  • A three-dimensional numerical model (POM) is implemented to examine coastal upwelling in the northern Japanese coastal region with the passage of Typhoon Oliwa in September 1997. Observed sea surface temperature (SST) decreased suddenly ranging from $-6\;to\;-7^{\circ}C$ in the coastal regions, and such a SST decrease state lasted for more than ten days after the typhoon passed. The model successfully reproduces the observation and gives a clear explanation, the sudden decrease of SST occurred in the process of coastal upwelling with Ekman dynamics. The model also describes the sea surface cooling in the open ocean with vertical velocity.

  • In order to study the characteristics of physical environment in water column around the artificial upwelling structure, CTD and currents measurements were carried out along line observations. Before installation of artificial upwelling structure was installed, the stratification of water column existed 30m in water depth. After installation of artificial upwelling structure, however, stratification formation depth and strength changed depending on currents directions. It seems that the change of stratification has a close relation with upwelling of lower temperature water. After installing the artificial upwelling structure, the distributions of vertical flows were analyzed. Local upwelling and downwelling flows showed a distinct time and spacial changes. Local upwelling flows caused by artificial upwelling structure appeared 100 times larger than coastal upwelling in the South-East Sea of Korea. Upwelling flows generated by the artificial structure raised the high concentration of nutrients to upper layer from lower layer breaking stratification in the summer. Thus, upwelling structure plays an important role for vertical water circulation improving the food environments by increasing primary production.

  • In this study, variations in water temperature after the passage of typhoons in Korean waters from 2009-2015 were analyzed. Sea surface temperature (SST) images derived from satellite remote sensing data were used, and water temperature information came from real-time mooring buoys at Yangyang, Gangneung, Samcheok and Yeoungdeok, while wind data was supplied by the Korea Meteorological Administration. Differences in SST observed before and after the passage of a typhoon using the SST images were found to be affected by wind direction as well as hot and cool seasonal tendencies. Coastal water temperatures of the eastern part of the Korean peninsula, located to the right of a typhoon, as in the case of typhoons Muifa, Chanhom, Nakri and Tembin, were lowered by a coastal upwelling system from southerly winds across the water's surface at depths of 15m and 25m. In particular, typhoons Chanhom and Tembin decreased water temperatures by about $8-11^{\circ}C$ and $16^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, temperatures to the left of the typhoons were increased by a downwelling of offshore seawater with a high temperature through the mid and lower seawater layers. After the passage of the typhoons, further mixing of seawater at a higher or lower temperature due to southerly or northerly winds, according to the context, lasted for 1-2 or 4 days, respectively.

  • Mass mortalities of the farmed sea squirt, Halocynthia roretzi, occurred in August, 2006 along the Gyeongbuk coasts of the East Sea without any pathological symptom. Suspecting the No. 10 typhoon, Wukong, which had passed over the relevant locations in the middle of August, 2006 as a culprit of the mortalities, we compared water temperature stratifications of the affected coasts before and after the typhoon. Just prior to the typhoon, cold waters lower than $15^{\circ}C$ were stratified at depths deeper than 10m probably by a persisting upwelling of cold bottom waters. The typhoon enforced water off-coast waters into coasts for 5 days, replacing the cold waters at depths $10{\sim}20m$ which can be justified by Ekman Spiral Effect. The results were an increment of water temperature by $10^{\circ}C$ and more at depths where sea squirts were suspended. The sudden elevation of water temperature might drive the sea squirts under abnormal stress to mass mortality.

  • In the southeast sea of Korea, the cold water is concentrated in every summer, showing in abnormal oceanic conditions. Cold water occurred in the southeast sea is dominantly influenced by wind, which occurs when the south wind is continuously blowing for 3 to 7 days more. In this study, water temperature, wind speed and direction data of KMA, KHOA and KHNP, Chlorophyll-a of COMS/GOCI, GHRSST Level 4 SST of NASA, and red tide alert data of the National Institute of Fisheries Science were used to analyze the correlation between occurrence and change of the cold water and the red tide of Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The upwelling cold water mass showed a characteristic of moving northward along the current and occurrence a high concentration of chlorophyll along the water mass. Also, when the warm current were strong, the characteristic of red tide showed a northward moving.

  • There was a close relationship between spatio-temporal distribution of Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide and meso-scale variation of oceanographic environment around the Korean waters. Oceanographic conditions of Narodo island, where red tide usually first occurred during summer seasons were formation of the thermohaline frontal zone from 1995 to 2001. Huge C. polykrikoides red tides were observed in every uneven year during the past 7 years (1995~2001) and quasi-biennial oscillation also occurred in the oceanographic variations of sea surface temperature and salinity in the northern part of the East China Sea during the same years. The distribution area and moving pattern of C. polykrikoides red tides were definitely depended on the temporal and spatial variation of upwelling cold water originated form the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula in summer season.

  • This paper studies the origin of low back-scattering area appeared on the SAR image taken on the coastal waters off the southeast coast of Korea on July 5, 2000. Cold waters were frequently observed during summer on this coastal waters, and quasi-simultaneously taken AVHRR and SeaWiFS images also showed cold surface waters and high concentration of chlorophyll-a, respectively. By synergetic analysis of multi-sensor satellite images, it is strongly suggested that the cold and nutrient rich upwelling waters caused the high phytoplankton density and high biological activities in the water producing natural films for low back-scattering.

  • To understand major factors that affected on distinct Cochlodinium bloom scale in Korean coasts in 2007 and 2008, oceanographic and meteorological characteristics during Cochlodinium bloom period were compared. The main reason for large scale blooms in 2007, covering both southern coast and eastern coast with about 10 million US dollars fish kills, was attributed to sufficient nutrient supply by heavy rainfall, upwelling in the coast arising from irregular wind shift, weak thermocline and low grazing pressure by zooplanktons during Cochlodimum bloom development period. On the contrary, small scale blooms in 2008 covering only inshore areas of southern coast without fish kills was attributed to the low nutrient level in coastal areas by long persistent drought and strong influence of oligotrophic offshore water onto inshore and high grazing pressure by extra ordinarily abundant zooplanktons during Cochlodinium development period. Conclusively, it was estimated that nutrient level, strength of offshore water and feeding pressure might play a significant role in the difference of bloom scale between the two years.
