  • Ductility-based seismic design is strongly required for the rational and cost-effective design of RC piers, and a reliable evaluation of shear strength is indispensable for its success. Unlike the flexural behavior of RC columns, shear behavior is highly complex, due to its many effects such as size, aspect ratio, axial force, ductility and so on. To address this, many design and empirical equations have been proposed considering these effects. However, these equations show significant differences in their evaluation of the initial shear strength, and the reduction in strength with the increase of ductility. In this study, the characteristics of initial shear strength of hollow sectional columns were investigated using experiments with the parameters of aspect ratios, void ratios, web area ratios and load patterns. The test results were analyzed through a comparison with the values predicted by empirical equations. On the basis of the mechanical characteristics and test results, a new empirical equation was proposed, and its validity was assessed.

  • Well-designed bolted connections can exhibit excellent ductile behavior through bearing mechanism until the occurrence of bolt shear rupture. The ultimate strength analysis of eccentric bolted connections is an economical and mechanistic approach which uses such ductility. However, the bolt load-deformation relationship, which forms basis of the current practice, is based on very limited combinations of bolt and steel materials. The primary objective of this study was to establish the general bolt force-deformation relationship based on systematic single-bolt bearing connection tests. The test results showed that the projected area of the bolt hole and the strength and thickness of the plate to be connected are the main factors affecting the force-deformation relationship. The results of this study can be used for the instantaneous center of rotation method (ICRM) to achieve more accurate analysis and economical design of a variety of group-bolted connections subjected to eccentric shear.

  • Seismic ground motion can vary significantly over distances comparable to the length of a majority of highway bridges on multiple supports. This paper presents results of fragility analysis of two actual highway bridges under ground motion with spatial variation. Ground motion time histories are artificially generated with different amplitudes, phases, as well as frequency contents at different support locations. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to study dynamic responses of the bridges under these ground motions. The effect of spatial variation on the seismic response is systematically examined and the resulting fragility curves are compared with those under identical support ground motion. This study shows that ductility demands for the bridge columns can be underestimated if the bridge is analyzed using identical support ground motions rather than differential support ground motions. Fragility curves are developed as functions of different measures of ground motion intensity including peak ground acceleration(PGA), peak ground velocity(PGV), spectral acceleration(SA), spectral velocity(SV) and spectral intensity(SI). This study represents a first attempt to develop fragility curves under spatially varying ground motion and provides information useful for improvement of the current seismic design codes so as to account for the effects of spatial variation in the seismic design of long-span bridges.

  • In this paper, we present the load-deflection behavior of GRP pipes. GRP buried pipes are widely used in construction in the advantage of their superior mechanical and physical characteristics such as high chemical resistance, high corrosion resistance, right weight, smooth surface of the pipe, and cost effectiveness from soil-structure interaction. To design flexible pipes to be buried underground, it should be based on the ASTM D2412(2010). When applying ASTM D 2412(2010) to the design, pipe stiffness(PS) must be predetermined by the parallel-plate test which requires tedious and laborious working process. To overcome such problems, the finite element simulations for finding the load-deflection behavior of the GRP flexible pipes is installed at UTM testing machine. In the finite element simulations, basic data, such as the modulus of elasticity of the material and cross-sectional dimension, is used. From the investigation, we found that the difference between experimental result and analytical prediction is less than 15% when the pipe deflected 3% and 5% of its vertical diameter although the pipe material is not uniform across the cross-section.

  • An efficient design concept for earthquake loads, which is called performance based design, has been standard design in USA, Europe and Japan since those countries experienced severe earthquake damage at end of 90's. For general design, struttie model well predicts the strength of the disturbed region, however, it does not provide ductility information at the failure. Therefore, simple tools which are able to predict both the strength and the ductility of RC structures are in demand. 2D lattice model is introduced in this study as an analysis tool for the RC structures subject to earthquake. Experimental correlation studies indicate the 2D lattice model quite well predict the strength as well as the ductility of RC structures.

  • Extensive computer simulations to account for the randomness in the process of seismic demand estimation have been a serious obstacle to the adoption of probabilistic performance assessments for the decision of applying seismic intervention schemes. In this study, a method for rapid fragility assessments based on a response database and the fragility contour method are presented. By the comparison of response contours in different formats, it is shown that representing maximum responses in ductility demand is better for the investigation of the effect of structural parameter changes on seismic demands than representations in absolute values. The presented fragility contour enables designers to practically investigate the probabilistic performance level of every possible retrofit option in a convenient manner using visualized data sets. This example demonstrates the extreme efficiency of the proposed approach in performing fragility assessments and successful application to the seismic retrofit strategies based on limit state probabilities.

  • Precast concrete (PC) beam-column connections using ductile rods are proposed for earthquake zone. An existing beam-column connection, two PC specimens designed by considering failure modes and a conventional RC specimen were tested under cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic performance. The specimens were designed to satisfy the requirements of current design code. The variables are the yield strength of longitudinal reinforcing bars of PC beams. The test results showed that the proposed system applying smaller yield strength of the longitudinal reinforcing bars at the PC beams than the ductile rods was satisfied with seismic criteria. The deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the proposed PC beam-column connections were greater than those of the existing DDC system.
