  • The purpose of this study is to convert hydrophobic dyestuff to hydrophilic dyestuff by reacting cationic collector with anionic dyestuff and reaction anionic collector with cationic dyestuff. The removal of colors from aqueous solutions and/or dispersions has been studied by dispersed-air flotation in a batch column. In this studies used generated micro bubble by ceramic gas diffuser having micro pore size for air flotation process. In this study, a ceramic gas diffuser with micro pore size was used to generate micro bubbles for the air flotation process. Two colours were used for the experiments: Basic Yellow 1 (cationic dyestuff) and Direct Orange 10 (anionic dyestuff). All two were effectively removed by flotation within 8 mins. Sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium oleate (an anionic collector), and amines (a cationic collector) were found to be effective as collectors in the removal of color, which was found to be related to the pH of the solution and the amount of collector added to it, with high collector dosages causing the process to become pH-independent.

  • The results for decolorization of various dyes by Geotrichum candidum (KCTC 6195) showed that optimal initial pH, temperature and glucose concentration were 6, $30^{\circ}C$, and 30g/L. Light had no effect on the cell growth and decolorization efficiency. All the dyes - dispersive dyes, acid dyes and reactive dyes - used on the solid medium were also decolorized in a liquid medium, although the decolorizing rates varies depending on the dye structure. An energy source was essential for cell growth or decolorization because textile dyes did not support growth. The percentage of decolorization of Acid orange 10 was shown to be 91% for initial conc. 100ppm and 84% for initial conc. 500ppm. The biomass could adsorb the dyes such as Acid red 1;19.8%, Acid red 88; 73%, Acid orange 10; 12.1% Reactive blue 19; 14.6%. The dye removal was due to the sorption of dye to the fungal biomass as well as some extracellular enzymes. Color removal was enhanced up to 97% within 3 days by the addition of glucose after 2 days incubation.

  • As waste-water disposal plants and oxidative biodegradation for the removal of waste polyaromatic dyes are proved to be ineffective due to the chemical stability of dyes, we studied various strains of mushroom fungi for the removal of these dyes. 100 fungi were isolated from the mushroom samples of 230 species collected in Korea. The growth medium containing a dye (Bromophenol Blue, Congo Red, or Methylene Blue) was inoculated to 10% and incubated for 7 days without shaking. The six strains which removed dyes effectively were selected for further studies with respect to removal of polycyclic aromatic dyes. For all strains, the rate of decoloration of dyes was increasing with Methylene Blue, Bromophenol Blue and Congo Red. The rate of decoloration was higher with stationary culture than with shaking culture. Adsorption of the dyes was the highest with Congo Red.

  • red 1 and acid blue 92, anionic dyes, were removed from synthetic wastewater by the surfactant-modified clay minerals. Two different clays, such as Korean clay(M78) and Japanese clay(KJ) were treated with three different sulfactants, CTMA, DSDMA and TMSA. The surfactant-modified clay minerals such as M-1(CTMA), M-3(TMSA), KJ-1(CTMA) and KJ-3(TMSA), showed high removal efficiencies with dyes, while M-2(DSDMA) and KJ-2(DSDMA) could adsorb both dyes with relatively low efficiencies. Furthermore, almost 100% absorption of both dyes onto M-1(CTMA) and KJ-3(TMSA) revealed the possibility that these materials can be used for the removal of hazardous organic dyes from wastewater.

  • This study is concerned with the treatment of dye wastewater by carrier meditated emulsion liquid membrane. Optimum conditions for the removal of anionic dye and cationic dye by the emulsion liquid membrane(ELM) containing Aliquat 336 or D2EHPA were obtained in the batch operation, an actual dye wastewater was tested under these conditions. Dye reagents used were Sirius Red(Direct dye), Reactofix Supra Blue(Reactive dye), and Apollo Blue(Basic dye). The experimental variables were surfactant(Span 80) and carrier(Aliquat 336 or D2EHPA) concentration in the membrane phase, the counter ion($Na_2SO_4$) concentration in the internal phase and the amount of emulsion. Extraction equilibrium arrived within 5 minutes after starting reaction and more than 95% of dye ion could be removed. The carrier concentration in the membrane phase was the most crucial for the removal efficiency, but other variables effected to the reaction time more than the removal efficiency. The dye wastewater was treated under the optimum conditions in two steps. The absorbance at 550nm of wastewater was decreased 0.53 to below 0.03 after 10 minutes treatment.

  • Due to the low biodegradability of dyes, conventional biological wastewater treatment systems are inefficient in treating dye wastewater. Various white-rot fungi were investigated for the decolorization of six industrial dyes (reactive blue 5, reactive blue 16, reactive black 5, acid black 52, reactive orange 16, and acid violet 43). Among ten fungi, T. versicolor KCTC 16781 was selected as a testing strain because this had the best performance of decolorization for six dyes from the results of the solid culture experiments. In liquid culture medium, T. versicolor KCTC 16781 decolorized over 96% of six dyes for 48 hrs. Laccase started to produce in the early stage of the culture, and showed the highest peak value of 2.3 U/mL in 24 hrs. Enzyme activity remained constant until the end of culture. Fungal decolorization is a promising alternative to replace or supplement present treatment process.

  • New separation process was developed for the preparation of storage-stable liquid dyes. The extent of aggregation of dye molecules was measured with respect to storage time of liquid dyes under different salt environments. Hollow-fiber membranes were modified by immobilization of inorganic crystals onto the surface of membrane. Using surface-treated membranes, counter diffusion technology was introduced to selectively remove salts from dye solution. The separation factors were 10-700, and the loss of dye molecules was less than 0.4 %. Membrane permeabilities for sodium ions($U_{M,Na}$) and dye molecules($U_{M,Dye}$) were found to be 2.75 and $0.72l/m^2/hr$, respectively, in the case of surface-treated membranes. The effects of various operating parameters on desalting efficiency were also investigated.

  • Studies were carried out on the selective removal of inorganic salts such as NaCl and $Na_2SO_4$ from dye solution, using counter diffusion-reverse osmosis and nanofiltration, respectivey. For the dye solution used in the experiments, 1 to 30% of salts were removed by counter diffusion while the loss of dye molecules was less than 0.3%. The separation factors by one pass operation were 10-500 according to ionic species. In five successive operations, removals of anion($Cl^-$) increased but those of cation($Na^+$) decreased due to the Donnan effect. Effects of feed flow rate on removal efficiencies of various ions were also observed at constant flow rate of stripping water. Reverse osmosis of desalted dye solution by counter diffusion was conducted to prepare highly concentrated liquid dyes. The rejection efficiency of dye molecules was greater than 99%. For the rejection efficiency of chloride ion, experimental values were compared with theoretical ones based on solution-diffusion model. Two stage diafiltration was performed in nanofiltration. The rejection efficiency of chloride ion was continuously decreased due to the Donnan dialysis and even negative rejection was observed. The Donnan effect was more pronounced in the second diafiltration.

  • For decolorization of various reactive dyes, 13 species of microbes were isolated from dyeing wastewater collected from Banweol industrial complex, Korea. Two strains among them showed good ability for removing celerity during the decolorization test with 5 different reactive dyes. And the optimal growth conditions were pH 7, 35$^{\circ}C$, yeast extract as nitrogen source, glucose as carbon source, and facultative anaerobic condition. As results, when Reactive Red 180 was used, 89 and 87% of decolorization efficiency were able to be obtained by using Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus cereus, respectively. Especially, Bacillus cereus showed good ability for decolorization of Reactive Blue 21, and the ratio was 76% Finally, it was considered that these two strains isolated in this study will be showed high decolorization ability to treat dyeing wastewater.
