  • The effect of operating condition was studied experimently on the characteristics of twin sprays ejected from two airblast atomizers, within the range of the mass air-fuel ratio 1.36∼3.54. Water and nitrogen gas were used as test fluids for the experiments. Spray characteristics of liquid spray were measured with measurement of mass distribution and instantaneous image of the spray cone. Experimental results show that the maximum specify of the distribution were lowered but distributed over the larger area when the ROA ratio increased, Center of mass position did not change with increasing water mass flow, Increase of the nozzle distance has an small effect on mass distribution of interaction area but distributed over the larger area. It was also conformed that the effect of interaction near central point of collision decreased with the increase of the ROA ratio on interaction area from comparison using superposition method

  • A performance test of inter propellant seal for a 75 ton class turbopump is conducted using water to evaluate leakage and endurance performance. Each part of fuel pump side and oxidizer pump side for a prototype inter propellant seal has been tested for verifying endurance performance during total accumulated test time 2,100 sec in water. The fuel pump side part with one-stage seal of carbon floating ring shows average leakage rate 13.7 gram/sec under average seal differential pressure 9.4 bar. On the other hand, the oxidizer pump side part with two-stage seal assembly of carbon floating rings shows average leakage rate 7.3 gram/sec under average seal differential pressure 9.5 bar. After the endurance performance test, the inter propellant seal shows good physical condition. A leakage performance test of the inter propellant seal for cryogenic environment will be performed using LN2 in the near future.

  • The effects of carbon black on the electrodes performance and on the structure of the catalyst layer in Raney nickel hydrogen electrodes for alkaline fuel cells were investigated by using electrochemical and nitrogen adsorption methods. The optimum content of carbon black in the catalyst layer of Raney nickel hydrogen electrode was 2wt%. The limiting current density was increased by the addition of carbon black due to the enlargement of gas-liquid interface area. The rate determining step at the limiting current density was supposed to be a step where hydrogen dissolves at gas-liquid interfaces.

  • Droplet vaporization at various ambient pressures is studied numerically by formulating one dimensional evaporation model in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. The modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used to account for the real gas effects in the high pressure condition. Non-ideal thermodynamic and transport properties at near critical and supercritical conditions are considered. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. The droplet lifetime increases with increasing pressure at temperature lower than the critical temperature, however, it decreases with increasing pressure at temperature higher than the critical temperature. The solubility of nitrogen can not be neglected in the high pressure and it becomes higher as the temperature and the pressure go up.

  • The flame length in coaxial diffusion flame configurations was investigated when the kerosene fuel flow rate, temperature of the oxidizer stream, and inert gas concentrations in the oxidizer stream were varied. The diffusion flame was photographed using a Schlieren camera under each of the experimental conditions and the obtained images were then digitized to measure the flame length. The measured flame lengths were proportional to the kerosene fuel flow rate and increased with increasing temperature of the oxidizer stream. In addition, increases in the inert gas concentration in the oxidizer stream resulted in stretching of the flame. In particular, the flame was further elongated in the oxidizer steam diluted with helium gas. Inert substitutions in the oxidizer stream that can adjust the viscous drag are believed to be one of the important mechanisms that affect the length of the coaxial diffusion flames.

  • In order to separate the fuel-grade DME from the product of a direct DME synthesise reaction, containing 19~20% of DME, an absorption column and a purification column were employed. In the DME absorption column, the flow rate of the methanol required to recover more than 99% of DME at 50 bar was estimated by the correlation obtained from the lab-scale experiments. In the DME purification column, the maximum DME recovery of 98.2% could be obtained even from the side stream at the 3rd stage above the feed stage, since the feed stream originated from the product of the absorption column had already contained a large amount of DME (20~30 mol%) and only a small amount of light products such as $CO_2$ and $N_2$ (5~10 mol%).

  • This paper describes on the NOx/CO emission characteristics, temperature characteristics and flame structures when firing coal derived synthetic gas especially for gases of Buggenum and Taean IGCC. These combustion characteristics were observed by conducting ambient-pressure elevated-temperature combustion tests in GE7EA model combustor when varying heat input and nitrogen dilution ratio. Nitrogen addition caused decrement in adiabatic flame temperature, thus resulting in the NOx reduction. At low heat input condition, nitrogen dilution raised the CO emission dramatically due to incomplete combustion. These NOx reduction and CO arising phenomena were observed at certain flame temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$, respectively. As increasing nitrogen dilution, adiabatic flame temperature and combustor liner temperature were decreased and singular points were detected due to change in flame structure such as flame lifting. From the results, the effect of nitrogen dilution on the NOx/CO and flame structure was examined, and the test data will be utilized as a reference to achieve optimal operating condition of the Taean IGCC demonstration plant.

  • The effects of zeolite type catalysts addition on the thermal decomposition of low density polyethylene(LDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) resin have been studied in a thermal analyzer(TGA, DSC) and a small batch reactor. The zeolite type catalysts tested were natural zeolite, FCC catalyst, used FCC catalyst, and catalyst A. As the results of TGA experiments, addition of antifogging-agent decreased the pyrolysis point to $250^{\circ}C$, but addition of longevity-agent and clay reduced the pyrolysis rate in EVA resin. Addition of the zeolite type catalysts in the LDPE resin increased the pyrolysis rate in the order of catalyst A > used FCC catalyst > natural zeolite > LDPE resin. Addition of the zeolite type catalysts in the EVA resin increased the pyrolysis rate in the order of used FCC catalyst > natural zeolite > catalyst A > EVA resin. In the DSC experiments for LDPE resin, addition of zeolite type catalysts decreased the melting point and the heat of pyrolysis reaction in the order of catalyst A > used FCC catalyst > natural zeolite> LDPE resin. In the batch system experiments, the mixing of natural zeolite enhanced the yield of liquid fuel oil.

  • This paper describes experimental results about emission and NOx reduction of dilution effect (Nitrogen and carbon dioxide) about various fuel compositions of synthetic natural gas (SNG). Combustion experiment was performed to investigate the combustion characteristics for SNG with various hydrogen ratio in SNG, heat input and equivalence ratio in a partially premixed model gas turbine combustor. NOx emission was similar to each hydrogen ratio and flame characteristics was investigated from OH chemiluminescence images. There was a singularity of CO emission in stoichiometric condition and it can be identified using OH chemiluminescence intensity. In addition, dilution effect was studied in using nitrogen and carbon dioxide as diluent to reduce the NOx emission. Carbon dioxide diluent was more effective to NOx reduction than nitrogen diluent because of its high diluent specific heat and its heat capacity.
