  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of row cover materials supported by flexible FRP frames with three kinds of non-woven fabric, and five kinds of net in leaf vegetable cultivation. Leaf radish (Raphanus sativus L.), Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) were sown on May 21, 2003, and leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was planted at the same date in Agricultural Research Center for Climate Change, Jeju, Korea. Net coverings showed higher light transmittance than in non-woven fabric coverings. The average air and soil temperatures increased by $0.3{\sim}1.0^{\circ}C$ in net coverings and $0.5{\sim}3.0^{\circ}C$ in non-woven fabric coverings, respectively. There was no difference in relative humidity among the covering materials. All the vegetables showed higher growths and yields in non-woven coverings than in non-covering. The yields increased 81% in leaf lettuce, 58% in leaf radish, and 93% in Chinese cabbage, respectively. In addition, the insect damages were considerably reduced in the row covering plots than in the control, especially in non-woven fabric coverings.

  • This study focused on the usefulness of plant extracts for a city organic farm. Insecticidal activity of 8 plant species, plants crude extracts by ethanol and water, against third instar larvae (susceptible strain) of Plutella xylostella was evaluated in this study. Ethanol(25%) extracts of plant materials had better insecticidal activity than water extracts at the room temperature. Insecticidal activity were investigated by leaf disc spray method. Five plant extracts (Capsicum annuum, Chelidoniun majus, Leonurus sibiricus, Coptis japonica, Mentha piperascens) showed over 50% insecticidal activity to P. xylostella at the concentration of $1500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Extract of C. annuum showed the highest insecticidal activity (83.3%) against P. xylostella. Phytotoxicity was not observed on Raphanus sativus and Brassica campestris with spray application. Seed germination and growth of two plants were not affected. Extract of C. japonica revealed 73.3% control efficacy against P. xylostella of R. sativus and showed 70% control efficacy against those of B. campestris, respectively, in plastic house. Insecticidal activity against various insects was observed in C. japonica extract as 87.4% for R. sativus and 74.3% for B. campestris in the field. These results suggested that extracts of C. annuum, C. japonica showed the highest insecticidal activity, and could be used as city farm insecticides for organic farming.

  • We investigated the residual amounts of endosulfan and procymidone taken by vegetables grown in hydroponics culture and field conditions treated with the pesticides in order to evaluate safe cultivation concentration of the pesticides in the vegetables. Endosulfan and procymidone were selected as test pesticides because they have been reported to frequently detect in agricultural products at different concentrations. In hydroponic culture, by Chinese cabbage, procymidone was absorbed 3.8 times higher than endosulfan. The higher the pesticide concentration get, the worse the plant grew. In soil treated with 10 mg/kg of endosulfan, the pesticide absorbed by Leafy radish, Chinese cabbage and radish was less then their MRLs. In case of carlot, the residue level in soil which did not exceed its MRL was 1 mg/kg. The concentrations of procymidone in soil which did not exceed the MRLs in Leafy radish, Chinese cabbage, radish and carrot were 10, 10, 2 and 1 mg/kg, respectively Usually aged endosulfan and procymidone residues were less absorbed into crops than the fresh ones. Chinese cabbage absorbed more endosulfan and pocymidone than leafy radish, radish doing more than carrot.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the changes of soil properties and evaluation of plant utilization according to the application of compost used with phyllite. At this experiment, the plant cultivation test(lettuce and radish plant) was carried out to know about physico-chemical properties of compost, humus degradarion and stabilization degree, and some effects among rhe treatments were best at 20Mg/ha in PSPC 10(Phyllite, Saw dust, Pig manure Compost) plots and ar 10Mg/ha in PSPC 20 treatments, respectively. The EC value was high in the compost. Therefore the EC was appeared more than 2ds/m at the applied 40Mg/ha with compost. And in case of lettuce, Avail.-$P_2O_5$ and EC were more increased than in the radish plots, highly. In contrast, in case of radish, Toral-N, Total-C, and EC contents were decreased after plant cultivation. That is, it could know that radish was fond of absorprion of nitrogen. Also, BD values of soil physical properties were decreased according to increasing of phyllite addition ratio, however water holding capacity(WHC) was increased. The plant test had not been darnaged through the application of compost used with phyllite in soil and there had not been worse on changing of soil physico-chemical properties. Consequently, phyllite composts have been thought on agricultural utilized possibility.

  • Effects of freeze-drying on microbiological and sensory characteristics of yulmoo-kimchi (leaf radish kimchi) were investigated. Freeze-dried yulmoo-kimchi was stored at 0, 10 or $25^{\circ}C$ for 60 days and rehydrated with water. Optimum rehydration time of freeze-dried yulmoo-kimchi was 2 hr. Number of lactic acid bacteria of freeze-dried, 10 days-stored, rehydrated yulmoo-kimchi decreased significantly (p<0.05) in comparison with that of reference sample (non-freeze-dried yulmoo-kimchi), while no significant changes were observed after 10 days. As storage temperature increased, number of lactic acid bacteria of 10 days-stored samples decreased. pH value slightly increased by freeze-drying, while it decreased gradually during 60 days of storage. Sensory properties of freeze-dried/rehydrated sample were slightly inferior to those of reference sample, but those were relatively good when the sample was evaluated solely. Overall acceptability of freeze-dried, $0^{\circ}C$-stored, rehydrated sample was significantly inferior to reference sample (p<0.05) and it gradually decreased as storage temperature increased. Between storage periods of 10 through 60 days, sensory properties of 0 and $10^{\circ}C$-stored sample slightly decreased, while those of $25^{\circ}C$-stored sample decreased markedly.

  • In this study, we evaluated the effects of harvey powder on the fernentation of Yulmoo Kimchi, by measuring sensory, physicochemical, and microbiological properties during fermentation up to 31 days. The Yulmoo Kimchi, with various levels [0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4% (w/w)] of harvey powder, was fermented at $10^{\circ}C$. The product containing the control evidenced the highest scores for appearance and smell. Taste, carbonated taste, texture and overall acceptability were highest in the 0.1% harvey powder and control. During fermentation, titratable acidity increased while pH gradually decreased. Reducing sugar showed no difference at initial fermentation and then steadily decreased. Total vitamin C was gradually decreased during fermentation and reduced sharply after 10 days, and then almost maintained. Total polyphenol content was the highest in the 0.3% harvey powder on day 0 and maintained in all samples thereafter. Antioxidant effect of the Yulmoo Kimchi with 0.1% harvey powder was shown to be the highest. Also, the time required to achieve maximum levels of lactic acid bacteria, as determined by log numbers of cells and total viable cells, were more delayed in the experimental groups with added harvey powder than in the controls. Our results indicated that the Yulmoo Kimchii with below 0.1% added harvey powder was acceptable.

  • Saltwort (Salicornia herbacea L.), as a natural additive for regulating Mul-kimchi fermentation, was assessed for physicochemical and sensory characteristics of Yulmoo Mul-kimchi during storage. Saltwort in the form powder was directly added to the Yulmoo Mul-kimchi preparation at 0 (control), 1, 3, 5, and 7% (w/v) per weight of salt to evaluate their physicochemical, sensory, and microbiological characteristics in storage at $10^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The pH values of all treatments were high, indicating a less acidic environment in all treatments compared to those of the control sample throughout the preservation period. Total acidity increased with storage time as is usually seen with normal kimchi fermentations, whereas the increases were more gradual in the 3 and 5% treatments. The increases in total vitamin C continued until days 6 (control) to 13 (7%), and were different according to the amount of added saltwort and then they decreased after each peak. The fluctuation in reducing sugars fol owed a similar trends of total vitamin C content by showing an initial increase, followed by a decrease based on the saltwort concentration and storage day. The 5% treatment was most effective for suppressing the increase in turbidity among all treatments. The 3 and 5% treatments showed the highest lactic acid bacteria counts during the entire preservation period. In the sensory evaluation results, adding saltwort at more than 3% concentration attained an overall higher scores of acceptability with respect to color, smell, taste, fresh taste, sour taste, crisp, and overall acceptability characteristics. In conclusion, adding saltwort, particularly at concentrations of 3 and 5% extended the preservation period of Yulmoo Mul-kimchi by retarding fermentation effectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to enhance utilization of the waste nutrient solution (WNS) disposed at the hydroponic greenhouse. Several sets of testing were conducted to examine the effects of WNS: (a) a fertilizer effect, (b) soil column leaching, and (c) crop cultivation. The fertilizer effect test was applied in young radish cultivation by examining the growth characteristics of young radish and soil based on inorganic nitrogen according to the soil treatment of the nitrogen fertilizer (NF) and the WNS. The fertilizer effects and crop cultivation test were conducted with five treatments (A-E): A, non-treatment (water); B, 100% of NF; C, 70% of NF + 30% of WNS; D, 50% of NF + 50% of WNS; and E, 30% of NF + 70% of WNS. The soil column leaching test was conducted with three treatments: non-treatment (water), 100% of NF, 50% of WNS + 50% of NF. As a result, the chemical properties of the WNS were pH 6.0, EC 2.4dS·m-1, total phosphorus (T-P) 28mg·L-1, ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) 5.0mg·L-1, and nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) 301mg·L-1. The chemical properties of the soil were pH 5.51, EC 0.31dS/m, organic matter 2.08g·kg-1, NO3-N 9.64mg·kg-1, and NH4-N 3.20mg·kg-1. The results of fertilizer effects showed that the ratio of 50% or less of NF and 50% or more of WNS was high in young radish growth. There was no statistically significant difference between the soil chemistry in the C-E treatments where WNS was mixed with NF and the B treatment where only NF was applied. As a result of the soil column leaching test, there was no significant difference in the concentrations of NO3 and NH4 in the treatment of 100% of NF and 50% of NF + 50% of WNS. The study indicates, if the mixed fertilizer of WNS and NF is applied in the soil cultivation of young radish, it will reduce the use of NF and environmental pollution. This also helps reduce production costs on farmers and increase the yield of young radish.

  • This article presents an effect of deicer such as $CaCl_2$(calcium chloride) and EFD(Eco-Friendly Deicer) composed by organic acids on the survival and growth of plant. Pine and bush clover which are main natural species on the road side, and young radish and kidney bean which are cultivation species used in this test that responses of survival and growth were analyzed as grade concentration of deicers. Bush clover showed the most sensitive survival response among 4 species to the deicer. Pine growth didn't have statistical significance as the kind of deicers and concentration variation, but growths of bush clover and kidney bean showed growth inhibition in concentration more than 3% of $CaCl_2$ and EFD1. The results of survival and growth for $CaCl_2$(calcium chloride) demonstrated that young radish and pine are tolerant species and bush clover and kidney bean are sensitive species. Although EFD1 manufactured by chemical showed the negative effect on the survival and growth of plants, EFD2 made with waste compost was confirmed that it has the positive influence to the survival and growth of the both sensitive and tolerant plant species for chloride.
