This study was carried out to control the decrease of yield and the deterioration of quality of Angelica gigas roots by bolting. This phenomenon resulted from lignificartion and dwarfishness of roots because of bolting formed for inflorescence and fruition. Seedlings were grown for 60,90 and 120 days in nursery of the green house, and transplanted in main field to compare with traditional seedling that grew for 1 year. Growth of the petiole length compare with length and leaf width of aerial parts in nursery showed a remarkably progress, and root characters as root length, root diameter and root weight grew more vigorously in the order of nursery periods. Bolting was not entirely formed in plots transplanted the seedlings which grown for short-time; 60, 90 and 120days, but showed the high bolting rate, 64.3%,in traditional seedling plots. Yield was higher in plots that transplanted short-time growing seedlings than that transplanted traditional seedlings, and among 3 kinds of nursery periods yields were high in the order of nursery periods. For the increase of yield and decrease of bolting rate, it was needed to transplant small seedlings of 3-4g/plant which grew in nursery for 90-120 days.
This study was conducted to investigate the desalinizing effect of some vegetable crops (beet, crown daisy, kale, lettuce, spinach, sweet com, and tomato) in salinized soil. The soil was treated with highly concentrated nutrient solutions and the growth of these crops was compared and soil salinity was monitored. The plant height of lettuce and crown daisy inhibited severely in with EC $5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ salinized soil. Soil EC level was the lowest in soil where tomato was cultivated followed by corn and kale. The residual level of $NO_3$ was higher in soils used for cultivation of corn, tomato, and kale, that of K was higher in soils used for cultivation of corn, tomato, and beet, and That of $P_2O_5$ was higher in soils used for cultivation of corn and tomato. Although the desalinizing effect was greatest by tomato and corn after 60 days of cultivation. Quality of the these crops was low and the cultivation periods of these crops overlapped with that of the main crops. Kale, on the other hand showed less growth inhibition in salinized soil, greatest desalinating effect based on fresh weight. In addition this crop only needs 30 days of cultivation period. Therefore, kale was most efficient crop in desalinizing considering crop quality, a short cultivation period, and nonoverlapping cultivation time with the main crops.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of crop rotation cultivation on the suppression of garlic white rot caused by Sclerotium cepivorum in the mini plot ($2^*1^*$ 0.5 m). Six crops, soybean, sesame, mung bean, squash, crotalaria and spring onion, were previously transplanted in the mini-plots infested with S. cepivorum before garlics were planted. After cultivation of the previous crops, garlic was sown in the mini-plot. Non-cultivation plots and non-infested plots with white rot pathogen were used as control. The effect of crop rotation cultivation on the suppression of garlic white rot was evaluated by investigating comparatively the disease incidence (the percentage of infected plants) and yields. As a results, infection rate of garlic white rot was recorded lower in the non-infested plot, crotalaria and soybean cultivation than in the plot of the other crop cultivation. Especially when squash was previously cultivated and garlics were planted in 2013, infection rate of garlic white was recorded the highest score. In 2014, the infection rate of garlic white were low in the garlic on soybean, crotalaria and spring onion treatment whereas it was high in squash treatment, as well. In 2013, garlic yield was the highest in no inoculation plot, followed by crotalaria, soybean, no crop cultivation, sesami, mungbean, squash cultivation plot. In 2014, the yield in the plot of crotalaria and soybean was much higher than that in no inoculation plot. Based on above-described results, it is considered that soybean-garlic and crotalaria-garlic cultivation system can be good crop rotation systems to control garlic white rot.
This study was conducted to evaluate potential weed control in organic farming field using false seedbed and stale seedbed techniques. The experiment was conducted in open upland fields during spring and fall crop seasons. The false seedbed was prepared before 2-4 weeks of crop culture and was treated with shallow tillage or flame weeding before transplanting. The weed suppression rates of false seedbed treatment in the spring crop experiments for Chinese cabbage, soybean, hot pepper and corn were 65-73%, 50-55%, 9-55% and 8-33%, respectively. According to crop growth and yield in this experiment, the false seedbed technique has some potential weed control for Chinese cabbage, soybean and corn. The weed suppression rates of stale seedbed treatments in the fall crop experiments for Chinese cabbage, spinach and carrot were 18-39%, 40-77% and 37-38%, respectively. Weed control efficacy of the stale seedbed in this study was lower, when compared with false seedbed.

Weed communities in the dry-direct seeded rice(Oryza sativa L.), soybean(Glycine max(L.) Merr.), and dry-direct seeded rice-soybean rotation system from the transplanted rice field were investigated in order to identify a change in weed species by paddy-upland rotation. Echinochloa species was the most dominant species in the dry-direct seeded rice and their great increase was observed in the continued practices of dry-direct seeded rice. Echinochloa spp., Chenopodium ficifolium, and Digitaria spp. were identified as the major weeds in soybean cultivation in paddy field. Practice of soybean rotation in the dry-seeded rice reduced weed occurrence, particularly at the soybean after 2-yr continued dry-direct seeded rice and at dry-direct seeded rice culture after 2-yr continued dry-direct seeded rice and at dry-direct seeded rice culture after 2-yr soybean compared to the continued cultures of rice or soybean. In addition, cultivation of dry-direct seeded rice or soybean culture in the paddy rice field seemed to be helpful for suppression of perennial weeds(Eleocharis kuroguwai, Cyperus serotinus, Scirpus juncoides) and aquatic weeds(Monochoria vaginalis, Sagittaria spp. Potamogeton distinctus).
The staking cultivation (SC) of oriental melon (Cucumis mela L. var. makuwa Mak.) produced more fruit yield than that of the conventional (creeping) growing. In the SC, preharvest fruit drop rate was high as 47.6% compared to 13.0% of the conventional cultivation. However, the foliar application of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG, $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) at 2 weeks after flowering (20 days before harvest) greatly reduced fruit drops up to 10.9% without causing any effects on ripening and quality of fruits . The AVG application markedly suppressed ethylene production in harvested fruits.
Pot experiment in greenhouse was conducted to determine the effect of growth and anatomical characteristics of bensulfuron on the seedlings of rice and barnyardgrass. Formulated bensulfuron was soil applied at 102g ai/ha to rice and barnyardgrass grown under various cropping patterns at 5 days after seeding or transplanting. At 10 days after application, plants were harvested to examine growth and anatomical changes of rice and barnyardgrass. Bensulfuron did not affect the growth and development of rites under dry seeded condition and trnsplanting condition while inhibited severely those of rice under water-seeded condition compared with untreated control. Under water-seeded condition, root growth of rice was much more severely inhibited by bensulfuron than shoot growth. The herbicide retarded the growth of barnyardgrass under dry-seeded condition and more severely inhibited than that under water-seeded condition. Microscopically, the anatomical change induced by bensulfuron occurred only in barnyardgrass under dry-seeded condition, and involved constriction of leaf primordia within leaf sheaths, rupture of mesophyll cell, and irregular cell arrangement. These anatomical alterations differed from and were not associated with the differential growth response.

Effect of daminozide concentration and application methods, in combination with different planting period, on the growth of chrysanthemum was investigated for small pot-plant production. Daminozide, a plant growth regulator widely used for plant height control, was applied by drench or sub-application. For pot chrysanthemums of first planting time, plant height was reduced over $4,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, when daminozide was drenched directly into the pot medium. However, $5,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of daminozide drench affected plant height reduction for secondarily planted pot chrysanthemum. Analysis of variance revealed the plant height was affected by planting time. For sub-application experiment of daminozide, it showed that the daminozide affected the number of flower buds formation and fresh and dry weight. These results suggest that planting period affected growth retardation of chrysanthemum. Therefore, application of growth retardant in combination with planting time and application methods may provide more efficient growth control for pot-chrysanthemum production.
This experiments were conducted to determine the effect of allelopathy and autotoxicity in alfalfa. Among several alfalfa cultivars, the substances exudated from seven cultivars including Medicago sativa, c.v. Luna, Sparta, Magnum, Husky, Milkmaker, Challenger and Anchor inhibited the germination and seedling growth of radish, ranging from 60 to 80%. When allelopathic substances were exudated from the soil of the alfalfa-cultivated field, the increased levels of substance retarded the germination rate and seedling growth of radish and alfalfa. The inhibition rate was about 80%, compared with that of control. Thus, this study indicates that the allelopathy and autotoxicity substances of alfalfa influenced the germination and seedling growth in alfalfa itself and radish. When allelopathic substances were analysed by using gas chromatograph, several kinds of phenol compounds were detected as follows; Salicylic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, coumaric acid, and ferulic acid.
The inhibitory effects of methanol, ethanol, chloroform/ methanol and water extracts from natural and cultural yams on the mutagenicity in the cooked pork (broiled and panfried) and the chemically induced mutagen, sodium azide, benzo(a)pyrene and 2-aminofluorene were investigated using salmolla typhimurium TA 100. In the presence of the S9 mixture, ethanol extract from natural yam showed high inhibitory effect on the mutagenicity of the cooked pork. But benzo(a)pyrene, supposed to be produced in mutagen during cooking, did not show high inhibitory effect in same extract. Besids, the yam extract on the mutagenicity of the sodium azide without S9 mixture showed low inhibitory effect. However 2-aminoflourene with S9 mixture showed high inhibitory effect, 91.5%.
