  • Energy as a powerful and unifying concept to understand natural world has been regarded as one of the key concepts of the science curricula in many countries. However, concerning learning and teaching of energy, various difficulties have been reported widely. This study aimed at analyzing and comparing science curricula of Korea, the U.S., England, and Singapore regarding energy to identify the potential issues for energy curriculum in the future. 2015 revised Korean science curriculum, Next Generation Science Standards of the U.S., Science programmes of study of England, and the Science syllabus of Singapore were compared based on six basic elements of the concept of energy: energy form, energy resource, energy transfer, energy transformation, energy conservation, and energy dissipation. Achievement criteria that include energy were extracted from all curricula and categorized into the six elements. The frequency and distribution of the six elements in the four curricula were compared in terms of school levels and disciplinary areas. Contents of six energy elements were also compared. Though all curricula emphasized energy as a key science concept, we found many differences in the degree of emphasis of basic ideas and specific contents and approaches. Korean curriculum is characterized by 1) high frequency concerning energy form among the elements of the concept of energy, 2) introducing energy forms of unclear meaning, which are not linked with other physical quantities, 3) emphasis on energy conversion in comparison of energy transfer, 4) focusing on mechanical energy conservation instead of more general energy conservation, and 5) absence of the concept of 'system' concerning energy. Issues for energy curriculum development were discussed.

  • This study investigated the effect of maker education on the scientific attitude and energy literacy of elementary school students. The subjects of this study were 23 6th grade students, 13 male students and 10 female students, in a B Metropolitan city elementary school. Students' scientific attitude and energy literacy was observed before and after the introduction of maker education into energy education class. The results of this study were as follows. First, energy education using maker education had a positive effect on elementary school students' scientific attitude; there was a significant improvement in curiosity, openness, critical thinking, cooperation, spontaneity, persistence, and creativity. Second, maker education had a positive effect on the energy literacy of elementary school students. There was a significant improvement in all components of energy literacy.

  • In this study, a convergence talent education program was developed and applied to elementary school students to investigate its effect on their energy literacy and creative problem-solving ability. Accordingly, a study was conducted on 29 sixth-grade elementary school students. The results of pre- and post-tests on energy literacy and creative problem-solving ability were analyzed. The results revealed that the convergence talent education program on hydraulic energy had a positive effect on the elementary school students' energy literacy as well as their creative problem-solving ability. Furthermore, after completing the hydro-energy convergence talent education program, the students' interest in energy and science increased and they wanted to connect such with their daily life. It appears that meaningful results were obtained through the convergence talent education program, specifically in the process of generating and utilizing hydraulic energy a plan was developed to allow students to solve problems in student-centered classes.

  • Integrated science for high school is required in the present Korean National Sixth Curriculum and the Seventh Curriculum which will be effective in 2002. Currently, most science teachers in secondary school have concerns about teaching integrated science subjects and this continues to raise a significant problem for practical implementation of integrated science education in schools. In this paper, we discuss two reasons for these concerns that our analysis revealed: 1) Science teachers do not understand how to implement integrated science education and 2) there are insufficient teaching-learning materials supporting integrated science. Three different approaches to integration that have been suggested to overcome the problem of implementation are outlined here. They are the knowledge centered, social problem centered, and individual interest centered approaches. Reported here are the first two steps we undertook in preparation for testing the relative effectiveness of these approaches. First, we analyzed the content of the Korean Sixth and Seventh National Science Curricula, seven Korean integrated science text books, the American National Science Education Standards, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science Benchmarks looking for common themes. We identified in the analyzed materials the common themes: energy conservation, energy transformation, energy transport, energy degradation. We then used their energy related content to organize sets of concept structures, one set for each of the three approaches. These concept structures will provide the foundations for the development of integrated teaching-learning energy plans to be used in our research into the effectiveness of the approaches.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop 'energy education' program for Creative Activities in middle school. The subject of this study was carried out with secondary student of middle school in Daegu. The development of 'energy education' program for middle school creative activies was carried out preparation, development and application. The details of each phase are as follows; The preparation phase was consised of collecting and research datas, energy education programs andliterature review for development of program. The development phase was developed through program that based on setting goals, designing of teaching-learning plans, development of materials of teaching and evaluation. The improvement phase was to modufy energy education instructional materials by running CD validity test of the expert, (2) preliminary tests and field trials of students. More than 65% of students to take class of this program agreed with the program of 'energy education' in class of creative activities was appropriate.

  • Energy saving is becoming more and more important issue due to lack of resources and limited nature. However, There is a lack of learning status on energy saving in the school field. In particular, in elementary education on energy saving was not linked to practice, and the educational effect was insufficient. Although various kinds of learning tools are utilized, many successful cases of energy saving game strategy are introduced in overseas industry field, and game design is proposed so that energy related education can be played through games. Because energy conservation can not be effective without practice, learning using games as a tool is expected to be more effective than learning based on knowledge transfer in the classroom. We propose a defense game for energy conservation education by using the mission elements, score acquisition element, time limit element, and character element which are the interesting elements of the game designed in the previous research.

  • Under the regulation of rational energy use in public institutions, it has been mandatory for educational facilities to meet the first grade or higher since 2014. Also the regulation has forced educational facilities as public institutions to use renewable energy since September 2008. Educational facilities are required to be qualified as zero-energy buildings from 2020 under the revision of the Green Building Act. In this study, we identified the current status of the building energy efficiency rating system and the renewable energy system installation for 316 educational facilities that were accredited as "building energy efficiency rating system" from February 2015 to March 2019. Also we analyzed the energy self-sufficiency rate based on energy requirements and renewable energy output. Of the 316 facilities, 12 had 1++ and 293 had 1++ for the "Building Energy Efficiency Rating System". Among the 12 facilities which had 1+++, 11 recorded ZEB level 5 or higher, and 28 out of the 293 facilities(11%) which got received 1++ had ZEB level 5. Thus, it is impossible to implement the ZEB certification system for educational facilities under the present conditions. Expanding the ratio of 1+++ and investing in renewable energy systems should be preceded.

  • The physics theory applied to the elliptical health trainers can be a good example in engineering education. From the point of view of the physics education the measurement of mechanical and thermal energy expenditure in elliptical trainers can be related to the muscle activity, quantity of motion, and metabolic cost. We realized that the low speed training is effective for high basal metabolism due to increasing the muscle activity even if the high speed training is effective for training down. Elliptical Trainer may provide an effective oxygen exhaustion and thus effective training down. However, the metabolic cost does not have much relation to the amount of training under the high speed of trainer.
