  • The characteristics of evaporation heat transfer for the utilization of LNG cold energy was investigated experimentally using liquified nitrogen and a solution of ethylene-glycol and water under horizontal two-phase conditions in the small-scale equipment of a cryogenic heat exchange system. The inner tubes in the double pipe heat exchanger with 8 mm and 15 mm inner diameter and 6 m length were adopted as a smooth test tubes and enhanced tubes by means of wire-coil inserts. Heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt number for the test tube were calculated from measurements of temperatures, flowrates and pressures. The correlations in a power-law relationship of the Nusselt number, the Reynolds number and Prandtl number for heat transfer were proposed which can be available for design of cryogenic heat exchangers. The correlations showed heat transfer coefficients for the wire-coil inserts were much higher than those for the smooth tubes, increased by more than 2.5 ${\~}$ 5.5 times depending upon the equivalent Reynolds number. Form and length of cryogenic double pipe heat exchanger were proposed for applicable to the utilization of LNG cold energy.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of R-134a were investigated in titanium plain and low finned tubes. The diameter of test tube was 15.88 mm and the fin density was 33 fpi. Tests were conducted at saturation temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. Heat fluxes varied from 5000 W/$m^2$ to 50,000 W/$m^2$ based on surface area of the plain tube. The pool boiling heat transfer coefficients of the titanium horizontal plain tube are lower than those of the copper plain tube by $8.2\%$. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of the low finned tube are averagely higher than those of the plain tubes by $34\%$. The average deviation of the Slipcevic correlation from the present data for the low finned tube is $20\%$.

  • The various sizes of wires are attached to the outside of the inner tube in a double pipe heat exchanger to enhance the thermal performance. The diameters of the wires range from 0.5mm to 1.6mm while the pitches are chosen between 5mm and 50mm. Experiments have been performed with the range of Reynolds numbers from 15000 to 30000 in annular space where air flows. The friction factors are increased by 1.5 to 4.5 times depending on the sizes and the pitches of the wires. However, the Nusselt numbers are increased by the factors of 1.8 to 2.8 within this experimental range. It is suggested that there should be an optimum configuration rendered when the weighting values of the heat transfer promotion and the pumping power are given.

  • The evaporating heat transfer experiments with refrigerant HCFC 22 are performed for performance evaluation using 4 and 6 kinds of microfin tubes with outer diameter of 9.52mm and 7.0mm, respectively. Used microfin tubes have different shape and number of fins with each other, The experimental results are represented with effects of quality, mass flux and EPR. The evaporating heat transfer characteristics are represented by the existence of not only heat transfer area and turbulence promotion effect but also additional other enhancement mechanism, which are the overflow of the refrigerant over the microfin and microfin arrangement. Microfin tubes having a shape which can give much overflow over the microfin show large evaporating heat transfer coefficients. The effect of refrigerant overflow is much severe in evaporation than condensation. The effect of microfin arrangement is related to overflow effect of the refrigerant over the microfin.

  • To examine the enhancement mechanism of condensing heat transfer through microfin tube, the condensation experiments with refrigerant HCFC 22 are performed using 4 and 6 kinds of microfin tubes with outer diameter of 9.52mm and 7.0mm, respectively. Used microfin tubes have different shape and number of fins with each other The main heat transfer enhancement mechanism is known to be the enlargement of heat transfer area and turbulence promotion. Together with these main factors, we can find other enhancement factors by the experimental data, which are the overflow of the refrigerant over the microfin and microfin arrangement. The overflow of the refrigerant over the microfin can be analyzed by the geometric shape of the microfin. Microfin tubes having a shape which can give much overflow over the microfin show large condensing heat transfer coefficients. The effect of microfin arrangement is related to the heat transfer resistance of liquid film of refrigerant. The condensing heat transfer coefficients are high for the microfin tube with even distribution of liquid film.

  • A significant amount of studies were performed on evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop in microfin tubes. Most studies, however, focused on the refrigerants used in air-conditioners or heat pumps, and very limited information is available on R-404A, which is used in low temperature refrigeration. In this study, the evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R-404A in a 9.5 mm O.D. microfin tube were investigated for the mass flux range from $80kg/m^2s$ and $200kg/m^2s$. A smooth tube of the same outer dimeter was also tested for comparison. The results showed that the heat transfer enhancement ratio of the microfin tube increased with increasing mass flux and the heat flux decreased. The relative contribution of the convective heat transfer and the heat flux on total heat transfer was attributed to the observed trend. The pressure drops of the microfin tube were slightly (maximum 28%) larger than those of the smooth tube. Existing correlations do not adequately predict the measured heat transfer coefficients of pressure drops, probably due to the test range of the present study, which is outside of the existing correlations.

  • Condensation heat transfer on a single horizontal tube with electric fields (Electro-Hydro-Dynamics, (EHD)) has been studied experimentally. Results are presented for EHD enhanced condensation of R-113 on a single horizontal tube using several electrode geometries. Especially, its attention was focused on the effects of electrode geometry, electric field strength and the gap of the electrode. In this study, single wire, helical, ring and mesh electrode were used. The range of the imposed voltage was 0~20 kV. As the voltage was increased the surface of liquid became an unstable wave, stream jet, liquid column and then liquid extraction in sequence. Among the various kinds of electrodes, the single wire electrode is suitable for practical application.

  • Heat transfer coefficients of enhanced tubes in a flooded evaporator are measured through Wilson Plot method. And the correlations are proposed to design a flooded evaporators. Overall heat transfer coefficients are composed of the heat transfer coefficients both inside and outside tubes. Usually the experiments have been conducted separately. But there have been many difficulties like setting up the equipments and measuring the wall temperature. Wilson Plot method makes it possible to measure the separated transfer coefficients at the same equipment through experimental skills. So the cost and time can be reduced. And the results are reliable enough to use for design. Heat transfer coefficients inside the tube were able to be correlated uniquely in spite of various outside conditions. Boiling heat transfer of R134a is more dependent on the saturation temperature and much higher than that of R123.

  • In this study, heat transfer and friction characteristics of compound enhanced fin-and-tube heat exchangers were experimentally investigated. Louver-finned heat exchangers were also tested for comparison purpose. The effect of fin pitch on j and f factor was negligible. The j factor decreased as number of tube row increased. However, f factor was independent of number of tube row. Louver fin samples yielded higher j and f factors than compound enhanced fin samples. For one row, j and f factors of louver fin were 23% and 27% higher than those of compound enhanced fin. For two row, those were 11% and 8%, and for three row, those were 10% and 9%. However, heat transfer capacities at the same pressure drop of the compound enhanced fins were 6.4% for one row, 11.1% for two row and 13.6% for three row larger than those of louver fins, Existing louver fin correlation overpredicted the present j factors and underpredicted the present f factors.

  • An experiment was carried out to evaluate the heat transfer and pressure drop performances of the smooth tube and two augmented tubes using R-113 under horizontal condensation condition. The augmented tubes are a spirally-twisted tube and an internally-finned tube. The test tube is 13.88 mm in diameter and 3.2 m long. Five different inlet pressure of 0.13, 0.16, 0.18, 0.21 and 0.23 MPa were employed and the mass flux was varied from 80 to 265 $kg/m^{2}s.$ The results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficient for the spirally-twisted tube and internally-finned tube were enhanced by 30-85% and 130-180%, respectively, over that for the smooth tube. The increase in total pressure drop for the spirally-twisted tube and internally-finned tube were reached up to 250-350% and 1100-1600%, respectively, over that for the smooth tube. Correlations were proposed for predicting the condensation heat transfer coefficient for the smooth tube and two augmented tubes.
