A simulation study on operation strategy of residential fuel cell system for cost curtailment (운전비용 절감을 위한 가정용 연료전지 시스템의 운전전략 수립)

  • Residential fuel cell cogeneration systems have gained much interest due to its high efficiency. In this study, we have performed numerical simulation of residential fuel cell cogeneration system which includes a fuel cell/grid hybrid system. The cogeneration system consists of 1kW PEFC, cooling system, inverter/converter and reformer. Several empirical models have been employed for respective components to improve the accuracy of the simulations. The load varies seasonally. The present simulations can successfully predict the characteristics of the hybrid cogeneration system and thus it can be utilized for establishing an optimal operating strategy of the system.

  • 본 논문에서는 Charge double layer 현상과 전압강하/회복 현상을 구현한 연료전지의 동특성 모델링을 수행하고 실험결과와 비교 분석하였다. Charge double layer 현상의 이론을 분석하고 수식을 통해 구현한 모델링과 물리적 지연 현상을 실험을 통해 확인하여 특성을 전압강하와 회복현상을 표현하는 모델링을 수행하였다. 또한, 시뮬레이션 결과를 각각 실험결과와 비교 분석하여 실제 연료전지를 구현할 때에는 제안한 모델에서의 전압강하와 회복현상을 고려해야 함을 검증하였다.

  • In case of residential fuel cell system, it is significant to stably supply heat and power to a house with high efficiency and low cost for the successful commercialization. In this paper, the control strategy analysis has been performed to minimize the total cost including capital and operating cost of the residential fuel cell system. The proposed analysis methodology is based on the simulator including the efficiency models as well as the cost data for fuel cell components. The load control strategy is the key factor to decide the system efficiency and thus the cost analysis is performed when the fuel cell system is operated for several different load control logics. Additionally, annual efficiency of the system based on the seasonal load data is calculated since system efficiency is changeable according to the electric and heat demand change. As a result, the hybrid load control combined electricity oriented control and heat oriented control has the most economical operation.

  • A numerical model is developed to predict distributions of current density and temperature. Also the complete fuel cell performances were compared. In this study the effect of flow field design and flow direction on current density and temperature distribution as well as full cell performance. The complete three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations were solved with convergence of electro-chemical reactions terms. In this paper, the two different flow field design were simulated, straight channel and rectangular serpentine flow channel, which is commonly used. The effect of flow direction, co-flow and counter-flow, was also analyzed. The current density and temperature is higher with abundant oxygen not fuel. Also, temperature distribution was able to be drawn by using computer simulation. In this paper, the relationship among flow pattern, flow field design and current denstity distribution.

Numerical Modeling of Physical Property and Electrochemical Reaction for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (고체 산화물 연료전지를 위한 물성치 및 전기화학반응의 수치해석 모델링)

  • Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are commonly composed of ceramic compartments, and it is known that the physical properties of the ceramic materials can be changed according to the operating temperature. Thus, the physical properties of the ceramic materials have to be properly predicted to develop a highly reliable simulation model. In this study, several physical properties that can affect the performance of SOFCs were selected, and simulation models for those physical properties were developed using our own code. The Gibbs free energy for the open circuit voltage, exchange current densities for the activation polarization, and electrical conductivity for the electrolyte were calculated. In addition, the diffusion coefficient-including the binary and Knudsen diffusion mechanisms-was calculated for mass transport analysis at the porous electrode. The physical property and electrochemical reaction models were then simulated simultaneously. The numerical results were compared with the experimental results and previous works studied by Chan et al. for code validation.

  • This Paper focuses on modeling and simulation to analyze the characteristic of hybrid vehicle. The system includes proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC), photovoltaic generator(PV), lead-acid battery, motor, vehicle and controller. Main electricity is produced by the PEMFC and battery to meet the requirements of a user load. When vehicle is parked in a sunny place, extra power is generated by the photovotaics and is charged in a battery for next drive. Further we evaluate usefulness of this hybrid vehicle by using ADVISOR - the advanced vehicle simulator written in the Matlab/Simulink environment. According to simulation results, the extra power obtained by photovoltaics which have been explored in nature conditions can help to reduce the electrical load of PEMFC and increase the efficiency (over 30%).

  • 친환경에너지원인 연료전지시스템에서 구조상 발생되는 문제점인 발전기와 같은 동작 특성과 느린 동특성으로 에너지를 저장할 수 있는 능력이 없다. 이를 보안하고자 400V급 승압형 풀브릿지 컨버터와 수퍼커패시터를 이용한 양방향 하프브릿지 컨버터를 적용하여 부하에 따른 낮은 출력전압을 승압하고 연료전지시스템 특성상 느린 동특성과 부하에 따른 출력변동을 슈퍼 커패시터를 이용하여 빠르게 충 방전함으로써 연료전지시스템으로도 상용전원과 같은 시스템에 적용 가능함을 시뮬레이션을 통하여 검증하였다.

  • In this paper, a mathematical modeling was developed to simulate 1kW class air cooled Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) system. The proposed modeling was conducted under SIMULINK based environment. The model ing was developed based on the thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium. The objective is to design and implement the entire fuel cell system model ing including the system controller modeling. The fuel cell process and the control system modeling should have to be connected with each other simultaneously, therefore the two types of modeling influences each other when the system simulator run. The fuel cell modeling libraries are simulated using the SIMULINK under the thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium base. The PID controller application was designed and developed to test the process modeling and verify it. This the prototype development of the fuel cell system to design and test more complicate fuel cell systems, like the residential power generation system. The simulation results was compared to the real PEMFC system performance. We have achieved the reasonable accordance with the Lab test and the simulation results.

  • In this study, a dynamic simulation model of a heavy-duty truck, equipped with a fuel cell power-train, has been developed and the dynamic behavior of the fuel cell stack has bee investigated using. Output change simulations were performed according to several drive cycle load change of a fuel cell truck. Mathworks' Simulink and Simscape program were used to develop the model. The model is comprised of fuel cell power train, power converter system and truck vehicle part. The vehicle runs at targeted speed of the truck, which is set as the load of the system. The dynamic behavior of the fuel cell stack according to the weight difference were analyzed, and based on this, the dynamic characteristics of the fuel cell output power and battery state with simple load was analyzed.

  • 일반적으로 PEM 연료전지에서는 수분 균형이 시스템의 효율에 결정적으로 영향을 미치기 때문에, 이에 대한 균형(balance)을 잡는 것이 매우 중요하다. 특히, 촉매 층에서 물이 넘치는 익수현상(flooding)이나 건조현상(drying)이 발생하게 되면 연료전지의 효율이 급격하게 저하하므로, 항상 수분의 균형이 잡히도록 시스템을 제어하는 것이 일반적이다. 이 때,수분의 익수현상이나 건조현상은 PEM 연료전지의 용량과 주위의 환경, 즉 온도와 습도에 많은 영향을 받게 된다. 금번 논문에서는 가정용 규모인 3kW급에서 10kW급까지의 PEM 연료전지를 설치하였을 때, 주위의 환경(온도와 습도)이 수분 이동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 시간에 따라서 시뮬레이션(simulation)한 결과를 보여주고 있다. 결과에서 유입공기의 온도가 $50^{\circ}C$ 이하일 경우, 고정부하가 5kW급 이하이면 대부분이 건조현상이 발생하였으나, 고정부하가 6kW급 이상이 되면 익수현상이 운전시간이 20분 이내에서 발생하였다. 또한 고정부하를 최고 10kW급까지 올린 경우, 유입공기의 온도가 $50^{\circ}C$까지는 익수현상이 발생하였으나 $60^{\circ}C$ 이상인 경우에는 거의 건조현상이 발생함을 알 수 있었다.
