  • As Internet users increasingly consume news through the Internet, Internet portals face criticism that they are quickening the softening of public news and molding public opinions. Some portals have started to provide newscast services that directly connect the press, not grouping news sources on their own standards. This study aims to clarify how news grouping models and newscast models are different in terms of news softening and agenda setting. Specifically, authors conduct a content analysis on time-specific news content provided by top three portals-Naver, Daum, and Nate. By doing so, this study examines characteristics of news service models of Internet portals and their social and political implications. According to our study, the softening and tabloidization of portal news had not been improved even after adopting the newscast model. Therefore, portal journalism should be reorganized as a way to circulate healthy and qualified news content.

  • This study aims to understand topics of incivility related to COVID-19 from analyzing Twitter posts including COVID-19-related hate speech. To achieve the goal, a total of 63,802 tweets that were created between December 1st, 2019, and August 31st, 2021, covering three targets of hate speech including region and public facilities, groups of people, and religion were analyzed. Frequency analysis, dynamic topic modeling, and keyword co-occurrence network analysis were used to explore topics and keywords. 1) Results of frequency analysis revealed that hate against regions and public facilities showed a relatively increasing trend while hate against specific groups of people and religion showed a relatively decreasing trend. 2) Results of dynamic topic modeling analysis showed keywords of each of the three targets of hate speech. Keywords of the region and public facilities included "Daegu, Gyeongbuk local hate", "interregional hate", and "public facility hate"; groups of people included "China hate", "virus spreaders", and "outdoor activity sanctions"; and religion included "Shincheonji", "Christianity", "religious infection", "refusal of quarantine", and "places visited by confirmed cases". 3) Similarly, results of keyword co-occurrence network analysis revealed keywords of three targets: region and public facilities (Corona, Daegu, confirmed cases, Shincheonji, Gyeongbuk, region); specific groups of people (Coronavirus, Wuhan pneumonia, Wuhan, China, Chinese, People, Entry, Banned); and religion (Corona, Church, Daegu, confirmed cases, infection). This study attempted to grasp the public's anti-citizenship public opinion related to COVID-19 by identifying domestic COVID-19 hate targets and keywords using social media. In particular, it is meaningful to grasp public opinion on incivility topics and hate emotions expressed on social media using data mining techniques for hate-related to COVID-19, which has not been attempted in previous studies. In addition, the results of this study suggest practical implications in that they can be based on basic data for contributing to the establishment of systems and policies for cultural communication measures in preparation for the post-COVID-19 era.

  • This study investigated how many and which articles readers read in daily newspapers. Distinguished from previous research that measured readers' perception of their reading habits, this study picked up readers who read the newspaper in the morning, showed them every article in the newspaper, and asked them whether they read each article. This method enhanced the accuracy of measuring subjects‘ reading behavior. According to the results, 6.2% of the readers read at least half of the articles of the general section in the newspaper. Fewer readers went over the economic section of the newspaper. It was 4.1% of the readers. There were only 1.1% of readers who did not read any article of the general section, but the rate soared to 26.5% for the economic section. Many newspaper readers did not skip the first five pages of the newspaper, however the highest readership pages were found in the national coverage located in the middle of the general section. On the other hand, few readers read the articles on pages covering culture, international issues, and people. Readership of the top stories showed some unexpected results. The top stories of national coverage located in the middle of the general section were read by more readers than the top stories of the front pages. This study also investigated the difference between young and old readers. The readers of twenties and thirties did not read as many top stories on major pages and editorials as the readers of forties and older.

  • This paper is designed to study how public values of viewers impact on the necessity of public service broadcasters and the willingness to payment of TV license fee based on the public-opinion survey regarding raising KBS TV license fee which was submitted to the National Assembly in 2013. To investigate this influence, seven main projects presented by KBS are classified into five public values of public (service) broadcasters such as quality, diversity, universality, social value and global value. The seven key performance tasks were presented by KBS. The study results are summarized as follows. Firstly, the survey group who selected the digital welfare enlargement by free terrestrial multi-channel broadcasting among public values recognized as highest the necessity of public service broadcasting as the most highly. Secondly, regarding the question of raising license fee, 72.4 percent of respondents were in favor of 1,000 won and 43.9 percent of respondents were in favor of 1,500 won. The result of this study shows that public service broadcasting has the possibility of securing the legitimacy of license fee policy when public service broadcasters faithfully carry out the five public values as above.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore ways in which the flower design industry can utilize podcasts that are rapidly growing in recent years. I selected foreign flower podcasts that are ranked on the global podcast chart, and examined the genre, content, components, show hosts and etc. By analyzing the characteristics of the podcast, the type of communication between the host and the audience, the audience interaction, the industry connection, and the media expansion strategy, I tried to derive the possibility of the flower podcast in Korea. As a result of analyzing foreign flower podcasts, podcasters built listener communities based on their rich experience and knowledge through podcasts and used them for education and marketing. They acted as leaders in the industry or led public opinion such as the sustainable flower industry. Podcast shows were repurposed as various content and used to spread flower design culture. In Korea, flower podcasts can be the basis for the formation of a community related to the flower design industry. Flower design experts can use podcasts as a source asset for various content. Listeners within the industry can get hands-on knowledge about the business from flower podcasts. The popular flower podcast will contribute to the vitalization of flower design culture and industry. Flower podcasts can be a starting point to actively cope with the era of personal media.

  • This study analyzes newly listed companies on KOSDAQ from 2011 to 2020 for both firms having experience in attracting venture investment before listing (VI) and those without having experience in attracting venture investment (NVI) by examining differences between two groups (VI and NVI) with respect to both the level of listing performance and that of firm performance (growth) after the listing. This paper conducts descriptive statistics, mean difference, and multiple regression analysis. Independent variables for regression models include VC investment, firm age at the time of listing, firm type, firm location, firm size, the age of VC, the level of expertise of VC, and the level of fitness of VC with investment company. Throughout this paper, results suggest that listing performance and post-listed growth are better for VI than NVI. VC investment shows a negative effect on the listing period and a positive effect on the sales growth rate. Also, the amount of VC investment has negative effects on the listing period and positive effects on the market capitalization at the time of IPO and on sales growth among growth indicators. Our evidence also implies a significantly positive effect on growth after listing for firms which belong to R&D specialized industries. In addition, it is statistically significant for several years that the firm age has a positive effect on the market capitalization growth rate. This shows that market seems to put the utmost importance on a long-term stability of management capability. Finally, among the VC characteristics such as the age of VC, the level of expertise of VC, and the level of fitness of VC with investment company, we point out that a higher market capitalization tends to be observed at the time of IPO when the level of expertise of anchor VC is high. Our paper differs from prior research in that we reexamine the venture ecosystem under the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 which stimulates the degradation of the business environment. In addition, we introduce more effective variables such as VC investment amount when examining the effect of firm type. It enables us to indirectly evaluate the validity of technology exception policy. Although our findings suggest that related policies such as the technology special listing system or the injection of funds into the venture ecosystem are still helpful, those related systems should be updated in a more timely fashion in order to support growth power of firms due to the rapid technological development. Furthermore, industry specialization is essential to achieve regional development, and the growth of the recovery market is also urgent.
