Combustion Characteristics of Methane-Air Mixture in a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber(3) : Exhaust Emission (정적연소기에서의 메탄-공기 혼합기의 연소특성(3) : 배기배출물)

  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the exhaust emission characteristics of homogeneous charge, stratified pattern and inhomogeneous charge under various conditions using gas chromatography. In the case of homogeneous charge condition, the $CO_2$ concentration is proportional to excess air ratio and overall charge pressure, the $CO_2$ concentration is proportional to excess air ratio and the UHC concentration is inversely proportional to ignition time and overall charge pressure. In the case of stratified pattern, the RI(rich injection) condition shows better exhaust emission characteristics, especially $CO_2$, than that of HI (homogeneous injection) or LI (lean injection) conditions. In inhomogeneous charge conditions, when initial charge pressure is increased, $CO_2$ and UHC concentration is reduced but $O_2$ concentration is increased. And when the excess air ratio of initial charge mixture is 3.0, UHC and $CO_2$concentration show lowest values.

  • 연료의 가격이 높아지고 대체연료의 개발이 급속동로 진전되고 있는 오늘날 디이젤기관은 열효율 의향상과 장래연료에의 대응이 중요한 과제로 되어있다. 대체연료로서 유망시되고있는 석탄약화 연료, 알코호르 쉘오일(Shell Oil)등이 앞으로 싱용화되면 제업이나 플랜트의 규모에 따라서는 가격뿐만 아니라 그질에도 큰 차이가 있게되고 정도나 비중의 변화등으로 대표적인 세탄가의 저화가 예상되어서 현상 디이젤기관의 연소방식 그대로는 이에 대응 할 수 없게될 가능성이 높다. 이들에 대응하기의한 하나의 방법으로서 기관을 단열화함으로써 냉각손실을 저장시키고, 높아진 배기에너지를 축출력으로서 다시 회수하는 단열터어보 컴파운드엔진의 개념이 있다. 이 렇게 하면 열효율의 대표적인 개성과 아울러 단열화하여서, 연소실의 벽온이 높아지므로 저세 탄가 연료의 연소도 가능하게 된다. 단열기관의 착상은 1940년대 융커어스사의 2-사이클 수평 대향기관에 이미 일부 채용되었었고, 또 터어보 컴파운드에 의한 배열의 회수도 Lycoming사 R3350 엔진등에서 실용화되었던 예가 있다. 그러나 이들을 동시에 채용하여 대돌적인 연비저 강효과를 추구한 실제의 예로서는 근년 미국 육군의 위탁으로 Cummis사가 연구성과를 발효하고 있는것 뿐이다. 그리고 일본의 Komatsu사가 또한 독자적으로 단열터어보 컴파운드기관의 연 구를 하고 있다. 다음은 그 기관을 소개하고 또한 다종연료성등 단열엔진의 특성에 대하여 설명 한다.

An experimental study on the dynamic behavior in an aero-valved pulsating combustor (공기밸브형 맥동연소기의 동적 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance characteristics of the aero-valved pulsating combustor designed to increase the practical applications of the system. The geometric effect on the stable condition and the dynamic behavior of the system is identified. The equivalence ratio, the inflammability limit, the operating frequency, and thrust were also measured when the system oscillated stably. It is found that while the operating condition is sensitive to the diameter of the inlet pipe and the length of the tailpipe, the maximum value of the turn down ratio was obtained up to 3.2. The measured air flow rate shows that the equivalence ratio increases monotonously with the increasing fuel flow rate and decreasing air inlet diameter and tailpipe length. The measured operating frequency can be approximated by the simple linear equation and the discrepancy is within five percent. The system produced the maximum total thrust of 14N and the minimum specific fuel consumption of 0.155 Nm$^{3}$/h.N when the total thrust was 13N.

小型 디이젤機關에 있어서 알코올 利용에 관한 硏究

  • The method of methanol using in diesel engines hasn't been established yet because of it's low ignition characters. But many studies about it with many methods have been doing recently. If alcohol can be used in diesel engines, smoke and NO$\sub$x/, which is a big problem in diesel engines, can be reduced large. The purpose of this study is to establish using method of alcohol, as a substitute fuel. In this study, Combustion characters, engine performance and exhaust gas emissions are checked by using gasfication diesel method. Concluding remarks of this study are as follows. (1) Methanol can be used within 30% of total inducing energy, if above that rate, it can't be used because of knocking and bad operating condition. (2) Under the low load, the effect of methanol inducing of fuel consumption is somewhat bad, but under the high load, the effect is very good. (3) Under the high load, smoke limit is a marked improvement with methanol inducing.

  • Circulating Fluidized Bed(CFB) combustion has the several advantages which are the fuel flexibility, the economy, the efficiency and the environment. It is necessary to apply a renewable energy to produce electricity due to the Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS) mandates recently. So, in this study, co-combustion with a coal and a wood pellet was investigated to evaluate the combustibility and the environment as function of blending ratio of them in a Lab-scale CFB reactor. To investigate the characteristics of the co-combustion, the blending ratio which is the weight of wood pellet by the total calorific value of the supplied, was considered. Bed material was a river sand(No. 7). As increasing the blending ratio, the exhausted gas emissions such as CO, NOx, HC and SOx were decreased. But in case of wood pellet over 30%, CO, HC and SOx emission were increased. And the gas temperatures at the downstream were decreased.

  • With the development of an eco-friendly environment and the automobile industry, research is being actively conducted to increase thermal efficiency and reduce exhaust gas through complete combustion in internal combustion engine vehicles. In particular, research is underway to increase engine load and output by understanding the volatility and combustion characteristics of gasoline, and research is underway to reduce soot and harmful gases and realize optimal efficiency based on the distillation and combustion characteristics of diesel fuel. . Therefore, in this study, based on the contents of KS M ISO 3045 on the distillation test method for petroleum products according to the Korean industrial standard, distillation experiments were conducted based on gasoline and diesel from 4 refineries marketed and used in Korea. The distillation experiment confirmed the correlation with the distillation temperature according to the amount of distillation, and the distillation characteristics were analyzed by comparing the distilled fuel to confirm the suitability of meeting the test standards.

  • Air-staged combustion is known to be one of the techniques of NOx reduction. The objective of this study is to determine the optimal ratio of air flow distributed for CCOFA and SOFA; at this optimal ratio, the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of a pulverized coal-fired boiler are maintained at a satisfactory level. A numerical investigation was performed at various airflow ratios of 16.7/83.3%, 25/75%, 50/50%, 75/25%, and 83.3/16.7%. An inert gas was considered as a substitute for air to isolate the effects of the cooling process and chemical reaction on NOx reduction; during NOx reduction in air-staged combustion, both the effects typically occur simultaneously. The results of our study show that the optimum condition, under which the maximum NOx reduction and highest boiler efficiency can be obtained, corresponds to the equal splitting of the over-fire air between CCOFA and SOFA.

A Study on the Knocking Characteristics with Various Excess Air Ratio in a HCNG Engine (HCNG 엔진의 공기과잉율 변화에 따른 노킹 특성에 관한 연구)

  • As emission regulation for vehicle has been reinforced, many researches carried out for HCNG(hydrogen-natural gas blends) fuel to the conventional compressed natural gas (CNG) engine. However, abnormal combustion such as backfire, pre-ignition or knocking can be caused due to high combustion speed of hydrogen and it can result in over heating of engine or reduction of thermal efficiency and power output. In the present study, improvement of combustion performance was observed with HCNG fuel since it can extend a flammability limit. Knocking characteristics for CNG and HCNG fuel were investigated. Feasibility of HCNG fuel was evaluated by checking the knock margin according to excess air ratio. The operation of engine with HCNG was stable at minimum advance for best torque(MBT) spark timing and knock phenomena were not detected. However, it is necessary to prepare higher knock tendency since possibility of knock is higher with HCNG fuel.

NOx Formation Characteristics of the Coal-derived Synthetic Gas Containing $CH_4$ and $NH_3$ Components (메탄 및 암모니아를 포함하는 석탄 합성가스의 NOx 발생 특성)

  • Theoretical analysis was conducted on the combustion and the NOx formation characteristics of the coal-derived synthetic gases with medium-BTU heating value. The synthetic gas was assumed to contain the major species of CO, $H_2,\;CO_2$, and $N_2$ and the minor species of $CH_4$ and $NH_3$. Through thermochemical analysis on the combustion of the synthetic gas, the flame temperature, major and minor species of exhaust gas, and thermal and fuel NOx emissions were computed. In addition, the effects of the $CH_4$ and the $NH_3$ components in syngas fuel on combustion and NOx emission were investigated. Based on the computed results on the synthetic gases, basic direction and guidelines were provided fur the low NOx design of gas turbine combustor.

An Evaluation on the Combustion Characteristics of Heavy Oil-Water Emulsions (중질유-물 유화연료의 연소특성 평가)

  • Most researches regarding emulsified fuel were in the areas of emulsifier, emulsified fuel manufacturing and emulsified fuel droplet combustion, but there were little papers published regarding emulsified fuel combustion and boiler efficiency in an industrial boiler. The main purpose of this study is to clarify whether improvements in the boiler efficiency and the reduction of pollutants such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke exist or not when emulsified fuels are combusted in the commercial boiler. Main experimental parameters were water content in heavy oil , excess $O_2$, and boiler load. The fuels used in this experiment were 0.5 B-C, and 5 kinds of 0.5 B-C/water emulsified fuels. The combustion characteristics of heavy oil and its emulsions with water were investigated in an industrial boiler. The combustion stability was monitored and exhaust gases such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke were measured with excess $O_2$ and combustion load. In case of emulsified fuel combustion, flame stability was poor and boiler efficiency was lowered by 1.6~5.7%, but emission levels of CO and smoke were improved.
