Thermal Analysis of a Retrievable CANDU Spent Fuel Disposal Tunnel (회수 가능 CANDU 사용후핵연료 처분터널에 대한 열 해석)

  • Thermal assessment of a new CANDU spent fuel disposal system, which improves the retrievability of the spent fuel and enhances the densification factor compared with the Korean Reference disposal System, is carried out in this study. The canisters for CANDU spent fuels are stored for long term and cooled by natural convection in the proposed disposal system for the retrievability. The steady state thermal analyses for proposed CANDU disposal system are carried out with the ANSYS 10.0 CFX code. The thermal analyses are performed through two steps. At the first step, the sensitivity of the disposal tunnel spacing is analysed. The differences of maximum temperatures by several tunnel spacings are calculated at three points in the disposal tunnel. The result shows that the differences of the temperature at the three points are almost negligible because 99% of the decay heat is removed by natural convection. At the second procedure, 60m tunnel spacing with a ventilation system instead of natural convection is considered. The result is applied to the calculation of the canister surface temperature in disposal tunnel as boundary conditions. Consequently, the average and the maximum surface temperature of disposal canisters are $79.9^{\circ}C$ and $119^{\circ}C$, respectively. The inner maximum temperature of a basket in the disposal canister is calculated as $140.9^{\circ}C$. The maximum temperature of the basket meets the thermal requirement for the CANDU spent fuel cladding.

EcoMon: A System for Monitoring Eco-Driving (EcoMon: 에코 드라이빙 모니터링 시스템)

  • Since the advent of global warming and energy depletion, there has been great interest in eco-driving (energy-efficient driving). In this paper, a system is proposed to monitor the idle running of an engine and steady driving for a vehicle equipped with an ISG (Idling Stop & Go system). The system consists of a G/W device to acquire the vehicle operation data, a smartphone app for monitoring eco-driving and a server system. The main contribution of this paper is that it defines the integrated functions, the architecture and operation mechanisms of a system for monitoring eco-driving including the prohibition of running idle. The system enables the users to check the idling stop times, driving speeds, fuel savings, and $CO_2$ emissions, resulting in the driving style for eco-driving. The server system, which is a part of this system, provides OpenAPI-style web services for the storage and retrieval of car operation data, which facilitates the development of applications.

  • Although the effects of climate change are universal, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are considered to be most vulnerable. SIDS heavily rely on imported oil and fossil fuels for electricity generation and transportation, which makes them economically vulnerable and exposed to fluctuating oil price. Among the reasons SIDS highly depend on diesel fuel is due to the dispersed population living in remote islands which means, providing electricity through on on-grid system is difficult. Fiji as one of the SIDS, has actively promoted renewable sourced energy through a national plan to mitigate the impacts of climate change. In order to determine how feasible implementing a renewable energy (RE) system will be in Fiji, this study chose a remote island called Mavuva Island to test application of a hybrid RE system using HOMER. A combination of energy storage system (ESS), solar photovoltaic (PV) and diesel generator turns out to be the most cost effective and optimal configuration, resulting in effective greenhouse gas reduction for the given region.

  • In this paper, the liquid oxygen filling system (LOXFS) of the launch complex system of Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II (KSLV-II) is introduced based on critical design result by KARI in 2015 to 2016. The function and specification of the main systems of the liquid oxygen filling system, such as the storage tank, the drainage tank, the supply pumping system, the curved heat exchanger with liquid nitrogen, end valve block system, and umbilical connection, are presented.

  • 아직까지 국내에서 사용하는 대부분의 에너지는 화석연료에 의존하고 있다. 지하자원에서 나오는 석탄, 석유와 같은 화석연료는 다른 에너지원에 비해 운송이 간편하고 쉽게 이용할 수 있는 장점이 있지만, 환경오염의 문제성과 오일가상승, 자원의양 및 저장장소가 한정되어 있다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 이에 따라 수소와 같은 대체에너지를 이용하여 환경오염을 예방하고 무한히 사용할 수 있는 에너지원을 개발하기 위한 대체 방안들이 연구되고 있다. 폐기물 가스화시 발생되는 합성가스(CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, $H_2$) 내 일차로 생성된 일산화탄소는 수증기와 반응함으로써 이산화탄소로 전환이 가능하다. 잔류 메탄은 이산화탄소를 이용하여 개질함으로써 합성가스내 수소농도를 높일 수 있다. 전환된 잔류가스(CO, $CO_2$, $H_2$)내 일산화탄소는 산소를 이용하여 이산화탄소로 산화시킬 수 있으며, 산화된 이산화탄소는 흡착제를 이용하여 제거가 가능하다. 본 연구에서는 실제 가스화시 발생되는 합성가스를 이용하기 위하여, RPF가스화시 발생되는 합성가스를 직접 포집하여 실험을 진행하였다. 합성가스내 소량의 메탄은 니켈촉매를 이용하여 수소로 전화시켰으며, 잔류하는 일산화탄소는 백금촉매, 이산화탄소는 탄산나트륨 흡착제를 이용하여 연속적으로 제거함으로써 순수한 수소를 제공하였다.

The Impact Analysis of the Leakage Scenario in the Tank of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vessel (수소연료전지선박의 탱크 내 누출시나리오에 따른 영향분석)

  • As an alternative to environmental pollution generated from fossil fuels currently in use, research is being actively conducted to use hydrogen that does not cause air pollution. As fire and explosion accidents caused by hydrogen leakage have occurred until recently, research on safety is needed to commercialize hydrogen on ships, which are special environments. In this study, a seasonal alternative scenario for each season and the worst scenario were assumed in the event of a leakage accident while a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion ship equipped with a hydrogen storage tank was navigating at JangSaengPo port in Ulsan. In order to consider environmental variables, the damage impact range was derived through ALOHA and probit analysis based on the annual average weather data for 2021 by the Korea Meteorological Administration and on geographic information data from the National Statistical Office. Radiation showed a wider damage range than that of Overpressure and Flame in both the alternative and worst-case scenarios, and as a result of probit analysis, a fatality rate of 99% was confirmed in all areas.

Review for Applying Spent Fuel Pool Island (SFPI) during Decommissioning in Korea (원전해체시 독립된 사용후핵연료저장조 국내 적용 검토)

  • In many nuclear power plant sites in Korea, high density storage racks were installed in the spent fuel pool to expand the spent fuel storage capacity. Nevertheless, the capability of the Hanbit nuclear site will be saturated by 2024. Also, 10 NPPs will reach their design life expiration date by 2029. In the case of the US, SFPI (Spent Fuel Pool Island) operated temporarily as a spent fuel storage option before spent nuclear fuels were transported to an interim storage facility or a final disposal facility. As a spent fuel storage option after shutdown during decommissioning, the SFPI concept can be expected to have the following effects: reduced occupational exposure, lower cost of operation, strengthened safety, and so on. This paper presents a case study associated with the regulations, operating experiences, and systems of SFPI in the US. In conclusion, the following steps are recommended for applying SFPI during decommissioning in Korea: confirmation of design change scope of SFPI and expected final cost, the submission of a decommissioning plan which is reflected in SFPI improvement plans, safety assessment using PSR, application of an operating license change for design change, regulatory body review and approval, design change, inspection by the regulatory body, education and commissioning for SFPI, SFPI operation and periodic inspection, and dismantling of SFPI.

  • Fuel cell vehicles are equipped with Pressure Relief Devices(PRDs) installed in pressure tank cylinder to prevent the explosion of the tank during a fire. PRDs are safety devices that perceive a fire and release gas in the pressure tank cylinder before it is exploded. But if the PRD does not actuate, because either the PRD fails or can't be surrounded by the flame of a fire, the tank will rupture and produce a blast wave and hydrogen fire ball. In this paper, we observed the fire behavior of actual fuel cell vehicle, comparing with that of gasoline vehicle.

  • This paper proposes a modeling method and operating algorithm of an islanding microgrid that is composed of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), wind turbine and diesel generator applied in island areas. Initially, the bilateral AC/DC converter was designed for charge/discharge for frequency and voltage to be maintained within the proper ranges according to the load and weather change, and the operating method was proposed for a diesel generator to operate when power supply from the wind turbine or BESS is insufficient. The proposed modeling and controller design method of BESS was applied to a typical islanded microgrid with a wind turbine and diesel generator. The frequency and voltage was kept within the permissible ranges and the proposed method was proven to be appropriate through simulations.

  • 석유 등 화석연료로 인한 지구온난화 문제와 더불어 일본 대지진 이후 원자력발전의 안전에 의문이 제기 되면서 신재생에너지에 대한 관심이 한층 고조되고 있다. 이에 발맞추어 국가정책으로 녹색성장 정책이 실행됨에 따라 2030년까지 전체 에너지원 중 신에너지전원의 비중을 전체 에너지원의 11%로 확대하는 정책을 적극적으로 추진하고 있다. 따라서 신재생에너지를 통하여 얻은 전기에너지를 저장하여 사용 할 수 있는 2차 전지에 대한 연구가 다수의 산업 현장에서 각광을 받고 있다. 최근 2차 전지는 Smart Grid 및 전기자동차분야에서 폭넓게 사용 되면서 정확한 출력전압, SOC 및 충-방전 예상 시간을 추정하여 2차 전지의 과충전, 과방전으로 인하여 생기는 고장 및 사고를 미연에 방지하고 2차 전지 사용 시 편의성을 제공하기 위한 시스템에 대한 연구가 필요한 실정이다. 본 논문은 이런 실정에 맞추어 LabVIEW 프로그램을 활용하여 2차 전지의 상태를 실시간으로 감시 및 제어하는 프로그램을 제작함으로써, 사고 시 2차 전지에 가해지는 피해 방지 및 관리 시 발생하는 여러 문제점에 대한 효율적인 해결 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
