on the membrane were already formed in the medium containing osmotic protectant. These results suggest that $Zn^{+2}$ inhibits the activity of tolaasin pores and it has minor effects on the membrane binding of tolaasin and the formation of pore.

Stem canker and tuber rot symptoms were observed on yam grown in Andong and Jinju, Korea in 2011. A total of 20 isolates of Rhizoctonia and allied fungi were obtained from the symptomatic plants. Among the isolates, 8 isolates were identified as Rhizoctonia solani and 12 isolates as Ceratobasidium sp. based on rDNA-internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence similarity. In the cluster analysis of rDNA-ITS sequences, 7 isolates of R. solani belonged to AG 2-2IIIB and remaining one to AG 1-1A. In addition, among the 12 isolates of Ceratobasidium sp., 7 isolates belonged to AG-Fa, three isolates to AG-A and the other two isolates to AG-Fb and AG-O, respectively. Pathogenicity tests showed that all the R. solani AG 2-2IIIB isolates are pathogenic on stem and tuber of yam but R. solani AG 1-1A and all the Ceratobasidium isolates are non-pathogenic. The results indicate that R. solani AG 2-2IIIB is an important pathogen causing stem canker and tuber rot on yams grown in the study areas. This is the first report of R. solani AG 2-2IIIB causing stem canker and tuber rot of yam in Korea.
In 2004, average temperature was higher, and rainfall was less than those of previous year, The diseases of rice, barley, pepper, chinese melon, apple and oriental pear were surveyed. Seedling diseases, leaf blast, sheath blight and bacterial blight of rice, phytophthova blight, virus diseases and anthracnose of pepper, and sudden wilt syndrome and powdery mildew of chinese melon grown in plastic greenhouse were severe. Especially, sheath blight and bacterial blight of rice occurred two times higher than those of previous year, Panicle blight of rice decreased about 4 times, compared with the previous year, presumed that the lower rainy days, rainfall and RH suppressed spread of the fungal pathogens to panicles of rice. Lower rainfall during mid- and late Aug caused three-times less occurrence of phytophtora blight of red-pepper than that of the previous year, Another diseases surveyed occurred similar or less than those of the previous year.
High-resolution satellite image mosaics are becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis as an essential image processing to create a large image constructed from several smaller images. In this paper, we present an automatic seamline extraction technique and the procedure to generate a mosaic image by this technique. For more effective seamline extraction in the overlap region of adjacent images, an NDVI-based seamline extraction technique is developed, which takes advantage of the computational time and memory. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) is an index of plant "greeness" or photosynthetic activity that is employed to extract the initial seamline. The NDVI can divide into manmade region and natural region. The cost image is obtained by the canny edge detector and the buffering technique is used to extract the ranging cost image. The seamline is extracted by applying the Dijkstra algorithm to a cost image generated through the labeling process of the extracted edge information. Histogram matching is also conducted to alleviate radiometric distortion between adjacent images acquired at different time. In the experimental results using the KOMPSAT-2/3 satellite imagery, it is confirmed that the proposed method greatly reduces the visual discontinuity caused by geometric difference of adjacent images and the computation time.

Purpose: In patients with splenic trauma, Computed Tomography (CT) scan is helpful in selecting treatment options and evaluating resolution after NOM (Non-Operative Management). The purpose of this study was to suggest a CT based hemoperitoneum (HP) scoring system that can easily be used by clinicians to evaluate the severity of injury and recovery. Methods: A retrospective review of patients with splenic trauma admitted to our hospital between May 2003 and January 2013 was conducted. Patients diagnosed with isolated spleen injury who had a CT scan on admission were included. 1 or 2 points were given according to location and amount of hematoma in the CT image. Using the existing ultrasonography (US) based HP scoring system, the same method was applied to obtain our CT based HP scoring (CBHS) system, which ranges from 0 to 8 points. The CBHS system can be easily used by clinicians for a quick assessment of splenic injury. Results: Of the 39 patients meeting the inclusion criteria, 6 patients were managed operatively and 33 nonoperatively. There was a significant difference in CBHS between the OM (operative management) group and the NOM group.(p=0.03) CBHS showed correlation with Hb (hemoglobin), Hct (hematocrit), spleen injury grade(AAST), and Hounsfield unit of ROI (Region of interest). (p=0.17, p=0.18, p<0.000, p=0.02, respectively) After successful NOM with stabilized Hb level, the amount of hemoperitoneum was scored in the follow-up CT. CBHS demonstrated correlation with decreased spleen injury grade, decreased Hounsfield unit of ROI (Region of interest) (p=0.039, p=0.049, respectively), and also objectively reflected patient recovery. Conclusion: CBHS can be used as an objective and intuitive tool for clinicians in grading the severity of splenic injury by scoring the amount of hemoperitoneum, and in assessing recovery.

It was pointed out that the terrain distortion of SAR image is even worse than that of optical image although SAR imagery has the advantages of being independent of solar illumination and weather conditions. It is thus necessary to correct terrain distortion in SAR image for various application areas to integrate SAR and optical image information. There has to be a clear evaluation of terrain correction of high resolution SAR image according to the quality of DEM because the DEM of study site is generally used in the process of terrain correction. To achieve this issue, this paper compared the effects of quality of Digital Elevation Model(DEM) in the process of terrain correction of high resolution SAR images, using the DEM produced from 1:5000 topographic contour maps, LiDAR DEM, ASTER GDEM, SRTM DEM. We used TerraSAR-X and Cosmo-SkyMed, as the test data set, which are constructed on the same X-band SAR system as KOMPSAT-5. In order to evaluate quantitatively the correction results, we conducted comparative evaluation with the KOMPSAT-2 ortho image of the same region. The evaluation results showed that the DEM produced from 1:5000 topographic contour maps achieved successful results in the terrain correction of SAR image compared with the other DEM data, and the widely used SRTM DEM data in various applications was not suitable for the terrain correction of high resolution SAR images.
A ploygalacturonase-produchg yeast was isolated from Cheju soil by selective eivichment media. One strain which has the highesl activity of polygalacturonase was selected. The characle~ishcs of the strain CS-2 were as follows: CS-2 utilized xylose. sucrose, maltose, u.ehalose, cellobiose. melibiose, lactose, raffinose, inosiiol, dulicilol, and dextrose, but did not utilized galactose, nitrate. nit~te, and lysine. Growth of CS-2 was inhibited by cyclohexamide, 1% acetic acid, and high concenaation (over 50%) of glucose. It grew at $30^{\circ}C$ but did 'IIOL $35^{\circ}C$. The cell size ofthe strain CS-2 was 2.9 p ~ n in length and 1.3 $\mu$ in diameter. Vegetable reproductmn was multiple budding and ascospre was present I to 4. Pseudomycelia or true myceliua formation were not observed In any of the cullureq. These results suggest that strain CS-2 is most likely a strain related Cryptococcus spp. (Cryptococcu spp. CS-2). When polygalacturonase or ihe yeast was induced by addition of polygalactoronic acid, polygalacturonase activity was detected in culture supernatent. There was a peak of specific activity a1 he mid-stationary phase(3 days culture) of growth. Polygalacturonase specific activity of Crylmcoccus sp. CS-2 was 2.96 unitsling. The molecular weighl ol'polygalacturonase was showed to be 46 KDa by both SDS-PAGE and activity stailling.

In order to investigate the pathogenicity and development of differential identification technique in the Yersinia species and other entericbacteria, we isolated 5 strains of Y.pseudotuberculosis from spring water sites in Seoul. The biochemical characteristics of isolated strains revealed that indole, VP($25^{\circ}C$, $37^{\circ}C$), $H_2S$, phenylalanine, lysine, arginine, ornithine, gas from glucose, lactose, sucrose, sorbitol, oxidase and motility($37^{\circ}C$) were all negative and urease, glucose, mannitol, salicin, catalase and motility($25^{\circ}C$) were all positive. To detect the causative agent of pseudotuberculosis(Y.pseudotuberculosis), we carried out a study using a PCR with inv primers complementary to the pathogenic region and found that all strains were positive, this revealed that strains from spring waters were pathogenic. Also 16S rDNA for total 5 strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis were amplified and a stretch of approximately 1,450 nucleotides were sequenced and analyzed. The 16S rDNA nucleotide sequence homologies among Yersinia species ranged 97.5% to 100% and between Y.pseudotuberculosis and other entericbacteria they ranged 93.0% to 95.1%. The Phylogenetic tree generated from the sequence analysis of the 16S rDNA gene showed 3 coherent clusters that could be separated into Y.pseudotuberculsis strains, some Yersinia species strains and other entericbacteria strains.
