This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of sampling and analytical methodology used for the measurement of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ambient air. VOCs were determined by the adsorbent tube sampling and automatic thermal desorption coupled with GC/MSD analysis. Target analytes were 33 compounds including major aromatic compounds such as BTEX, and halogenated compounds. The methodology was investigated with a wide range of different adsorbents which are commercially available and have been frequently adopted for the VOC measurement. A total of 10 adsorbents were tested in this study: 6 carbon-based adsorbents such as Carbotrap, Carbopack B, Carbosieve S-III, Carboxen 1000, Carbotrap C, Activated Charcoal; and 4 polymer-based adsorbents including Tenax, Porapak Q, Chromosorb 102, and Chromosorb 106. The sampling performance was evaluated with respect to the sampling capacity of VOCs with single-adsorbent and multiple-adsorbents methods for standard samples and field samples. As a result, the best adsorbents for single-adsorbent method in the sampling of toxic organic compounds (including benzene, toluene, xylenes etc.) appeared to be Carbotrap, Carbopack B and Tenax TA. On the other hand, Chromosorb 102, Chromosorb 106 and Porapak Q were found to be unsuitable adsorbents for VOC measurement based on thermal desorption method. Multi-adsorbent packings were evaluated with 4 carbon-based adsorbents, which classified by 3 combination sets of double adsorbents and 2 combination sets of triple adsorbents. The results indicated that the most suitable combination for toixc VOC measurements is Carbotrap C with Carbotrap. Multi-sorbents tubes packed with a strong adsorbent such as Carbosieve S-III or Carboxen 1000 were found to be relatively unsuitable for several compounds, not only owing to the effect of migration of adsorbed compounds from weaker adsorbent to stronger adsorbent, but to hydrophobic nature of the adsorbents. Therefore, it should be addressed that selection of a proper adsorbent (or combination of multi sorbents) is extremely important to obtain reliable data for the concentrations of toxic VOCs in indoor and outdoor environments.

In this study, a thermal behavior of $PrCl_3$ as one of the lanthanide chlorides in LiCl-KCl molten salts was investigated in an oxidizing condition. First, a thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) of $PrCl_3$ was carried out by an injection of $O_2$ gas. Based on the results, an oxidation of $PrCl_3$ in the molten salts was performed by sparging $O_2$ gas with changing temperatures. According to the TGA data of $PrCl_3$, a dissociation of $PrCl_3$ occurred rapidly by about $380^{\circ}C$ and a conversion of $PrCl_3$ to $PrCl_3$ was completed at about $600^{\circ}C$. The thermal behavior of $PrCl_3$ in LiCl-KCl molten salts by sparging $O_2$ gas was similar to that of $PrCl_3$ in the TGA test, and PrOCl as a insoluble compound in the molten salts was precipitated into the bottom of the molten salts. A conversion of $PrCl_3$ to PrOCl in the molten salts occurred actively at a higher temperature than $650^{\circ}C$. And it would be possible to estimate a conversion status of $PrCl_3$ to PrOCl by measuring a $Cl_2$ concentration in a flue gas generated from an oxidation test of $PrCl_3$ in LiCl-KCl molten salts.

Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) has been intensively studied for the treatment of a plethora of pollutants through reductive reaction, however, the nano size should be of concern when nZVI is considered for water treatment, due to difficulties in recovery. The loss of nZVI causes not only economical loss, but also potential risk to human health and environment. Thus, the immobilization onto coarse or structured support is essential. In this study, two representative processes for nZVI immobilization on granular activated carbon (GAC) were evaluated, and optimized conditions for synthesizing Fe/GAC composite were suggested. Both total iron content and $Fe_0$ content can be significantly affected by preparation processes, therefore, it was important to avoid oxidation during preparation to achieve higher reduction capacity. Synthesis conditions such as reduction time and existence of intermediate drying step were investigated to improve $Fe_0$ content of Fe/GAC composites. The optimal condition was two hours of $NaBH_4$ reduction without intermediate drying process. The prepared Fe/GAC composite showed synergistic effect of the adsorption capability of the GAC and the degradation capability of the nZVI, which make this composite a very effective material for environmental remediation.
Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have advantages to reduce the processing time and mineralize contaminants dissolved in groundwater. Recently, remediation techniques for organic contamination in groundwater have been studied, and technology using $UV/H_2O_2$ is generally accepted as one of the most powerful and reliable alternative for the remediation of groundwater contamination. In this study, $UV/H_2O_2$ technology, which generates hydroxyl radical ($\cdot$ OH) as known for strong non-selective oxidant, was used to degrade chlorinated solvents (TCE and PCE), and it was expanded to apply continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system (i.e. combinations of three CSTR). The tested parameters for CSTR system were retention time and groundwater/$H_2O_2$ injection volume ratio. To find optimum parameters for CSTR system, various retention time (6 min ~ 90 min) and groundwater/$H_2O_2$ injection volume ratio (5/1 ~ 119/1) were tested. Other conditions for CSTR were adapted from the batch test results, which concentration of $H_2O_2$ and UV dose were 29.4 mM (0.1%) and 4.3 kWh/L, respectively. Based on the experimental results, the optimum parameters for CSTR system were 20 min for retention time and 119/1 for groundwater/$H_2O_2$ injection volume ratio. Applying these optimum conditions, chlorinated solvents (TCE and PCE) were removed at 99.9% and 99.6%. Moreover, the effluent concentrations of TCE and PCE are 0.036 mg/L and 0.087 mg/L, respectively, which are satisfied the regulatory level (TCE 0.3 mg/L, PCE 0.1 mg/L). Consequently, the CSTR system using $UV/H_2O_2$ technology can achieve high removal efficiency in the event of treatment of groundwater contaminated by chlorinated solvents (TCE and PCE).
The influence of temperature on the treatment efficiency of chlorinated organic substances contained in groundwater by permeable reactive barrier which is composed of $Fe^{\circ}$ has been investigated by constructing the Pourbaix diagrams for Fe-$H_2O$ system at different temperatures based on thermodynamic estimation. In aerobic condition, the equilibrium potentials for $Fe^{\circ}/Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ were observed to increase, therefore, the dechlorination reaction for organic pollutants by $Fe^{\circ}$ was considered to decline with temperature due to the diminished oxidation of reactive barrier. The result for the variations of the ionization fraction of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ ion in the pH range of 0 ~ 2.5 obtained by employing Visual MINTEQ program showed that the ionization fraction of $Fe^{2+}$ increased with pH, however, that of $Fe^{3+}$ decreased symmetrically and the extent of the variation of ionization fraction for both ions was raised as temperature rises. The equilibrium pH for $Fe^{3+}/Fe(OH)_3$ was examined to decrease with temperature so that the treatment efficiency of chlorinated organic substance was expected to decrease with temperature due to the enhanced formation of passivating film in aerobic condition. The change of the reactivity of a specific chemical species with temperature was defined quantitatively based on the area of its stable region in Pourbaix diagram and depending on this the reactivity of $Fe^{3+}$ was shown to decrease with temperature, however, that of $Fe(OH)_3$ was decreased monotonously as temperature is raised for $Fe^{3+}/Fe(OH)_3$ equilibrium system. In anaerobic condition, the equilibrium potential for $Fe^{\circ}/Fe^{2+}$ was observed to rise and the equilibrium pH for $Fe^{2+}/Fe(OH)_2$ were examined to decrease as temperature increases, therefore, similar to that for aerobic condition the efficiency of the dechlorination reaction for organic substances was considered to be diminished when temperature rises because of the reduced oxidation of $Fe^{\circ}$ and increased formation of $Fe(OH)_2$ passivating film.
There are several kinds of hazardous materials in incinerator flue gas, such as particulate matter, acid gas, heavy metal, dioxin, etc. The activated carbon adsorption is considered as one of the methods removing dioxin from flue gas. Without any additional equipment and facilities, the activated carbon was mixed with lime and sprayed in the semi-drying reactor of an incinerator and filtered in the bag filter, and its efficiency of removing hazardous organic material was investigated. 1,2-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) was used as a precursor material of dioxin and the effects of the activated carbon amount, the operating temperature of the reactor, and the atomizer r.p.m were measured and analyzed. Experimental results showed that the optimum outlet temperature of the reactor was $145^{\circ}C$ considering the performance of the bag filter, and the adsorption performance improved with the increase of the atomizer r.p.m. Also the performance of removing o-DCB in the bag filter is higher than of the semi-drying reactor.
Due to the toxicity of dioxin in the incinerator flue gas, it becomes a severe social problem. Activated carbon adsorption process is one of the methods for removing dioxin in the flue gas and was investigated its performance for removing hazardous organic compounds. Since dioxin is very hazardous material, 1,2-dichlorobenzene(o-DCB), one of the precursor material of dioxin, was used as adsorbate. The effects of air flow rate, pressure drop in the bag filter, operation temperature of bag filter, and kinds of adsorbents on the removal of o-DCB were measured and analysed. Experimental results showed that the operating temperature was recommended within the range of $140{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ considering the operating condition of incinerator. Also it was necessary to maintain the pressure drop of bag filter $120mmH_2O$ for enhancing the adsorption at the surface layer of activated carbon formed on the bag filter. The use of mixture of same amount of activated carbon and diatomite showed more than 90% removal of o-DCB and also reduced the consumption of activated carbon.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) occur in indoor and outdoor industrial and urban areas and cause environmental problems. Malodorous VOCs, along with aesthetic discomfort, can have a serious effect on the human body. Compared with the existing method of reducing malodorous VOCs, a wet scrubbing method using an electrolytic oxidant has the advantage of reducing pollutants and regenerating oxidants. This study investigated the optimal conditions for producing OCl-, a chlorine-oxidant. Experiments were conducted by changing the type of anode and cathode electrode, the type of electrolyte, the concentration of electrolytes, and the current density. With Ti/IrO2 as the anode electrode and Ti as the cathode electrode, OClproduction was highest and most stable. Although OCl- production was similar with the use of KCl or NaCl, NaCl is preferable because it is cheap and easy to obtain. The effect of NaCl concentration and current density was examined, and the OCl- production rate and concentration were highest at 0.75 M NaCl and 0.03 A cm-2. However, considering the cost of electric power, OCl- production under the conditions of 1.00 M NaCl and 0.01 A cm-2 was most effective among the conditions examined. It is desirable to produce OCl- by adjusting the current density in accordance with the concentration and characteristics of pollutants.
Once a site is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), serious environmental and human health risks are inevitable. Therefore, innovative but economical in situ remediation technologies must be immediately applied to the contaminated site. Recently, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nano-ZVI) particles have successfully been applied for the dechlorination of various chlorinated organic compounds like TCE, PCE and DDT, and they are considered to be environmentally safe due to the high abundance of iron in the earth's crust. Nano-ZVIs are much more reactive than granular ones, but tend to agglomerate due to their high surface energy and magnetic properties. In order to prevent them from being agglomerated toward larger particles, TiO2 was used as a support to immobilize the nano-ZVI particles as much as possible. 10wt% ZVI/TiO2 was prepared by adding NaBH4 slowly into an FeSO4/TiO2 aqueous slurry. In spite of their non-uniformity in size, the nano-ZVI particles were quite successfully dispersed onto the exterior surface of a non-porous TiO2 powder. The ZVI/TiO2 was then employed to degrade Aroclor 1242, a kind of PCBs standard, in spiked soil, and its reactivity towards the degradation of Aroclor 1242 was investigated. The fabricated ZVI/TiO2 degraded Aroclor 1242 in soil quite effectively, but the creation of remaining dechlorinated compounds, possibly high molecular weight hydrocarbons, in the soil was unavoidable.
