  • The Daehwa Mo-W deposit is located within the Gyeonggi massif. Quartz and calcite vein mineralization occurred in the Precambrian gneiss and Jurassic granites. Three main types (Type I: liquid-rich $H_2O$ type, Type II: vapor-rich $H_2O$ type, Type III: $CO_2-H_2O$ type) of fluid inclusions were observed and are classified herein based on their phase relations at room temperature. Within ore shoots, type III fluid inclusions have been classified into four subtypes (type IIIa, IIIb, IIIc and IIId) based on their volume percent of aqueous and carbonaceous ($CO_2$) phase at room temperatures combined with their total homogenization behavior and homogenization behavior of $CO_2$ phase. Homogenization temperatures of primary type I fluid inclusions in the quartz range from $374^{\circ}C$ to $161^{\circ}C$ with salinities between 13.6 and 0.5 equiv. wt.% NaCl. Homogenization temperatures of primary type III fluid inclusions in quartz of main generation, are in the range of $303^{\circ}C$ to $251^{\circ}C$. Clathrate melting temperatures of the type III fluid inclusions were 7.3 to $9.5^{\circ}C$, corresponding to salinities of 5.2 to 1.0 equiv. wt. % NaCl. Melting and homogenization temperatures of $CO_2$ phase of type III fluid inclusions were -57.4 to $-56.6^{\circ}C$ and 29.0 to $30.8^{\circ}C$, respectively. Fluid inclusion data indicate a complex geochemical evolution of hydrothermal fluids. The Daehwa early hydrothermal system is characterized by $H_2O-CO_2$-NaCl fluid at about $400^{\circ}C$. The main mineralization occurred by $CO_2$ immiscibility at temperatures of about 300 to $250^{\circ}C$. At the late base-metal mineralization aqueous fluid formed by mixing with cooler and less saline meteoric groundwater.

  • The Samgwang Au-Ag deposit has been one of the largest deposits in Korea. The deposit consists of eight lens-shaped quartz veins which filled fractures along fault zones in Precambrian metasedimentary rock, which feature suggest that it is an orogenic-type deposit. The Ti-bearing minerals occur in wallrock (titanite, ilmenite and rutile) and laminated quartz vein (rutile). They occur minerals including biotite, muscovite, chlorite, white mica, monazite, zircon, apatite in wallrock and white mica, chlorite, arsenopyrite in laminated quartz vein. Chemical composition of titanite has maximum vaules of 3.94 wt.% (Al2O3), 0.49 wt.% (FeO), 0.52 wt.% (Nb2O5), 0.46 wt.% (Y2O3) and 0.43 wt.% (V2O5). Titanite with 0.06~0.14 (Fe/Al ratio) and 0.06~0.15 (XAl (=Al/Al+Fe3++Ti)) corresponds with metamorphic origin and low-Al variety. Chemical composition of ilmenite has maximum values of 0.07 wt.% (ZrO2), 0.12 wt.% (HfO2), 0.26 wt.% (Nb2O5), 0.04 wt.% (Sb2O5), 0.13 wt.% (Ta2O5), 2.62 wt.% (As2O5), 0.29 wt.% (V2O5), 0.12 wt.% (Al2O3) and 1.59 wt.% (ZnO). Chemical composition of rutile in wallrock and laminated quartz vein has maximum values of 0.35 wt.%, 0.65 wt.% (HfO2), 2.52 wt.%, 0.19 wt.% (WO3), 1.28 wt.%, 1.71 wt.% (Nb2O3), 0.03 wt.%, 0.07 wt.% (Sb2O3), 0.28 wt.%, 0.21 wt.% (As2O5), 0.68 wt.%, 0.70 wt.% (V2O3), 0.48 wt.%, 0.59 wt.% (Cr2O3), 0.70 wt.%, 1.90 wt.% (Al2O3) and 4.76 wt.%, 3.17 wt.% (FeO), respectively. Rutile in laminated quartz vein is higher contents (HfO2, Nb2O3, As2O5, Cr2O3, Al2O3 and FeO) and lower content (WO3) than rutile in wallrock. The substitutions of rutile in wallrock and laminated quatz vein are as followed : rutile in wallrock [(Fe3+, Al3+, Cr3+) + Hf4+ + (W5+, As5+, Nb5+) ⟵⟶ 2Ti4+ + V4+, 2Fe2+ + (Al3+, Cr3+) + Hf4+ + (W5+, As5+, Nb5+) ⟵⟶ 2Ti4+ + 2V4+], rutile in laminated quartz vein [(Fe3+, Al3+) + As5+ ⟵⟶ Ti4+ + V4+, (Fe3+, Al3+) + As5+ ⟵⟶ Ti4+ + Hf4+, 4(Fe3+, Al3+) ⟵⟶ Ti4+ + (W5+, Nb5+) + Cr3+], respectively. Based on these data, titanite, ilmenite and rutile in wallrock were formed by resolution and reconcentration of cations (W5+, Nb5+, As5+, Hf4+, V4+, Cr3+, Al3+, Fe3+, Fe2+) in minerals of wallrock during regional metamorphism. And then rutile in laminated quartz vein was formed by reconcentration of cations (Nb5+, As5+, Hf4+, Cr3+, Al3+, Fe3+, Fe2+) in alteration minerals (white mica, chlorite) and Ti-bearing minerals reaction between hydrothermal fluid originated during ductile shear and Ti-bearing minerals (titanite, ilmenite and rutile) in wallrock.

  • The Shap granite encloses well developed quartz veins and veinlets containing molybdenite in association with other ore sulphide minerals. The preliminary study of the geochemical aspects of the granite stock and mineralisation of molybdenite in comparison with the porphyry deposits is carried out; the distribution of major, minor and ore metal elements in wall rocks, altered envelope and veins, and the molybdenum mineralisation, mainly in connexion with hydrothermal alteration are discussed. The molybdenite and other ore mineralisation, especially bismuthinite and chalcopyrite, are spatially closely related to the hydrothermal alteration adjacent to the veinings, and are dominant where the strong orthoclase alteration has taken place. A pattern of alteration and mineralisation can be recognised and forms the basic for the subdivision of the quarry into several distinct zones, which correspond with the sequence of alteration and mineralisation. The veins, veinlets and their alteration haloes can be further subdivided into a series of concentric zones.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of pine needle extract on the color, hardness, springiness, chewiness, pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value, and total bacterial number of seasoned pork meat stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 9 days. The pH levels of sauce samples were not affected by the mixing rate of the extracts. Acidity, soluble solids, and salinity gradually increased as the amount of added extract increased. Total polyphenolic contents in the sauce ranged from $1.01{\pm}0.02$ mg GAE/mL to $1.41{\pm}0.04$ mg GAE/mL, DPPH radical scavenging activity ranged from $0.06{\pm}0.01$ AEAC to $0.12{\pm}0.01$ AEAC, and ABTS radical scavenging activity ranged from $0.11{\pm}0.01$ AEAC to $0.19{\pm}0.01$ AEAC. The pH levels significantly decreased as the amount of added extract increased. The lightness ($L^*$), redness ($a^*$) and yellowness ($b^*$) values of meat tended to decrease with longer storage period (p<0.05). Hardness and chewiness also increased with longer storage period (p<0.05). The TBARS values decreased as the amount of added extract increased after 6 days (p<0.05). Total bacterial numbers of P5, P10, and P15 decreased compared to the control (p<0.05). In the sensory evaluation, taste and palatability were not significantly different among C, P5, and P10 (p<0.05). Further, flavor, color, tenderness, and juiciness were not different among the seasoned pork meats. These results suggest that pine needle extract can inhibit protein degradation, lipid oxidation, and bacterial growth when used as an additive to seasoned pork meat.

  • Samples from soils and crops were collected and analyzed in order to investigate the interactions of selenium among rocks, soils, and crops by hydrothermal alteration near epithermal mines in the region of Mio-san, Haenam. Soil samples included 6 samples each from mountain and farm area and compositional minerals and their contents were analyzed by water content, pH, ICP, XRD, XRF. Crop samples from onion and scallion were analyzed for chemical composition to elucidate the relationship with soils. Results from XRD analysis for soil samples showed that major compositional minerals are qualtz and feldspar, and illite, chlorite, hematite formed by hydrothermal alteration were included on a small scale. The pH ranges of soil samples from mountain and farm were measured at 4.6~4.9 and 5.2~6.7, respectively. The higher pH in farm soils may result from fertilization during agricultural activities. Results from ICP analysis showed that, compared to soil samples from mountain area with no potassium and calcium, significant amount of K and Ca were detected in soil samples from farms which is affected by fertilization. In a similar manner, potassium and calcium were absorbed and detected in crop samples at relatively high concentrations (116.89~169.79 ppm for K and 20.18~32.29 ppm for Ca). While the selenium contents in soil samples ranged from 18.35 ppb to 70.31 ppb which showed no significant difference, high concentrations of selenium were detected in onion (119.48~179.50 ppb) and scallion (146.65 ppb). These difference in enrichment for each element may result from the distinctive adsorption characteristics depending on crops.

  • The Samsung mine is located in Jeongsan-myeon, Cheongyang-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and is produces sericite ores. The purpose of this study is to investigate the geology and mineralogy of sericite one and its host-rock together with the alteration processes and age of sericitization. Geological survey, polarizing microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, X-ray fluorescent analysis, differential thermal analysis, and K/Ar isotope study have been employed for this study. The mine area is composed of Precambrian granite-gneiss and mica schist, and also Jurassic biotite granite. Serictization has occured within the granite-gneiss, and is interpreted to be formed by hydrothermal alteration. The sericite was formed by the breakdown of orthoclase, plagioclase, and biotite, respectively. With sericitization intensity increase, $SiO_2\;and\;Na_2O$ contents are decreased, while $Al_2O_3\;and\;K_2O$ increased. The formation age of sericite has been determined to be Jurassic, which corresponds well to the intrusion age of the biotite granite nearby.

  • This study evaluated potential application of illite, which is produced at Yeongdong area in Korea, to remove radiocesium released to environmental system through severe nuclear accidents. The Yeongdong illite was formed by metamorphose of micaceous schist in hydrothermal condition, and composed of quartz, illite, and albite. Sorption distribution coefficient ($K_d$) of cesium by the Yeongdong illite was higher than the $K_d$ values for other clay minerals. It may be affected by preferential adsorption of cesium to Frayed Edge Sites (FES) on illite. Nonlinear isotherm models were suitable to describe the sorption processes for the Yeongdong illite. Its max. single layer capacity was $250,000{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$ for cesium. Therefore, the Yeongdong illite could be an efficient and economic sorbent to prevent dispersion of radiocesium, and apply for remediation.

  • The geology of Sepola district in Mali is consisted of Birrimian group with metasedimentary rocks of lower Proterozoic and volcanoclastics, and later intrusive igneous rocks. Ore diposit in this district has the characteristics of vein- and disseminated-type gold deposit which was formed by infilling the secondary fracture zones related to the large-scale fault zone of NW direction within Birrimian group. It is confirmed as promising that Barani district has the gold grade of 0.53${\sim}$9.21 g/t with the extension of 1.3 km and width of 1 to 20.1 m. The ore mineralogy is simple with electrum, pyrite and galena. Fineness of gold grain ranges from 848 to 915(average 891) indicating mesothermal to hypothermal environment. Fluid inclusions are classified as liquid-rich type I. gas-rich type II and liquid-$CO_2$ bearing type III. Primary and pseudosecondary inclusions homogenize from 236 to 393$^{\circ}C$ with salinity of 0.0 to 8.6 wt% NaCl. Secondary inclusions homogenize from 103 to 184$^{\circ}C$ with salinity of 0.7 to 8.6 wt.%. From the relationship between homogeniztion temperature and salinity, it may be thought that auriferous fluid experienced dilution and cooling through inflow of meteoric water after fluid unmixing derived from pressure decrease in the temperature range of 400 to 250$^{\circ}C$. From the massive occurrence of quartz vein, simple mineralogy with paucity of sulfide, and presence of liquid-$CO_2$ bearing with high homogenization temperature, it is thought that gold mineralization in Sepola district correspods to the mesothermal to hypothermal ore deposit.

  • Manganese deposits ar the Dongnam mine occur as vein in the Pungchon limestone of Ordovician age. Manganese ore veins consist of the hydrothermal manganese carbonate ores in the deeper part and the supergene manganese oxide ores in the shallow part. Manganese carbonate ores consist mainly of rhodochrosite, with minor amount of proxmangite, garnet, calcite, quartz, pyrite, galena and sphalerite. Manganese oxide ores consist of rancieite, buserite, birnessite, vernadite, todorokite, pydrolusite, nsutite, hydrohetaerosite and goethite. Manganese oxide minerals were formed in the following sequences; 1) rhodochrosite ${\rightarrow}$ vernadite ${\rightarrow}$ birnessite ${\rightarrow}$ nsutite ${\rightarrow}$ pyrolusite, 2) pyroxmangite ${\rightarrow}$ birnessite, 3) Buserite ${\rightarrow}$ ransieite. Todorokite, buserite and hydrohetaerolite were precipitated from solution in the later stage. The natural analogue of synthetic buserite has been discovered from the mine. It has been disclosed that buserite transforms to rancicite by dehydration, and that distinction between buserite and todorokite is possible by X-ray diffraction studies combined with dehydration experiment. Minerals identified from the mine have been characterized using various methods including polarizing microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, elecrton microscopy and dehydration experiment.

  • Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the Jurassic peraluminous Hwacheon granite were measured, and compared with those of other Jurassic peraluminous Daebo granite in Korea. $\delta$$\^$18/O values for quartz and feldspar of the Hwacheon granite range from 8.2 to 10.6 and 5.8 to 9.0$\textperthousand$, respectively. Whole rock $\delta$$\^$18/O values for banded biotite gneiss country rocks surrounding the Hwacheon granites range from 8.1 to 9.4$\textperthousand$. Whole rock and biotite $\delta$D Values for Hwacheon granite range from -84 to -113 and -107 to -113$\textperthousand$, respectively. Whole rock $\delta$D values for banded biotite gneiss country rocks range from -76 to -100$\textperthousand$. Both $\delta$$\^$18/O and $\delta$D values of the Hwacheon granite are characterized by low values compared to the 'normal' values for the fresh peraluminous granitic rocks. Low $\delta$$\^$18/O values of the Hwacheon granite resulted from fluid-rock interaction for a long period. Isotopic modelling result renders that a relatively low-$\delta$$\^$18/O fluid below -1$\textperthousand$ was involved in subsolidus isotopic exchange under a relatively high fluid/rock ratio (<-6). The fluid of meteoric origin has experienced a modification of oxygen isotopic composition as a result of fluid-rock interaction with the Hwacheon granite and surrounding metapelitic country rocks.
