  • Purpose : Febrile seizure (FS) is the most common type of seizure. The role of genetic factors in FSs has long been recognized. A positive family history can be elicited in 25-40% of patients with FSs; nonetheless, the genes responsible for FSs in the majority of the population remain unknown. Interleukin-$1{\beta}$ ($IL-1{\beta}$) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that acts as an endogenous pyrogen. Thus, $IL-1{\beta}$ could be involved in the pathophysiology of FSs. Methods : To determine whether or not single nucleotide polymorphisms of the $IL-1{\beta}$ gene are associated with susceptibility to simple FSs, $IL-1{\beta}$ promoter -31 and -511 genotyping was performed by means of polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment (PCR-RF) length polymorphism in 40 FS patients (20 sporadic and 20 familial FS patients) and 33 controls. Results : There were no significant differences in the frequencies of -31 C/T and -511 C/T in the $IL-1{\beta}$ promoter gene, between simple FS patients and controls. Conclusion : The frequency of CT/CT increased relatively in familial FS patients. A study examining a larger number of FS patients is needed.

  • Plant viruses are among the important pathogens that cause severe crop losses. The most efficient method to control viral diseases is currently to use virus resistant crops. In order to develop the virus resistant crops, a detailed understanding of the molecular interactions between viral and host proteins is necessary. Recessive resistance to a pathogen can be conferred when plant genes essential in the life cycle of a pathogens are deficient, while dominant resistance is mediated by host resistance (R) genes specifically interacting with effector proteins of pathogens. Thus, recessive resistance usually works more stably and broadly than dominant resistance. While most of the recessive resistance genes have so far been identified by forward genetic approaches, recent advances in genome editing technologies including CRISPR/Cas9 have increased interest in using these technologies as reverse genetic tools to engineer plant genes to confer recessive resistance. This review summarizes currently identified recessive resistance genes and introduces reverse genetic approaches to identify host interacting partner proteins of viral proteins and to evaluate the identified genes as genetic resources of recessive resistance. We further discuss recent advances in various precise genome editing technologies and how to apply these technologies to engineer plant immunity.

  • Purpose: Febrile seizure (FS) is the most common type of seizure in children between 6 months to 5 years of age. A family history of febrile seizures can increase the risk a child will have a FS. Yet, prevalence of FS regarding external environment has not been clearly proved. This study attempts to determine the association between prevalence of FS and weather. Methods: This study included medical records from the Korea National Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Data were collected from 29,240 children, born after 2004, diagnosed with FS who were admitted to one of the hospitals in Seoul, Korea, between January 2009 and December 2013. During the corresponding time period, data from the Korea Meteorological Administration on daily monitoring of four meteorological factors (sea-level pressure, amount of precipitation, humidity and temperature) were collected. The relationships of FS prevalence and each meteorological factor will be designed using Poisson generalized additive model (GAM). Also, the contributory effect of viral infections on FS prevalence and weather will be discussed. Results: The amount of precipitation was divided into two groups for comparison: one with less than 5 mm and the other with equal to or more than 5 mm. As a result of Poisson GAM, higher prevalence of FS showed a correlation with smaller amount of precipitation. Smoothing function was used to classify the relationships between three variables (sea-level pressure, humidity, and temperature) and prevalence of FS. FS prevalence was correlated with lower sea-level pressure and lower humidity. FS prevalence was high in two temperature ranges (-7 to $-1^{\circ}C$ and $18-21^{\circ}C$). Conclusion: Low sea-level pressure, small amount of precipitation, and low relative air humidity may increase FS prevalence risk.

  • This study developed a solar radiation reflection pavement, so called a cool pavement, to lessen the urban heat island effect by coating a pavement surface with acrylic resins mixed with light-colored pigments. From a laboratory test, simulating solar heating process in pavements, the cool pavement reduced more than $12^{\circ}C$ of pavement temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ compared to a control porous pavement. With the increase of the mixing ratio of the pigments to acrylic resins, the temperature reduction effect increased, but its workability became worse due to higher viscosity. As a result, an appropriate mixing ratio was determined as 15%. The cool pavement had better durability than the control pavement: One quarter of Catabro loss and twofold dynamic stability. Its adhesion was also higher enough not to be debonded under traffic loading. In-situ noise and friction tests conducted in two field sites showed that the cool pavement reduced its noise level by 3.7dB in average and increased its friction level by 30% compared to the control pavement. The permeability of the cool pavement was little lower than the control pavement, but higher enough to satisfy the minimum requirement for porous pavements.

  • The heat transfer, pressure loss, and thermal performance in a cooling channel were evaluated for various new fan-shaped pin-fin geometries using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The turbulence was modeled using the low-Reynolds-number SST turbulence model in the Reynolds number range of 5,000-100,000. The numerical results for the area-averaged Nusselt numbers were validated by comparing them with the experimental data under the same conditions. A parametric study for three types of fan-shaped pin-fin geometries was performed with two parameters, namely, the leading and trailing reduction angles.

  • This paper reports numerical study results with respect to the thermal behavior of a natural convection cooled hybrid fin heat sink (HFH). The HFH consists of hybrid fins, hollow pin fins integrated with plate fins. The thermal performance of the HFH was numerically investigated by employing a commercial CFD software package and compared with that of the pin fin heat sink (PFH). Numerical study has found that array-based and mass-based heat transfer coefficients of the HFH are 12% and 37% greater than those of the PFH, respectively. Extended surface area and lighter weight may explain the better thermal performance of the HFH than the PFH.

  • In this paper, an unsteady analytical model for the thermal stratification in the pressurizer surge line of PWR plant has been proposed to investigate the temperature profile, flow characteristics, and thermal stress in the pipe. In this model, the interface level, between hot and cold fluid, is assumed to be a function of time while the other models had developed for time independent or steady state. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using a SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm. The analysis result for an example shows that the maximum dimensionless temperature difference is about 0.78 between hot and cold sections of pipe wall and the maximum thermal stress by thermal stratification is calculated about 276 MPa at the dimensionless time 27.0 under given conditions.

  • This experimental study investigated the effect of tip clearance and bypass flow on the cooling performance of a straight fin heat sink. Both the horizontal and vertical directions of the bypass flow were studied by using a mass flow controller and test sections. The thermal resistance of a heat sink was obtained to elucidate the response of the cooling performance to tip clearance and bypass flow. The thermal resistance of a straight fin heat sink gradually increases with increasing tip clearance. A flow guide unit was employed to reduce the bypass flow. An optimal distance from the leading edge of the heat sink to the flow guide unit was found for the fixed volume flow rate. The contribution of the flow guide unit to the thermal performance of a heat sink increases with increasing volume flow rate.
