  • This study was conducted to develop Miscanthus as a new roughage resource for ruminant animals. Miscanthus sacchariflorus var. No 1, a newly developed germtype in Korea, was harvested at late maturity stage and its effect on rumen pH, ammonia nitrogen, gas production, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and digestibility were evaluated using in vitro rumen fermentation. The effects of Miscanthus were compared with rice straw. Miscanthus showed significantly higher pH compared to rice straw (p<0.01). As for ammonia nitrogen, there was no significant difference after 12 h of incubation (p>0.05). Gas production in Miscanthus was significantly lower than that of rice straw in overall incubation time (p<0.05) after 6 h of incubation. In VFA production, acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate and total VFA production in Miscanthus were lower than those in rice straw. However, production of iso-butyrate and iso-valerate were not different in between two forage materials. Dry matter digestibility of Miscanthus was significantly lower than rice straw (p<0.05) during 12~24 h of incubation. As a result, the availability of Miscanthus as roughage source showed approximately 80% that of rice straw.

  • Miscanthus are perennial rhizomatous grasses and considered as an ideal cellulosic bioenergy crop. Recently, it was reported that Miscanthus was damaged by the larvae of rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, one of the most destructive pests of rice in Korea since the 1960s. This study was thus conducted to evaluate the insecticidal effects against rice stem borer in the Miscanthus cultivation fields for two years. The experiment consisted of four chemical agent plots, one environment-friendly agent plot, and untreated plot. Untreated plot showed significantly high damage of 50%, while Buprofezin Tebufenozide and Carbosulfan Methoxyfenozide treatment plots showed low damage rate of 2% with low larvae density of 1 and $2.3larvae\;m^{-2}$, respectively. Damage rates of Tebufenozide, ChlorantraniliproleIndoxacarb, and environment-friendly agent(MatrineWood vinegar solution) were 15, 26, and 18%, respectively, which were lower than that of untreated plot but higher than those of Buprofezin Tebufenozide and Carbosulfan Methoxyfenozide. In conclusion, rice insecticides were effective against rice stem borer in Miscanthus field. In particular, the treatments with Buprofezin Tebufenozide and Carbosulfan Methoxyfenozide showed excellent control effects with control value of 93.3 and 95.2. However, further studies with different types of insecticides should be carried out for the selection of insecticides with more effective control of rice stem borer.

  • In this study we made fuel pellet from miscanthus biomass and investigated changes of physiological characteristics and electricity consumption of pelletizing process in comparison with fuel pellet made of pine sawdust. We also examined combustion characteristics including ash content and clinker forming ratio with fuel pellet made of mixing with micanthus biomass and lime powder. Bulk density of ground-miscanthus and pine sawdust were $158g\;L^{-1}$ and $187g\;L^{-1}$, respectively. Bulk density of ground miscanthus was lower than that of pine sawdust, but increased to $653g\;L^{-1}$ after pelletizing, which was similar to $656g\;L^{-1}$ of pine sawdust pellet. Moisture content in raw miscanthus and ground miscanthus were 17.0% and 11.8%, respectively. Moisture content in ground miscanthus was similar to that of pine saw dust and decreased to 6.73% after pelletizing, which was 7.7% lower than that of pine sawdust pellet. Although $27kWh\;ton^{-1}$ were required for compaction press that was an additional process in miscanthus pelleitizing, total required electricity was $193kWh\;ton^{-1}$ which was similar to $195kWh\;ton^{-1}$ of pine sawdust pellet pelleitizing. Pellet durability and pelletizing ratio of miscanthus were 98.0% and 99.7%, respectively, which were similar to 98.1% and 99.4% of pine sawdust pellet. When lime mixing ratio increased, ash melting degree and clinker forming ratio of miscanthus pellet increased. While higher heating value and clinker forming ratio of miscanthus pellet decreased.

  • Miscanthus is a perennial energy plant that reproduces via rhizomes and has C4 metabolism. The flowering pattern of a wild type M. sacchariflorus (WTM) is affected by environmental conditions such as photoperiod and soil water status. Geodae-Uksae 1 (Geodea), which is a new M. sacchariflorus cultivar, has a lower heading rate than WMS; however the mechanism with why this happens is unknown. To confirm the effects of drought or waterlogging stresses on the growth of WTM and Geodea at the reproductive stage, we investigated variations in morphological characteristics and nutrient contents of the two Miscanthus species after four months of three water treatments. Morphological traits of the two Miscanthus species under the drought condition were similar to those under the control condition. But, the height of Geodea increased by 30% in response to the waterlogging stress. In WTM, the heading rate under the drought condition was lowest, while there was no significant difference between the waterlogging and control conditions. In the two Miscanthus species, nutrient contents, such as sucrose, total N, $P_2O_5$, K and Mg, were the highest under the drought condition, wherea Ca and Mg contents under the waterlogging condition were more than three times lower than those under the drought condition. The current study results showed that drought stress accelerated senescence and then inhibited nutrient mobilization in WTM, while waterlogging stress promoted the growth. This study is the first report to confirm that waterlogging stress promotes flowering of M. sacchariflorus.

  • In this work, the possibility of Miscanthus as renewable lignocellulosic biomass was evaluated for production of furfural. Also, to find the reaction conditions of furfural production from Miscanthus straw, the effects of solid-to-liquid ratio, reaction temperature, catalyst amount, and reaction time were investigated. Finally, 5.1 g/L furfural was produced from Miscanthus straw in the condition of solid-to-liquid ratio at 1:10, reaction temperature at $150^{\circ}C$, sulfuric acid at 3%, and reaction time of 60 minutes. This result will provide basic knowledge for converting renewable resources into valuable chemicals substituted for fossil fuels.

  • For the purpose of finding new uses for Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, this study first constructed boards with the particles of the plant and impregnated them with phenolic resin at resin impregnation rates of 30 ± 2%, 40 ± 2%, 50 ± 2%, and 60 ± 2%. The impregnated boards were then carbonized at the carbonization temperature of 800℃, after which their density and mechanical properties were examined according to the different resin impregnation rates. The results showed that density, flexural strength performance, Brinell hardness, and compressive strength increased as the resin impregnation rate increased, thus affecting the physical and mechanical properties of the ceramics made of M. sinensis var. purpurascens particles.
