  • The two dissociation constants of three amino acid, glycine, alanine, and tryptophan were measured by the conductometric method in the temperature from 15 to 35$^{\circ}$C and pressure up to 2,500bar in aqueous solution. The both dissociation constants were increased as the temperature increased but the pressure effect were not same as the temperature effect. The first constants were increased as the pressure increased but second constants were decreased except tryptophan. The characteristic properties of these amino acids were discussed from the thermodynamic properties of the dissociation reaction. The substituted effects of the reaction were deduced from Hammett reaction and substituted constants which were calculated from the dissociation constants.

  • The dissociation constants of ${\beta}$-alanine and ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid were measured in the temperature range from 20 to $40^{\circ}C$ and pressure up to 2,500 bar by conductometric method. The both dissociation constants of respective amino acid increase with temperature increase but pressure effect is not same as the temperature. The $K_1$ increases as pressure increases but $K_2$ decreases. The properties of these amino acids were discussed in terms of the thermodynamic properties of the dissociation reaction. A relationship between the dissociation constants and the distance between substituted groups of amino acid was discussed. The substituted effects of the reaction were deduced from Hammett reaction and substituted constants which were calculated from the measured dissociation constants.

공기조화용 자기냉동기의 연구 동향

  • 자성재료에 자기장을 걸어주변 가열되고 자기장을 제거하면 냉각되는 성질이 있는데, 이를 자기열량효과(magnetocaloric effect)라고 하며, 이것을 이용해서 저온을 생성시키는 방법을 자기냉동(magnetic refrigeration)이라고 한다. 큐리 온도(Curie temperature) 부근의 강자성체에 자 기장이 가해지면 전자례도내에서 쌍을 이루지 않은 전자들의 자기모벤트들이 자기장에 평행 하게 배열되는데, 이로 인해 열역학적 무질서의 척도인 엔트로피는 낮아지고 이러한 손실을 보상하기 위해 재료의 온도가 올라가게 된다.반대로 자기장이 제거되면 자기모벤트가 본래의 무질서한 상태로 돌아오며, 엔트로피가 증가하 고 재료의 온도는 떨어지게 되는 것이다. 역사적으로 보면 1881년에 Warburg가 큐리온도 부근의 철에서 자기열량효과를 처음 발견하였으며. 1926년과 1927년에 Debye와 Giauque가 각각 단열소자볍 (adiabatic demagnetization)을 제안함으로써 실용화되기 시작하여 주로 극저온을 얻는 방법으로 이용되어 왔다. 1950년도 이전의 연구는 절대온도 영도(OK)에 도달하고 자 하는 순수과학적인 노력으로서 개방사이클(open cycle)을 이용한 단열냉각 방식을 추구하 였으나, 1950년 이후부터는 공학적인 응용을 목적으로 밀폐사이클(closed cycle)을 형성하는 자기냉동기에 관한 연구가 진행되었다. 1976년에 Brown은 희토류(rare earth) 금속인 가돌리늄(Gd)을 사용하여 유체(물 80%와 에틸 알코올 20%)를 재생시킴으로써 상온에서 작동 하는 자기냉동기를 보고한 바 있다. 그는 7 T의 큰 자장을 이용하였으며, 고온부와 저온부의 온도는 각각 $46^{\circ}C와\;-1^{\circ}C로서\;47^{\circ}C$의 온도간격을 얻었다. 자기냉동에 있어서의 또 하나의 중요한 진전은 1978년과 1982년에 Steyert와 Barclay에 의해서 능동자기재생기(active magnetic r regenerator)의 개념이 소개되고 개발된 것으로, 이는 자성재료가 냉매로서 뿐만 아니라 열전달 유체의 재생기로도 사용되는 방식이다. 이상과 같은 자기냉동기술의 발달에 이어서 1997년에 미국의 Astronautics사(Wisconsin주 Madison시 소재)와 Ames 연구소(Iowa주 Ames 시 소재)의 공동연구팀이 발표한 두 가지의 새로운 진전으로 인해 공기조화 및 냉동분야에 적용할 수 있는 자기냉동기의 실용화 가능성이 한층 높아졌다. 이들의 연구결과는 (1) 자기냉동이 실온에서도 실현 가능한 기술이며 증기압 축식 냉동에 필적할 만하다는 것을 보인 것과 (2) 이미 알려져 있던 자기냉동재료보다 자기 열량효과가 훨씬 큰 새로운 재료를 발견한 것이다. 이로써 자기냉동에 대한 관심과 기대가 한결 커지고 있다. 본 원고에서는 자기냉동의 원리가 되는 자기열량효과와 이를 이용한 자기냉동의 방법 그리고 최근에 이루어진 새로운 진전에 대해 소개하고 공기조화 및 냉동분야에의 적용 가능성을 전망해 보고자 한다.

Pressure Effect on the Dissociation Reactions of Some Weak Acids (약산의 해리반응에 미치는 압력의 영향)

  • The dissociation constants of anilinium ion, o-toluidinium ion, phenol and o-chlorophenol were measured spectroscopically in aqueous solution over the temperature range of 10∼40$^{\circ}C$ and at the pressures up to 2,000 bars. The effects of temperature and pressure on the dissociation of the phenols are the same as those of the ordinary weak acids. Meanwhile the dissociation constants of anilinium ions are increased with temperature raising and decreased with pressure elevation. The effects of pressure on the constants can be explained by taking account of change of charge during dissociation reaction; there are increase in charge in the dissociation of phenols but anilinium ions are not. Several thermodynamic properties, ${\Delta}H^{circ}$,${\Delta}G^{circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{circ}$,${\Delta}V^{circ}$ and ${\beta}$ are calculated from those constants, and the dissociation reactions are discussed by them.

  • The determination of rate limiting step in the metabolic process is of great importance to understand the metabolic properties. In this paper the authors propose a modified enzymatic method instead of thermodynamic method. This method is based on the assumption that the over-all rate increment would be larger than by any other steps to which the individual enzyme are added respectively, provided that the enzyme participated in the rate limiting step is added to the reactions composed of n steps of metabolic process with which n kind of enymes are concerned. The present paper deals with analysis and discussion about some factors having influence on the proposed process, mainly about the metabolic process constituted with homogeneous steps. The results show that the determination of rate limiting step by a modified enzymatic method is feasible, provided that some restrictions are added in any type of mechanisms.

The Generation of Vacuum Scale Using the Vapour Pressure of Water (물의 증기압을 이용한 진공도눈금의 생성)

  • The possibility of generation of the vacuum scale using the vapour pressure of water was evaluated. The range of vacuum from 3.3 kPa to 101.3 kPa was corresponds the vapour pressure of water in the temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$ The measured values of the vapour pressure of water were agreed within the deviation of $5\%$ comparing to reference value. This result shows the vapour pressure of water can be used as an secondary reference of the vacuum scale. Moreover it shows the thermo-dynamical properties such as, triple point, temperature-pressure curve of a material have a applicability in the vacuum scale as a reference in corresponding range of vacuum.

  • In this work, we study the properties of molecular structure and boundary orbital functions of the DPHMP-AlH and propiophenone and butyrophenone, which are forms of alkoxy-amine-aluminum derivatives. Furthermore, we investigate the effect on the selective reduction of the final products (R), (S)-phenylpropanol and (R), (S)-phenylbutanol by calculating the stereoscopic and thermodynamic parameters of the transition state. Considering the three-dimensional molecular structural stability, the transition status of (S) types DPHMP-AlH and alkylphenone was found to be more stable, resulting in the selective reductions of DPHM-AlH and alkylphenone from this result: (S)-(1)-phenylpropanol and (S)-(1)-phenylbutanol was confirmed that the formation was advantageous.

  • Fluid inclusion and stable isotope studies on the Sangdong tungsten skarn have led to a conclusion that the mineralizing fluids might be derived from a magma, which was inferred within 1km below the present Sangdong ore deposit. Mineral assemblages of the skarns appear to have formed under the equilibrium conditions as the fluids flow outward from a central fluid column, in which the quatz-mica occurs dominantly. A characteristic skarn showing mineralogical zonation by repeated over-prints. The quartz-mica zone at the central part of the Sangdong skarns shows the final stage of protracted fluid evolution. Thermodynamic conclusion based on simplified chemical compositions of major components may express quantitatively the conditions of the skarn formation by using diagrams.

  • One of the popular formulations is microemulsion in cosmetics. A kind of microemulsions is liquid crystal emulsion. Liquid crystal emulsion is used by wrapping functional ingredients. As the meaning of the name, Liquid crystals (LCs) are a state of matter that has properties between those of a conventional liquid and those of a solid crystal. There are various types of Liquid crystals (LCs) consisting of micelles or two layer structures of surfactants. Recently, microemulsion has been studied to improve its stability in thermodynamics of colloid science field. In this study, we prepared the microemulsion with PEG-8 Capryliccapric Glycerides and Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate. We studied the microemulsion with different oil types and different and cosurfactant content ratio. Also, the aim of this study is to develop a facial oil or a cleansing oil containing liquid crystal emulsion with functional ingredients.

  • A wide variety of unsaturated vinyl derivatives can be induced to undergo free-radical chain polymerization. The capability to carry out a thermodynamically feasible polymerization relies on its kinetic feasibility on whether the proceeds at a reasonable rate under a given set of reaction conditions. Initiator or promoter is often required to achieve the kinetic feasibility. Only a few unsaturated monomers including methyl methacrylate(MMA) are known to absorb light between 250 and 500 nm which is the most convenient wavelength range. Also, the polysilanes with unusual optical and electronic properties have been used as ceramic precursors, deep UV photoresists, photoconductors. The hydrosilation has been used to make many interesting types of silicon containing polymers such as copolymer, dendrimers. Bulk polymerization of monomers with different molar radio of hydrosilanes(9:1 through 1:9) were performed. A quartz test tube charged with monomer and hydrosilane was degassed and irradiated with 250 nm UV for 6 hours. The polymer was taken in toluene, precipitated in hexane, filtered off, and dried. It was found that the initiators appeared to competitively and concurrently function as both chain initiation and transfer agents in the polymerization of vinyl monomers.
