Structural Safety Assessment of a Sunken Ship Considering Hull Corrosion and Damaged Members - Focus on the Sunken Ship 'No. 7 HaeSung' - (선체 부식 및 손상 부재를 고려한 침몰선박의 구조 안전성 평가에 관한 연구 - 제7 해성호를 중심으로 -)

  • Sunken ships cause damage to the environment due to the dispersal of fuel oil and harmful cargo goods in the hull. Since the sunken ship is mostly flooded by the seabed, it tends to be in a relatively stable condition. However, the heavy body, together with the load of remaining goods in the cargo hold, the constant contact with the seabed, and ocean currents and tidal waves, can affect dispersal of residual fuel oils out of the sunken ship. Corrosion of the sunken ship starts upon sinking, decreasing the thickness of the hull structure and sub-materials. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the structural stability against the potential breakdown of the sunken ship. Whilst evaluating the danger of the sunken ship, this result should be reflected in 'the possible discharge'. This study was undertaken to suggest a procedure for a step by step evaluation to assess the structural stability a sunken ship. The structural stability assessment to estimate the collapsibility of the hull was structure targeted at the sunken ship 'No. 7 HaeSung', which was classified as the prime example for the intensive management of sunken ships. The collapsibility of the hull structure was estimated Based on the damage size of the hull structure, and the corrosion rate of the hull structure and sub-materials due to the seawater after sinking. It was confirmed that there was a low possibility of the total destruction of the hull structure at the current time. However, there is a high possibility in the potential failure of the hull structure due to increased rate of corrosion thereafter. Therefore, we believe continuous study on influence of corrosion and marine environment change to sunken ship's structural safety is necessary.

A Case Study and Analysis of the Causes for Natural Gas Vehicle Accidents (천연가스자동차 사고사례 및 원인분석)

  • I collected the cases of CNG vehicle accidents which had happened for 30 years and analyzed the causes of the accidents according to each type of cylinders. There are about six accidents including three cylinder explosion accidents due to bad heat treatment, one composite damage, one CNG vehicle fire, and one fuel piping accident owing to the poor maintenance. When looking into the cylinder types involved in the accidents and the causes, 29% of the cylinder accidents are Type I and 24% Type IV, 16% Type II, and 14% Type III. 37% of the accidents are caused by the defects of the raw materials and the errors of a manufacturing process, 16% by the stress corrosion cracking as a result of the repetitive use, 15% by the cylinder's explosion on account of the malfunction of PRD(Pressure Relief Device) and the overpressure. The remainders of the causes are fire and unknown causes. Therefore, cylinder manufacturers have to strengthen quality management of raw materials and manufacturing process and painting regardless of each type of cylinder. Also bus operators need to make an effort to keep safety condition through every day check.

  • A tip-over test of the 1/3 scale model is conducted to verify the tip-oner analysis of a dry concrete storage cask under a hypothetical accident condition. The tip-oner analysis is executed using the velocity at each point which are determined from the initial angular velocity as the initial conditions of the model just before the impact. To confirm the structural integrity of the canister of a dry concrete storage cask, the non-detective testing such as Liquid Penetrants testing and Ultrasonic Testing are conducted. The strains and tile accelerations acquired by the tip-over test are compared with those by the analysis to verify the tip-over analysis.   • Silica in primary system combines with an alkali grammatical particle metal and forms the zeolite layer which is hindering the heat transfer on the surface of the cladding. Zeolite layer becomes the cause of the damage in this way. The problems of the NPP's primary system have been issued steadily by EPRI. Through a series of experiments of the laboratory scale, we confirmed the applicability of NF membrane for silica removal, as silica rejection rate of NF membrane is about $60\;{\sim}\;70\%$ and boron rejection rate is about $10\;{\sim}\;20\%$. We accomplished a site experiment about four NF membranes manufactured by FilmTec and Osmonics Inc. In experiment using 400L of SFP water, when operation pressure is $10kg_{f}/cm^2$, we confirmed that the silica rejection rate of NF90-2540 manufactured by FilmTec Inc. is about $98\%$, boron rejection rate is about $43\%$. The silica rejection rate of NF270-2540 is about $38\%$, boron rejection rate is about $3.5\%$. Afterward, through additional experiments, such as long term characteristic experiments, we are going to design a optimum NF membrane system for silica removal.

  • The performance of the turbofan engine, a medium scale civil aircraft which has been developing in Rep. of Korea, was analyzed and the control scheme for optimization the performance was studied. The dynamic and real-time linear simulation was performed in the previous study The result was that the fuel scedule of the step increase overshoot the limit temperature(3105 $^{\cire}R$) of the high pressure turbine and got small surge margine of the high pressure compressor. Therefore a control scheme such as the LQR(Linear Quadratic Regulator) was applied to optimizing the performance in this studies. The linear model was expected for designing controller and the real time linear model was developed to be closed to nonlinear simulation results. The system matrices were derived from sampling operating points in the scheduled range and then the least square method was applied to the interpolation between these sampling points, where each element of matrices was a function of the rotor speed. The control variables were the fuel flow and the low pressure compressor bleed air. The controlled linear model eliminated the inlet temperature overshoot of the high pressure turbine and obtained maximum surge margins within 0.55. The SFC was stabilized in the range of 0.355 to 0.43.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) is an effective nondestructive test that uses transient elastic wave generated by the rapid release of energy within a material to detect any further growth or expansion of existing defects. Over the past decades, because of environmental issues, the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel for vehicles is increasing because of environmental issues. For this reason, the importance and necessity of detecting defects on a CNG fuel tank has also come to the fore. The conventional AE method used for source location is highly affected by the wave speed on the structure, and this creates problems in inspecting a composite CNG fuel tank. Because the speed and dispersion characteristics of the wave are different according to direction of structure and laminated layers. In this study, both the conventional AE method and the energy based contour map method were used for source location. This new method based on pre-acquired D/B was used for overcoming the limitation of damage localization in a composite CNG fuel tank specimen which consists of a steel liner cylinder overwrapped by GFRP. From the experimental results, it is observed that the damage localization is determined with a small error at all tested points by using the energy based contour map method, while there were a number of mis-locations or large errors at many tested points by using the conventional AE method. Therefore, the energy based contour map method used in this work is more suitable technology for inspecting composite structures.

  • Characteristics of GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer) mainly determine the gas diffusion and water removal in a cell, thereby changing the performance and affecting durability of PEFC. To optimize the water management and understand the two phase flow in a GDL, it is important to study the behaviors of GDL micro structure under the real operating condition. In the clamped condition of cell, the GDL beneath the rib is more compressed than beneath the channel. Many researches on physical, electrochemical, mechanical behaviors of gas diffusion layer has been conducted. However, changes in surface properties under clamped condition have rarely studied. In present study, the morphology of broken connections of carbon fibers and detachment of PTFE coatings on the fibers were shown from the microscopic observations. In addition, changes in wetting properties of GDL by compression were investigated by using XPS and liquid uptake methods. The hydrophobic characteristics of GDL surface beneath the rib of the flow field plate are changed due to the deformation of micro structure.

  • The purpose of this paper analyzes and studies to improve the failure cases on the computer that one of electronic control elements for engine in liquified petroleum gas vehicle. The first case, it certified the non-starting phenomenon of engine that it's electronic control unit didn't control the fuel for idle speed actuator because of no given action signal in slow-cut solenoid valve. The second case, it knew the bad condition phenomenon of engine and back-fire by the wire melting of ignition coil and firing of transistor being inside ECU. The third case, it certified the action stoping phenomenon of engine and malfunctioning signal for engine ECU because of leakage of current and an excess current by moisture inflowing inside ECU curcuit plate. Therefore, it is thought that will elevate the durability and reliability of engine computer throughout procure of quality.

  • Explosion range and explosion characteristics of by product gas from carbon black manufacturing process were studied. About 75% of the by product gas were composed with water vapour and nitrogen. And the combustible component in the gas were hydrogen, methane, acetylene and carbon mono-oxide. Because of the combustible components in the by product gas there are explosion hazards in the gas handling process. Explosion range of the gas by experiment was from 17.1% to 70.7% and the value has considerable difference with the calculated value from Lechatelier law. Explosion pressure of the gas was $5.4kg/cm^2$ and the average explosion pressure rise rate was $39.2kg/cm^2/s$. Based on the experimental result we can expect that a explosion or fire accident during the handling the gas can make a severe loss, therefore there should be a explosion prevention or protection measures in the gas handling process.

  • 섬유산업은 원가 경쟁력 향상과 산업 고도화에 필요한 미래형 저에너지 염색가공 핵심 기술을 통한 고부가가치 섬유제품의 창출과 섬유산업의 선진화달성에 꾸준히 노력을 해 왔다. 염색가공업의 에너지 소비는 섬유산업에서 염색가공업이 연료 사용량의 77%, 전기사용량의 54%를 차지하여 섬유산업의 에너지절감을 위해서는 염색가공 공정에서의 에너지 절감이 가장 중요하다. 국내 염색가공 분야의 4백여 업체를 대상으로 실시한 애로 기술에 관한 설문 조사결과에 따르면 염색공업의 에너지 절약형 구조로의 전환을 위해서 가장 시급히 요구되는 우선기술 1순위는 에너지절약형 염색가공 공정기술로 에너지 절감의 필요성을 반영하고 있다. 효소(Enzyme)가 섬유산업에 도입되기 시작한 것은 면섬유의 호발에 아밀라제가 사용되기 시작하면서 부터이며, 최근 유럽선진국들의 강화된 환경규제와 눈부신 바이오테크놀러지(Biotechnology)의 발전에 기인하여 섬유산업에서 관심과 적용이 확대되고 있다. 섬유산업에서 효소적용의 장점은 효소 그 자체가 자연산물이기 때문에 생분해 되고 중성에 가까운 pH에서 반응하므로 처리액이 환경문제를 일으키지 않으며, 기질특이성을 가져 매우 선택적으로 반응하여 부반응으로 인한 섬유의 손상을 최소화 하는 효과를 들 수 있으며, 무엇보다 소량 저온반응으로 인한 에너지절감이 가장 큰 장점이라 할 수 있다. 실제 섬유산업에서는 전분호제를 제거하는 아밀라아제, 데님워싱 및 면섬유의 후가공에 사용하는 셀룰라아제, 표백 후 잔류하는 과산화수소를 제거하는 카탈라제 등을 적용하는 사례가 많아지고 있으며, 이 밖의 다양한 공정에 효소 이용연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 그 동안 섬유 업체에서 직물의 표면 잔털을 제거하여 매끄러운 외관과 선명한 색상을 재현하기위해 후가공으로 셀룰라아제를 이용했던 공정을 개선하여, 효소를 이용한 정련-Bio polishing-염색의 3공정을 1욕처리를 통해 기존 단독으로 진행되어진 기존제품과의 중량, 외관, 색상재현성, 정련성 등을 비교하여 에너지 절약형 공정기술의 효과를 극대화 해보았다.
