Robust Facial Expression Recognition Based on Signed Local Directional Pattern (Signed Local Directional Pattern을 이용한 강력한 얼굴 표정인식)

  • In this paper, we proposed a new local micro pattern, Signed Local Directional Pattern(SLDP). SLDP uses information of edges to represent the face's texture. This can produce a more discriminating and efficient code than other state-of-the-art methods. Each micro pattern of SLDP is encoded by sign and its major directions in which maximum edge responses exist-which allows it to distinguish among similar edge patterns that have different intensity transitions. In this paper, we divide the face image into several regions, each of which is used to calculate the distributions of the SLDP codes. Each distribution represents features of the region and these features are concatenated into a feature vector. We carried out facial expression recognition with feature vectors and SVM(Support Vector Machine) on Cohn-Kanade and JAFFE databases. SLDP shows better classification accuracy than other existing methods.

Fast Extraction of Edge Histogram in DCT Domain based on MPEG-7 (MPEG-7 기반 DCT영역에서의 에지히스토그램 고속 추출 기법)

  • In these days, multimedia data is transmitted and processed in compressed format. Due to the decoding procedure and filtering for edge detection, the feature extraction process of MPEG-7 Edge Histogram Descriptor (EHD) is time consuming as well as computationally expensive. To improve efficiency of compressed image retrieval, we propose a new edge histogram generation algorithm in DCT domain in this paper. Using the edge information provided by the only two AC coefficients of DCT coefficients, we can get edge directions and strengths directly in DCT domain. The experimental results demonstrate that our system has good performance in terms of retrieval efficiency and effectiveness.

An efficient Color Edge Fuzzy Interpolation Method for improving a Chromatic Aberration (색수차 개선을 위한 효율적인 컬러 에지 퍼지 보간 방법)

  • Each pixels become got pixel value for color of only one from among colors because of bayer pattern that light receiving device of image sensor which is used in HHP and digital camera writes only one color. Information of the missing pixels could infer perfect color image from using information of neighbor pixels by using CFA(Color Filter Array). In this paper, we derive relation between the average of the data from the light receiving device of image sensor and each color channel data. And by using this relation, a new efficient edge color fuzzy method for color interpolation is proposed. Also, missing luminance signal channel interpolation was fuzzy interpolation along any edges direction for reducing color noise and interpolating efficiently it. And in this paper, the proposed method has been proved improving average 2.4dB than the conventional method by using PSNR. Also, resolution of the image of the proposed method was similar to the original image by visual images, we has been verified to be decreased a chromatic aberration than image of conventional algorithms with simulation result.

Detection of Various Sized Car Number Plates using Edge-based Region Growing (에지 기반 영역확장 기법을 이용한 다양한 크기의 번호판 검출)

  • Conventional approaches for car number plate detection have dealt with those input images having similar sizes and simple background acquired under well organized environment. Thus their performance get reduced when input images include number plates with different sizes and when they are acquired under different lighting conditions. To solve these problem, this paper proposes a new scheme that uses the geometrical features of number plates and their topological information with reference to other features of the car. In the first step, those edges constructing a rectangle are detected and several pixels neighboring those edges are selected as the seed pixels for region growing. For region growing, color and intensity are used as the features, and the result regions are merged to construct the candidate for a number plate if their features are within a certain boundary. Once the candidates for the number plates are generated then their topological relations with other parts of the car such as lights are tested to finally determine the number plate region. The experimental results have shown that the proposed method can be used even for detecting small size number plates where characters are not visible.

Skew Correction of Document Images using Edge (에지를 이용한 문서영상의 기울기 보정)

  • This paper proposes an algorithm detecting the skew of the degraded as well as the clear document images using edge and correcting it. The proposed algorithm detects edges in a character region selected by image complexity and generates projection histograms by projecting them to various directions. And then it detects the document skew by estimating the edge concentrations in the histograms and corrects the skewed document image. For the fast skew detection, the proposed algorithm uses downsampling and 3 step coarse-to-fine searching. In the skew detection of the clear and the degraded images, the maximum and the average detection errors in the proposed algorithm are about 50% of one in a conventional similar algorithm and the processing time is reduced to about 25%. In the non-uniform luminance images acquired by a mobile device, the conventional algorithm can't detect skews since it can't get valid binary images, while the proposed algorithm detect them with the average detection error of 0.1o or under.

Head Pose Estimation with Accumulated Historgram and Random Forest (누적 히스토그램과 랜덤 포레스트를 이용한 머리방향 추정)

  • As smart environment is spread out in our living environments, the needs of an approach related to Human Computer Interaction(HCI) is increases. One of them is head pose estimation. it related to gaze direction estimation, since head has a close relationship to eyes by the body structure. It's a key factor in identifying person's intention or the target of interest, hence it is an essential research in HCI. In this paper, we propose an approach for head pose estimation with pre-defined several directions by random forest classifier. We use canny edge detector to extract feature of the different facial image which is obtained between input image and averaged frontal facial image for extraction of rotation information of input image. From that, we obtain the binary edge image, and make two accumulated histograms which are obtained by counting the number of pixel which has non-zero value along each of the axes. This two accumulated histograms are used to feature of the facial image. We use CAS-PEAL-R1 Dataset for training and testing to random forest classifier, and obtained 80.6% accuracy.

  • Image processing is being hailed as an important field with various applications as the digital information era advances. In particular, studies on methods to remove noise from images are being actively undertaken. This paper suggests an image restoration filter that processes through a weighted filter in accordance with the direction of partial masks to preserve edge while replacing the noise in the images with neighboring pixels. The PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) was used as a tool to objectively judge the improvement effects compared to existing methods.

  • Currently, image processing has been widely utilized and the noise may be occurred in the processes of image data transmission, processing, and storage. The studies have been actively conducted to eliminate the added noise in the image. The types of noise in the image are various depending on the causes and the forms, and additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) is the representative one. The algorithm to apply and process the weighted value was suggested by the directions of the pixel in the local mask using edge detection to relieve the added AWGN in the image in this article.

  • Pixel classification is one of basic issues of image processing. The general characteristics of the pixels belonging to various classes are discussed and the radical principles of pixel classification are given. At the same time, a pixel classification scheme based on image information scales is proposed. The proposed method is overcome that computation amount become greater and contents easily get turned. And image directional scales has excellent anti-noise performance. In the result of experiment. good efficiency is showed compare with other methods.

  • Noise occurs in the process of obtaining, transmission, and processing in image processing systems and these noises lower the resolution of image and cause visual errors. Currently, a representative filter to remove salt and pepper noise is SMF(standard median filter) but it is inadequate in preserving edge as the noise field expands. Therefore, for salt and pepper noise enviroment, the study suggested and algorithm that are places with original pixel when the central pixel is non-noise and process by applying weighted value on areas with less local mask pixel changes when there is noise.
