  • This paper presents the effects of fire-resistant materials on the temperature and vertical deflection of a composite beam exposed to fire through nonlinear thermo-mechanical analysis. The fire was modeled using the standard fire curve proposed in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E119. Fire-resistant materials were modeled by reducing the heat transfer coefficient from the air layer to the beam. The temperature and vertical deflection of the uncoated composite beam were measured using a laboratory fire test, and the results of the structural fire analysis were verified through comparison with experimental results. By introducing the fire-resistance effect, the reduction in the temperature and deflection of the beam for the ASTM E119 standard fire can be reasonably estimated. Based on a case study of the heat transfer coefficient, the fire-resistant effect on the thermo-mechanical response of a composite beam in the event of a fire is presented.

  • This study concerns the performance of boiling heat transfer in inclined thermosyphons with internal grooves. A study was carried out with the performance of the heat transfer of the inclined thermosyphon having 60 internal grooves in which boiling and condensation occur. A plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphon is also tested for comparison. Distilled water, methanol and ethanol have been used as the working fluid. The inclination angle, three working fluids, heat flux and the boiling heat transfer coefficient at the evaporator zone are estimated from the experimental results. The experimental results have been assessed and compared with existing correlations. Imura's and Kusuda's correlation for boiling showed in good agreement with experimental results within ${\pm}20%$ in plain thermosyphon. The high heat transfer coefficient was found between $25^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ of inclination angle for water and between $20^{\circ}$ and $25^{\circ}$ for methanol and ethanol. The relatively high rates of heat transfer have been achieved in the thermosyphon with internal micro grooves.

  • This paper is concerned with protecting piezoelectric transducers used in an ultrasonic flowmeter from the high temperature of hot fluid in a pipe by using a waveguide and with improving the propagation of ultrasonic longitudinal vibration in the waveguide. Waveguide material has been chosen for efficient insulation of heat transferred in the waveguide, and the minimum length of the waveguide for protecting piezoelectric transducer has been estimated. Forced response of the longitudinal vibration in a uniform circular rod has been obtained and the length of the waveguide has been selected for maximum amplitude. Longitudinal vibration response of a conically-tapered rod excited at a natural frequency has been obtained to confirm that wave motion is amplified as the cross-sectional size of the waveguide decreases along the axial direction. The fact that dispersion of a pulse wave in a waveguide is reduced as the cross-sectional radius is decreased has been examined theoretically and confirmed experimentally by using a single-rod waveguide. A bundle-type waveguide has proven to be a practical one through the evaluation of the wave propagation performance.

  • Knowledge of ground thermal properties is most important for the proper design of BHE(borehole heat exchanger) systems. The configure type, pipe size and thermal performance of the BHE is highly dependent on the ground source heatpump system-efficiency and instruction cost. Thermal response tests with mobile measurement devices were developed primarily for in-situ determination of design data for Standing Column Well apply. The main purpose has been to determine in-situ values of effective ground thermal conductivity and thermal resistance, including the effect of ground-water flow and natural convection in the boreholes. The test rig is set up on a some trailer, and contains a sub-circulation pump, a boiler, temperature sensors, flow meter and a data logger for recording the temperature and circulation fluid flow data. A constant heating power is injected into the SCW through the test rig and the resulting temperature change in the SCW is recorded. The recorded temperature data are analysed with a line-source model, which gives the effective in-situ values of rock thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of SCW.

  • Knowledge of ground thermal properties is most important for the proper design of large BHE(borehole heat exchanger) systems. Thermal response tests with mobile measurement devices were first introduced in Sweden and USA in 1995. Thermal response tests have so far been used primarily for in insitu determination of design data for BHE systems, but also for evaluation of grout material, heat exchanger types and ground water effects. The main purpose has been to determine insitu values of effective ground thermal conductivity, including the effect of ground-water flow and natural convection in the boreholes. Test rig is set up on a small trailer, and contains a circulation pump, a heater, temperature sensors and a data logger for recording the temperature data. A constant heat power is injected into the borehole through the pipe system of test rig and the resulting temperature change in the borehole is recorded. The recorded temperature data are analysed with a line-source model, which gives the effective insitu values of rock thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance.

  • This paper presents a design method for the horizontal straight ground heat exchanger (GHE) based on the Kavanaugh design method. In order to examine suitability of the suggested design method, a horizontal line type GHE was installed in a steel box of which the size was $5m{\times}1m{\times}1m$ filled with dried Joomunjin standard, and a thermal response test (TRT) was conducted for 21 hours. A numerical analysis was performed for a simulation of a peak month operation and for its verification by finite element method (FEM). According to the simulation results, it was concluded that the suggested design method for a horizontal straight GHE is reliable for the estimation of a design length.

  • The heat exchange between the Borehole Heat Exchanger(BHE) and the surrounding ground depends directly on ground thermal conductivity k at the certain site. The k is thus a key parameter in designing BHE and coupled geothermal heat pump systems. Currently, although a thermal hydraulic Response Test(TRT) is mostly used in practice, the thermal hydraulic TRT needs additional power and is generally time-consuming. A new, simple wireless probe for hi-speed k determination was introduced in this paper. This technique using a wireless probe is less time-consuming and requires no external source of energy for measurement and predicts local thermal properties by measuring soil temperatures along the depth. Measured temperature data along the depth was analyzed. As a result, the electronic wireless probe can replace the conventional hydraulic TRT method after carrying out the additional research on a lot of local heat flow, etc.

  • An inverted index structure is widely used for efficient string similarity search. One of the main requirements of similarity search is a fast response time; to this end, most techniques use an in-memory index structure. Since the size of an inverted index structure usually very large, however, it is not practical to assume that an index structure will fit into the main memory. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel technique that reduces the size of an inverted index. In order to reduce the size of an index, the proposed technique rearranges data strings so that the data strings containing the same q-grams can be placed close to one other. Then, the technique encodes those multiple strings into a range. Through an experimental study using real data sets, we show that our technique significantly reduces the size of an inverted index without sacrificing query processing time.

  • The present study on nitrogen-diluted non-premixed counterflow flames with finite burner diameters experimentally investigates the important role of the outer edge flame in flame extinction. Flame stability diagrams mapping the flame extinction response of nitrogen-diluted non-premixed counterflow flames to varying global strain rates in terms of the burner diameter, burner gap, and velocity ratio are explored. There exists a critical nitrogen mole fraction beyond which the flame cannot be sustained, and also the curves of the critical nitrogen mole fraction versus the global strain rate have C-shapes in terms of burner diameter, burner gap, and velocity ratio. In flames with sufficiently high strain rates, the curves of the critical nitrogen mole fractions versus global strain rate collapse into one curve, and the flames can have the 1-D flame response of typical diffusion flames. Three flame extinction modes are identified: flame extinctions through the shrinkage of the outer edge flame with and without an oscillation of the outer edge flame prior to the extinction and flame extinction through a flame hole at the flame center. The measured flame surface temperature and a numerical evaluation of the fractional contribution of each term in the energy equation show that the radial conductive heat loss at the flame edge destabilizes the outer edge flame, and the conductive and convection heat addition to the outer edge from the trailing diffusion flame stabilizes the outer edge flame. The radial conductive heat loss at the flame edge is the dominant extinction mechanism acting through the shrinkage of the outer edge flame.
