  • The Korea Meteorological Administration has been operating wind profiler at 9 stations since the year of 2007. Among these stations, Bukgangneung is the only one that produces regularly both rawinsonde and wind profiler wind measurements at the same time. In this study, wind profiler measurements were compared with rawinsonde wind at Bukgangneung. Unlike most other studies which have used the temporal measurements for several days in summer season, in this study the routine rawinsonde measurments during almost one year (2016) were employed for the accuracy test of the wind. The monthly mean maximum observation height in Bukgangneung shows a large seasonal variation; it was relatively high in summer (4,310 m in July) and low in winter (2,130 m in December). The vertical observation rates at the altitude above these heights were less than 50%. The monthly and vertical wind comparison between rawinsonde and wind profiler shows that absolute bias and RMSE of zonal and meridional wind velocity are mostly less than 1 m/s and less than 2 m/s, respectively. In winter season the RMSE of wind velocity increased to 2~3 m/s. However, at some high altitudes and certain months, large errors were found. It is shown that these errors were related with very weak wind (less than 1 m/s) of wind profiler at 3,500~4,000 m from January to May and dramatic changes of wind the height of 1,500~2,500 m for in April. For Snow events the errors were lower than those for the winter season and for the heavy rain events the errors increased to 3~4 m/s at the height of 4~5 km.

  • This paper discusses the design of a ground clutter prevention fence for a radar wind profiler (RWP). The design point of the clutter fence is to improve the quality of the received signal by removing the non-weather clutter coming from the side. In this paper, a clutter prevention fence composed of a metallash mesh around the RWP is proposed, and the phase center of the antenna, the length, and height of the down fence, and the height and slop of the top fence through M&S are designed. The designed ground clutter prevention fence and 256 active phase array antennas were used as basic data. The effectiveness of the design was confirmed by a simulation. The side lobe in the ±90° direction was reduced by more than 30dB depending on the presence or absence of the designed ground clutter prevention fence. The fence was manufactured by 3D modeling, and the clutter shielding performance of approximately 20dB or more on the side of the antenna (±90°) was confirmed by applying it to the currently operated RWP.

  • The purpose of this study is to optimize the parameters related to consensus coherency within the PCL 1300, the operating program of wind profiler, from a validation of wind data between rawinsonde and wind profiler at Chupungryeong ($36^{\circ}13^{\prime}$, $127^{\circ}59^{\prime}$) site in Korea. It is then to analyze the diurnal and seasonal characteristics of the turbulence energy dissipation rate (${\varepsilon}$) in clear and rainy days from March 2009 to February 2010. In comparison of the wind data between wind profiler and rawinsonde during April 22-23, 2010, it was shown in a big error more than $10ms^{-1}$ over the height of 3,000 meters in the zonal (u) and meridional (v) wind components. When removing more than $10ms^{-1}$ in each wind speed difference of u an v components between the two instruments, the correlation coefficients of these wind components were 0.92 and 0.88, respectively, and the root mean square errors were 3.07 and $1.06ms^{-1}$. Based on these results, when the data processing time and the minimum available data within the PCL 1300 program were adjusted as 30 minutes and 60%, respectively, the bias errors were small. In addition, as a result of an analysis of sensitivity to consensus coherency of u and v components within the PCL1300 program, u components were underestimated in radial coherency, instantaneous and winbarbs coherency, whereas v components were overestimated. Finally by optimizing parameters of the PCL1300 program, the diurnal and seasonal means of ${\varepsilon}$ at each height were higher in rainy days than those in clear days because of increasing in the vertical wind speed due to upward and downward motions. The mean ${\varepsilon}$ for clear and rainy days in winter was lower than those of other seasons, due to stronger horizontal wind speed in winter than those in other seasons. Consequently, when the turbulence energy dissipation rates in the vertical wind speed of more than ${\pm}10cm\;s^{-1}$ were excluded for clear and rainy days, the mean ${\varepsilon}$ in rainy days was 6-7 times higher than that in clear days, but when considering them, it was 4-5 times higher.

  • In this paper, the phased-array transceiver (TRX) channel amplitude and phase calibration method for a radar wind profiler (RWP) based on the 256 active phased array is discussed. Without the additional module, the TX and RX calibration paths were secured using couplers and switches in the TRX front ends and the TRX switching duplexers, and the amplitude and phase of the 256 TRX were calibrated using a gain and phase detector. The beam widths and side lobes of five beams (vertical, east, west, south, and north) of the calibrated 256 active phased array antenna were confirmed by a near-field which agreed well with the simulation results. The proposed calibration method can be easily applied to a system based on an active phased array operated in an outdoor environment.

  • Wind LiDAR and Wind Profiler are devices that produce continuous vertical distribution of wind vector in high-resolution data, and their use has recently been increasing. Although the observation and data processing methods of the two devices are similar, differences in wind detection accuracy may occur depending on weather and operation settings. introduce the characteristics of the two instruments and wind calculation methods, and apply the latest instrument verification standards to evaluate their accuracy by comparing them with the wind observed with a radiosonde. Accordingly, a new direction for performance verification following the introduction of equipment and additional necessary complements are presented.

  • On 20 January 2017, the fresh snow cover which is more than 20 cm, accompaning with lightning occurred over Yeongdong coastal region for the first 3-hour of the heavy snowfall event. This study analyzed sounding observations in the heavy snow period which were including the measurements of wind profiler, radiometer and rawinsonde. The features examined from the vertical wind and temperature data at the two adjacent stations, Bukgangneung and Gangneung-Wonju National University, are summarized as follows: 1) The strong (30-40 kts) north-east winds were observed in the level from 2 to 6 km. The Strong atmospheric instability was found from 4 to 6 km, in which the lapse rate of temperature was about $-18^{\circ}C\;km^{-1}$. These features indicate that the deep convective cloud develops up to the height of 6 km in the heavy snowfall period, which is shown in the satellite infrared images. 2) The cooling was observed in the level below 1 km. At this time, the surface air temperature at Bukgangneung station decreased by $4^{\circ}C$. The narrow cooling zone estimated from AWS and buoy data was located in east-west direction. These are the features observed in the cold front of extratropical cyclone. The distributions of radar echo and lightning also show the same shape in east-west direction. Therefore, the results indicate that the Yeongdong thundersnow event was the combined precipitation system of deep convective cloud and cold frontal precipitation.

  • The UHF band wind profiler radars of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), which produces the vertical profile of the wind, need to be calibrated for better performance. The capabilities of the radar in detecting even light precipitation were used for the calibration of which reference takes the hourly series of ground rainfall rate measured by a rain gauge at the radar site. This calibration must be renewed regularly according to the methodology implemented in this work since errors occur on the wind vectors in the clear sky without reflectivity calibration. Comparing the wind by wind profiler with that by radiosonde, the optimal radar constant contributed to the improvement of wind accuracy.

  • According to the Unmanned aircraft system Traffic Management (UTM), drones are permitted to fly up to 150m above ground, which is located in the atmospheric boundary layer where there is considerable wind fluctuation due to turbulence. Although it is difficult to predict when turbulence will occur drone aviation safety could be enhanced by having a better understanding of the characteristics of vertical profile of wind in the flight area. We used wind lidar (WIndMast 350M) to observe vertical profiles of wind at the test site for aviation meteorological observation equipment located near Incheon International Airport in July and September, 2022. In this study, we utilized the observed wind profile data to propose a technique for obtaining information that could help improve the drone aviation safety. The Fourier transform analysis is used to evaluate the temporal characteristics of the horizontal wind speed at various vertical levels up to 350m. We also examined the relative contribution of the variance of wind having scales of less than an hour, a crucial scale for drone flight, to the variance of wind having all scales at each vertical altitude for days with and without precipitation.

  • The 1.29 GHz wind profiler radar is a remote observation device that is useful not only for calculating wind vectors in clear air, but also for detecting rainfall. The Doppler spectrum symmetry test is essential in the horizontal wind treatment process. Since asymmetry may be detected in rainfall cases, it is necessary to reflect in the wind calculation algorithm that the sign of the radial velocity is the same according to the magnitude of the vertical velocity. In the summer of 2017 (June, July), a wind vector calculation algorithm by Bragg scattering and Rayleigh scattering was developed using Changwon wind profiler data, and verified by comparing it with radiosonde data at 6 hour intervals.

  • The synoptic and kinematic characteristics of a heavy rainfall that occurred in Gangneung region on 22 to 24 October 2006 were investigated using weather maps, infrared images, AWS observation data and NCEP global final analyses data. The total amount of rainfall observed in the region for the period was 316.5 mm, and the instanteneous maximum wind speed was $63.7m\;s^{-1}$. According to the analysis of weather maps, before the starting of the heavy rainfall, an extratropical low pressure system was developed in the middle region of the Korean Peninsula, and an inverted trough was formed in the northern region of the peninsula. In addition, a jet stream on the upper charts of 300 hPa was located over the Yellow Sea and the southern boundary of the peninsula. A cutoff low in the cyclonic shear side of the upper jet streak, which was linked to an anomaly of isentropic potential vorticity, was developed over the northwestern part of the peninsula. And there are analyzed potential vorticity and wind, time-height cross section of potential vorticity, vertical air motion, maximums of the divergence and convergence and vertical distribution of potential temperature in Gangneung region. The analyzed results of the synoptic conditions and kinematic processes strongly suggest that the tropopause folding made a significant role of initializing the heavy rainfall.
