In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a limitation and implication of Social Responsibility Theory was looked into by investigating a Hutchins Report. Hutchins Report suggested the related points at moral duty and legal obligation in implementing mass media's Social Responsibility and Accountability, with relations in publics and community. However, within a view point of a lack of Accountability, Social Responsibility Theory limited responsibility to the realm of 'function', 'self-regulation' and 'self-ethics', In order to promote mass media's quality and serve to rehabilitate its reliability under the pluralistic media system, the contents of Social Responsibility and its scope should be suggested. Media Accountability is a starting point to draw out the contents and scope of Social Responsibility and also a valid democratic plan for mass media to 'social self-regulation' through the mutual communication with civil society. For future Social Responsibility and Media Accountability that is suitable for various mass media, and contents and a range should be defined.

  • There has been growing debate over the current crisis of Korean journalism especially since 1997. While identifying primary causes as 'lack of credibility and public accountability,' however, this paper claims that self-regulation initiated by enlightened and professionalized journalists is a plausible solution. This paper thus pays attention to U.S. graduate journalism schools which provide specialized program about business/economic/financial news. For this, in identifying commonalities of the programs in terms of education goals, geographical/academic resources and course works, this study wanted to elicit meaningful implications for media education. It was suggested in conclusion that not only would Seoul be an ideal place for combining theoretical and practical training, but such programs in New York and Columbia university might be creatively applied to Korean journalism school. Finally, the author hopes that this review will be a good starting point for envisioning graduate level of journalism school in Korea.

  • Press (un)fairness has been a social issue in Korea. The previous research focused mainly on the suggestion of fairness norms, principles, concepts, and definitions. Also, the research tried to measure the degree of fairness by analyzing press contents. This study attempted to overcome the media- and source-oriented approach proposing ordinary press consumers' perspectives. The study posited that one's fairness judgment would be greatly influenced by his or her preexisting attitudes on issue. Based on social judgment theory and hostile media perception framework, the research expected 'assimilation' bias for attitudinally congruent group and 'contrast' bias for attitudinally incongruent group. An $3\times3\times2$ experimental design was employed to test the theoretical predictions. The results found assimilation and contrast bias for strong attitude groups who read one-sided and two-sided messages. The results also implied hostile media perception occurred by selective categorization. Also the difficulty and limitation of traditional fairness judgment and media-centered approach was discussed.

This study analyzed the news literacy level of Korean adults according to background variables (urbanization degree, gender, age, academic background) and examined the relationship between the amount of news literacy-related practices and the level of news literacy. The results showed that the overall level of news literacy among adults in Korea was not high and that differences between groups were also statistically significant. The significant relevance between the amount of news literacy-related practices and the level of news literacy has also been identified. • Under the pressure of the selection of topics and the presentation rules of mass media, politics in media society increasingly resort to professionalized forms of theatrical staging as a means of self-portrayal. Although these staging methods are not contradictory to what is actually going on in politics, they strongly advantage the tendency to focus exclusively on the staging of an event. Through their competition for public attention, politicians have been developing sophistication regarding placement and staging of events as well as regarding factual information. In the process of this transformation, politics that are issue-related and based on binding decisions are being gradually transformed into symbolic politics. Moreover, through their appearance on TV, politicians first of all need to possess presentational skills which are not necessarily related to their political achievements. Still, presentational skills decide over the success in politics of those politicians. The reason is that a politician who possesses presentational skills is still being perceived as being successful even if his political achievements notedly lag behind. On the other hand, political achievements are being underrated if a politician lacks the talent to present himself in front of the media. “The staging of politics, “politainment”, on the stage of mass media is evolving into a key structure which is responsible for a new coinage of politics in all different kinds of dimensions: the selection of staff, the role of action programs and their impact for the legitimation of political acting, even in relation to therole of pivotal political institutions such as parties and parliaments in the political process. The TV debates during the Bundestag elections of the year 2002 and 2005 are being analyzed and judged as “staging of politics”(politainment). Self-dramatization in media society concerning media discourses about politics and political self-portrayal has become a basic principle of political communication. Self-dramatization is a vital challenge for adequate political communication and content-based orientation in our present media democracies.

This study is an exploratory attempt to get a glance on how online news media are portraying depression. The content analysis results indicate that celebrity was the most cited source, outnumbering the others such as non-celebrity patients and experts. More than half of the sample attributed the cause of depression to socio-psychological factors. Medical consultation was the most reported means of treating depression among the sample, while over the half did not suggest any treatment methods at all. Overall, celebrity related news were less likely to talk about the cause and treatment methods. In addition, the more neuro-biological factors were designated as the main cause of depression in the articles, the more chances of treatment method of all kinds were brought up. The frame of human interest dominated a little less than half of the articles examined, and only few reported positive outcome or achievements after coping with depression.
