Countries of the world are competing for the collection and utilization of genetic resources, which is a resource of value-added industrialization. We are building database of silkworm and mulberry resources with morphological, genetic characteristics data etc. Moreover, recent bioactive compound has been receiving increasing attention. So we analyzed 1-deoxynojirimycin(1-DNJ) content as a this item in addition to the basic information using 363 strains(varieties) of mulberry genetic resources. They were grown under the same environment and conditions. Mulberry leaves were collected and then freeze-dried and powdered for 1-DNJ test. As a result, 1-DNJ mean content of 363 mulberry strains was $0.176{\pm}0.077%$, and the coefficient of variation (CV) was 43.5%. The variation between the strains was greatly severe. Among the tested strains, 'C1D89/29' was showed the highest content of 0.47%, whereas 'Pumbo 24' and 'Turkey E' were showed the lowest content of 0.05% respectively. The content of 1-DNJ of 16 mulberry varieties for silkworm rearing were compared. Average concentration was $0.17{\pm}0.04%$, and the coefficient of variation (CV) was 22.8%. Variation among cultivars was not significant. Finally we selected 1-DNJ high-containing 11 strains. They are as follows. 'C1D89/29', 'Hiihak', 'Jeokasibmunja', 'Gweonchil', 'Botongsibmunja', 'Jeokchuk', 'bulguksang', 'Geunsookgojo', 'Busanggeum', 'Guksang 20' and 'Taekwang' which are more than twice of the overall average content.
Mulberry leaves contain many natural components and are considerable resource for natural antiokidants. The antioxidant effect of 'Cheongilppong' collected from Chuncheon, Suwon and Wanju regions were investigated with minilum L-100 device and ARAW-KIT (anti-radical ability of water-soluble substance), in comparison to the ascorbic acid. The measurement parts were mulberry leaves collected from different areas and some kinds of mulberry branches. We obtained that even if samples were same variety, antioxidant capacity of those showed different results according to collected regions. Also, antioxidant effect of mulberry leaves were higher than that of branches. The order of antioxidant effect in Spring was Chuncheon > Suwon > Wanju. The antioxidant effect of mulberry leaves collected from Chuncheon, Suwon and Wanju regions of just before the coloration stage with anthocyanin in fruits were 3627.5 nmol, 2620.0 nmol 1360.7 nmol (ascorbic acid equivalents), respectively. In Autumn, the antioxidant effect and hardness quality of mulberry leaves were increased gradually until just before fallen leaves stage. Therefore, we concluded that being the most suitable period for collecting mulberry leaves as a antiokidant resource is from the latter part of May to the first ten days of June.

Resveratrol is naturally occurring phytoalexin compounds produced by grape berries, peanuts, pine tree, mulberry fruits and their products in response to stress such as fungal infection, heavy metal ions or UV irradiation. The objective of this study was to determine resveratrol contents in wild-type mulberry leaves (Morus alba L., M. bombycis Koidz, and M. Lhou (Ser.) Koidz) collected from Won-ju, In-je and Yang-yang regions, Gangwon province, Korea. Resveratrol contents in wild-type mulberry leaves were higher in Autumn's than in Spring's, and higher than 16 cultivar's. Among the samples, 'No. 3', collected from Won-ju region and 'No. 7' collected from In-je showed high resveratrol contents of 539 and $491{\mu}g$/100 g DW (dry weight; DW), respectively, through the collection time. Therefore, two mulberry trees might be promising as potent resources for mulberry breeding and functional material development.

We bred a mulberry cultivar named Suhyang through local adaptability test, which is under registration as a new cultivar for fruit production. Local adaptability test was carried out at four places (Suwon, Kongju, Wanju and Jinju) for six years from 2007 to 2012. This is belonging to (Morus alba L.) crossed between Josaenghongpisang (Morus alba L.) and Kaeryang (Morus alba L.) among mulberry genetic resources preserved in Suwon. Suhyang was high yielding cultivar in fruit productivity by 12% compared to control cultivar 'Chungil (Morus alba L.)' for four years. Although Suhyang was higher in sugar content of mulberry fruits, it was bigger than that of 'Chungil'. It is adaptable to every where except the places where cold damage and sclerotic disease happen frequently.

We analyzed rutin content using mulberry genetic resources. They were grown under the same environment and conditions. Mulberry leaves were collected and then freeze-dried and powdered for rutin test. As a result, mean content of mulberry strains was $0.52{\pm}0.25%$, and the coefficient of variation (CV) was 47.9%. The variation between the strains was greatly severe. Among the tested strains, 'Buyoungsang' was showed the highest content of 1.37%, whereas 'Cheongeunsipmunja' and 'Mujeonsipmunja' were showed the lowest content of 0.06% respectively. The content of rutin of 16 mulberry varieties for silkworm rearing were compared. 'Cheongolppong' was showed the highest content of 0.69%, whereas 'Cheongilppong' was showed the lowest content of 0.14 %. Finally we selected rutin high-containing 9 strains. They are as follows. 'Buyoungsang', 'Yeulbon', 'Dangsang 5', 'A8', 'Aja', 'Seongsu 5', 'Sawonppong 12', 'Hwanyoupjosaengnosang' and 'Hwansipjosaeng' which are more than twice of the overall average content.
3-Chloro-2-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-(5-methyl-3-phenyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-ylmethoxy)-phenyl]-4,5,6,7-tetrahy dro-2H-indazole(EK-5439) demonstrated rice selectivity and herbicidal activity on annual weeds, such as Echinochloa oryzicola, Monochoria vaginalis, Lindernia pyxidaria, Rotala indica, Aneilema keisak, Cyperus difformis, and Ludwigia prostrata at doses of 16-63 g a.i./ha. However, the application window was limited from pre-emergence to 5 days after transplanting. The control efficacy of EK-5439 on barnyardgrass was 4 times higher than that of oxadiazon. EK-5439 was excellently safe to the 16 different transplanted rice cultivars treated 2 days after transplanting. These compounds have the mechanism of action on the chlorophyll biosynthesis like protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitors.
Pre- and post-emergent control of Aneilema keisak was investigated in no-till paddy fields. In addition, a pot trial was conducted to determine use rates of the experimental post-emergent herbicide LGC40863. For pre-emergent control, butachlor(1,800g ai/ha), pretilachlor(600g ai/ha), pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron(300+18g ai/ha, respectively), thiobencarb plus bensulfuron(2,100+51g ai/ha, respectively), and molinate plus pyrazosulfuron(1,500+21g ai/ha, repectively) were treated at 20 days before seeding. Among the herbicides, molinate plus pyrazosulfuron was the least effective (23% control), while all other herbicides provided excellent(>95%) control of A. keisak. None of these herbicides caused rice phytotoxicity. However, rice yield in the plot treated with molinate plus pyrazosulfuron decreased about 50% due to poor A. keisak control. LGC40863 controlled A. keisak completely, by foliar application, across wide growth stages from the 5- to 15-leaf at 50g ai/ha in pot tests. In the field, treatment of LGC40863(30 to 50g ai/ha) provided >95% control of A. keisak when treated either at 15 days after transplanting or at non-productive tillering stage. Efficacy of 2,4-D and bentazon was insufficient when treated at non-productive tillering stage. These results suggest that, in no-till paddy fields, A. keisak is controlled by pre-emergent application of butachlor, pretilachlor, pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron, or thiobencarb plus bensulfuron, and by post-emergent application of LGC40863.
The antioxidant capacity of yield-type mulberry leaves and fruits (Morus alba L., M. bombycis Koidz, and M. Lhou (Ser). Koidz) collected from In-je, Won-ju and Yang-yang regions, Kang-won province, Korea, was investigated with minium L-100 device and ARAW-KIT (anti-radical ability of water-soluble substance), in comparison to the ascorbic acid. The results indicated that total antioxidant capacity of yield-type mulberry leaves was 2711.2 nmol (ascorbic acid equivalents). The highest stage of antioxidant capacity (3587.6 nmol) was opening stage of five leaves in spring. Especially, antioxidant capacity of mulberry leave collected from In-je region was high than that of other regions. No. 7 mulberry leave showed the strongest antioxidant capacity (6184.9 nmol) at opening stage of five leaves in spring. Also, fluit growing condition including fruit size and yield was good, too. Therefore, No. 7 mulberry three from In-je region, possessed not only high antioxidant capacity but also considerable fruit quality, was selected as potent resource for mulberry breeding and functional material development.
To estimate the suitable method of phosphorus application in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice, available phosphorus, appearance of algal water bloom, and rice yield were investigated in paddy soil of Honam area from 1994 to 1995. Available phosphorus content with different regions was the highest in the east-west inland region of Noryeong mountain range and the inland region of Honam area and it was the lowest in the Charyeong south plains region. Available phosphorus content was the highest in the alluvial plains. and it was the lowest in dilluvial terrace. Frations of phosphorus in Jeonbug series were high in the order of Ca-P, Fe-P, and Al-P, respectively. Algal water bloom occurred highly in 100% and 70% basal applications before seeding, and slightly in no-fertilizer and 100% application of 3-leaf stage in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice. Suitable amount of phosphorus application was 21kg/ha in the single cropping paddy field of Fluvio-marine plain, and rice yield was increased 6% at 50% basal application.
By treatment(dropping) of 0.1~0.4% colchicine solution on the sprouts of winter buds of hard wood cutting slips for 4~5 days, two lines of artificial autotetraploids from Yongchonppong and one line from Yeongbyonppong were bred and the important cultivative characteristics of those new lines were as follows. The greentip sprouting stage of the new bred lines in spring season is later than the parental varieties by two days, but growth speed of the new lines after sprouting was faster than that of the parental varieties reaching the same level development with the parental varieties at the fifth leaf sprouting stage to be mid varieties same as the origins. The leaf shape of the new bred lines was wide round and the petioloes were long and thick. The thickness of leaf was thicker than the parental varieties by 17-33% and single leaf weight was heavy. The leaf area weight increased by 21-31% and the content of chlorophyll was also higher by 11-33%. With all the characteristics, the new breds produced good quality of leaves. The length and number of branches were shorter and less, respectively, than the parental varieties, but the internode length was either same or longer than the parents. Looking at the characteristics, the constitution of shoots was slightly inferior to the parental varieties. The cold hardness expressed by the death top rate of Sawonppong 23 and Sawonppong 24 was same level as that of Yongchonppong, but Sawonppong 25 was stronger than Yeongbyonppong in it with a high infection rate of dwarf disease. The productivity was lower than the parental varieties, but young shoot rate to shoot and branch and the ratio of leaf to young shoot were higher than the parental varieties. The fertility of Sawonppong 23 and Sawonppong 24 was comparatively high with 62% of cross success, but that of Sawonppong 25 was low with 23.9% of cross success.
