In this study, a new methodology fur the assessment of liquefaction potential is proposed and characteristics of the proposed methodology are verified. The experimental parameter of this methodology, that is, the plastic shear strain trajectory, is compared with the dissipated energy. It is shown that this parameter can express the liquefaction behavior which is generated by excess pore water pressure. This methodology takes advantage of the shear strain time history determined from the site response analysis based on the real time history of earthquake. In this site response analysis, shock type and vibration type records of similar predominant frequency are inputted. The liquefaction safely factors based on the proposed methodology and Korean detailed assessment related to the classical method are calculated from the results of the site response analysis and laboratory dynamic tests. Through this study, it is found that the proposed methodology can not only simulate the liquefaction behavior of saturated soils hut also express the seismic characteristics reasonably : leading type, predominant frequency, maximum acceleration, duration time.

The purpose of this study is to examine the basis of design condition of existing treatment processes, namely, Extended Aeration Process, Conventional Activated Process, High Rate Aeration Process and Modified Aeration Process, by clarifying the correlations of influent wastewater concentration, hydraulic retention time, food-to-microorganism ratio and sedimentation of sludge, as well as to ascertain the feasibility of design, regardless of the existing design condition. In particular, this study made a priority investigation of hydraulic retention time and sludge sedimentation, because sludge sedimentation is the main factor$^{1)}$ which determines the operating conditions of existing treatment processes. Therefore, it is generally known that in case exceeds the sphere of design presented for each treatment, sludge bulking may occur. The results of Lesperance's test$^{1)}$, which formed the basis of design, showed the sphere of loading without security of sludge sedimentation, as in Fig. 1. The reason for sludge bulking in a certain condition, as above, is due to failure in application of optimum loading corresponding to each retention time by employing a few operating condition, which proved to be consecutively workable after years of trials and failures by Lesperance, for test conditions. However, the result of this test showed that in case of proper maintenance of loading. sludge sedimentation can be ensured under 120 SVI. Therefore, this study suggested hydraulic retention time and its corresponding optimum loading, and identified the hydraulic retention time as a determinant of sludge sedimentation. And. on the basis of these findings, this study suggested the feasiblity of UHR(Ultra High Rate), a new operating process, exceeding several times the applicable loading value of High Rate Aeration Process under one hour retention time which has not yet applied to the existing treatment processes.
The effect of several simplified methods of seismic analysis is estimated. The pounding/contacting of superstructures were considered in the multispan simply supported bridge and the multispan continuous bridge. Although nonlinear time history analysis is generally used for seismic analysis of bridges, many codes including AASHTO propose several simplified analysis methods. AASHTO, however, does not mention pounding. Therefore, the simplified methods may produce results that are different from those of nonlinear time history analysis. This study developed nonlinear analytical models of the two types of bridges mentioned. The models were then modified to the simplified linear models for simplified analysis. The results of the simplified methods were compared with those of nonlinear time history analysis. It was found that including of the pounding/contacting element in the simplified methods generated responses similar to those of the nonlinear time history analysis.

For the analysis of multistory frames with sidesway, no adequate procedures can be found in the classical methods of structural analysis. Even well-known procedures such as the slope-deflection method and the moment distribution method may not be effective tools since those methods require a multiple of computational labor and/or yield results of approximate values. In this study, a direct method is developed and proposed for the analysis of multistory frames with sidesway, which is due to the lateral loads, asymmetry of the structure itself, or asymmetry of vertical loadings. The proposed method is to obtain simple forms of equations derived by a mathematical formulation of the moment distribution procedure combined with successive correction concept. Numerical illustrations show that the results obtained by the proposed method agree well with those by rigorous ones. Undoubtedly, this newly developed method can be applied more easily for the analysis of structural frames without joint translation as well as continuous beams.
Recently, the new pavement design method considering Korean environment and the specification for improving performance of pavement are being developed in Korea. The Jointed Concrete Pavement Program Applying Load Discretization Algorithm (called HEART-JCP) is one of the results of Korea Pavement Research Project in Korea. HEART-JCP program is developed to analyze various loading condition using the load discretization algorithm without mesh refinement. In addition, it can be modified easily into multi-purpose concrete pavement nidyses program because of the modularized structure characteristic of HEART-JCP. The program consists of basic program part and load discretization part. In basic program part, the displacement and stress are computed in the concrete slab, sub-layer, and dowel bar, which are modeled with plate/shell element, spring element and beam element. In load discretization program part, load discretization algorithm that was used for the continuum solid element is modified to analyze the model with plate and shell element. The program can analyze the distributed load, concentrated load, thermal load and body load using load discretization algorithm. From the result of verification and sensitivity study, it was known that the loading position, the magnitude of load, and the thickness of slab were the major factors of concrete pavement behavior as expected. Since the result of the model developed is similar to the results of Westergaard solution and ILLISLAB, the program can be used to estimate the behavior of jointed concrete pavement reasonably.

In this paper, another method for system reliability analysis, called the extended incremental load method, is introduced. The method is an extension of the conventional incremental load method and has been developed aiming at evaluating the probability of system failure(or system reliability) of continuous structures such as floating offshore structures under the multiple loading condition, more realistically considering the post-ultimate behaviour of failed components and directly using the strength formulae of principle components in a structure with employing the modified safety margin equation proposed herein in the system analysis. The method has been applied to the Hutton TLP operated in the Hutton field in the North Sea and a certain variant of the design using the TLP Rule Case Committee type improved strength models. System failure probability and corresponding system reliability indices are derived for a more economical and efficient design. The redundancy characteristics are also addressed. The TLP forms are shown to possess high reserve strength and system safety.

Since an orthotropic steel deck bridge has large number of design variables and shows complex structural behavior, it would be very difficult and impractical to directly use a Conventional Single Level (CSL) optimization algorithm for its optimum design. Thus, in this paper, an Improved Multi Level Design Synthesis (IMLDS) optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the computational efficiency. In the proposed IMLDS algorithm, a coordination method is introduced to divide the bridge into main girders and orthotropic steel deck with preserving the characteristics of the structural behavior. For an efficient optimization of the bridge, the IMLDS algorithm incorporates the various crucial approximation techniques such as constraints deletion, Automatic Differentiation (AD), stress reanalysis, and etc. In the case of orthotropic steel deck system, optimum design problems are characterized by mixed continuous discrete variables and discontinuous design space. Thus, a modified Genetic Algorithm (GA) is also applied to optimize discrete member design for orthotropic steel deck. From the numerical example, the efficiency and convergency of the IMLDS algorithm proposed in this paper is investigated. It may be positively stated that the IMLDS algorithm will lead to more effective and practical design compared with previous algorithms.
This paper describes the smoke filling process of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) codo to the simulation of fire induced flows in the atrium space (SIVANS atrium at Japan) containing smoke radiation effect. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the discrete ordinates method. The result of the calculated smoke temperature containing radiation effect has shown a better prediction than the result calculated by only convection effect in comparison with the experimental data. This seems to come from the radiation effect of $H_2$O and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Thus, the consideration of the radiation effect under smoke in fire should be necessary in order to get more realistic result. Also the numerical results indicated that the smoke layer is developing at a rate of about 0.1 m/s. It would take about 450 seconds after starting the ultra fast fire of 560 kW that the smoke layer move down to 1.5m above the escape level.

A series of unreinforced masonry(URM) walls were analytically investigated by FEM for a limited version of seismic in-plane performance. For this, URM walls were assumed to be continum and modeled as isotropic plane stress elements, within which the nature of cracking was propogated. Accordingly, behavioral mode of cracking in URM was modeled by smeared-crack approach. Total of 70 cases were considered for various parameters such as axial load ratio, aspect ratio and effective section area ratio due to the existence of opening, etc. The analysis results indicate that these parameters significantly and interactively influence over the ultimate strength of URM walls. Finally, it is suggested that the response modification factor for URM adopted in the current Korean Standard should be validated considering various forms of brittleness and probable failure modes in URM.

The motion of two-dimensional floating breakwaters with rectangular clots-section which are moored tautly in shallow water has been analyzed using a velocity potential matching method in which the fluid region is devided into sub-regions and then unknown coefficients of velocity potentials are determined from the continuity condition of mass and momentum flux of fluid at imaginary boundaries between sub-regions. The method originally suggested by Ijima et al.(1972) for the motion of submerged body has been modified to analyze the motion of floating body. The total fluid region has been divided into three sub-regions : the incident wave region, the transmitted wave region and the region below the floating breakwater. The restoring forces induced by mooring lines which were ignored by Ijima et al.(1972) have been modeled as linear springs with the initial tension effects. This method has been verified through the comparions with results from hydraulic expriments. Applications to various conditions of floating breakwater have been performed.
