  • This study was conducted in order to improvement of fishing gear and fishing operating system for anchovy boat seine by labor saving improved nets. Field experiments were carried out observe geometry of nets and fishing operating system by catcher boats. The obtained results are summarized as follows : The Vertical net opening of fore wing net, wing net, inside wing net, square, fore bag net, flapper, after bag net of the labor saving improved net according to the distance between catcher boats were varied in the range of 5.0${\sim}$7.8, 14.4${\sim}$21.1, 16.2${\sim}$21.2, 14.0${\sim}$17.3, 11.7${\sim}$13.9, 5.4${\sim}$6.9, 8.2${\sim}$9.8m respectively, varied in the range of 50${\sim}$78, 25${\sim}$36, 24${\sim}$31, 31${\sim}$38, 61${\sim}$73, 71${\sim}$91, 87${\sim}$104% of the actual ratio of net opening in each part. Labor saving improved net was performed instant net opening in fore wing net and maintained stable net opening and towing depth by means of attached net pendant. Also, it was minimized as net pocket phenomenon leading to guide anchovy for more catch by means of attached body net. The opening in accordance with distance between catcher boats and towing speed. The catch of labor saving improved net was increased than traditional net due to decrement of net resistance by improvement of bag net leading to increasement of towing speed and reduction of escape anchovy as well as improve nets of whole operation system.

  • In this study, we conducted field surveys to investigate and analyze species and length composition of catch from gape net with wings being set in two areas - Masari, Supomri - located in southern part of Jin-do for understanding fishing characteristics of gape net with wings fishery from March to September of 2011. And with those results, we attempted to propose fishery management strategy to harvest fisheries resources continuously. Catch obtained from field surveys comprised total 78 species, which accounted for 53 species of fish, 20 species of crustacean, 4 species of cephalopod and one of polychaete. As to species composition in weight, it showed that there was 88.5% for pisces, 9.0% for cephalopoda and 2.5% for crustacea. As to catch specifics by area, there was 36 species (596,891 individual, 456,551g) of pisces, 17 species (35,815 individual, 12,909g) of crustacea and 3 species (2,876 individual, 3,004g) of cephalopoda in Masari area. In Supumri area, there was 41 species (396,898 individual, 281,457g) of pisces, 15 species (16,113 individual, 7,772g) of crustacea and 4 species (6,792 individual, 72,329g) of cephalopoda and one polychaeta (36 individual, 11g). Catch of anchovy by month recorded on high level on June, July, September in both areas. When considering size composition by month, it was found that new populations recruit to these fishing grounds on June and September. Most of bycatch species including hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), dotted gizzard shad (Konosirus punctatus), conger eel (Leptocephalous), Pacific sandlance (Ammodytes personatus), horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) were juvenile, and grass puffer (Takifugu niphobles), Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis), Japanese sardinella (Sardinella zunasi) were also small in size. As a result, it is considered that gape net with wings fishery which is likely to catch juvenile needs to be set fishing prohibit period for conserving above stocks during the period excluding main fishing periods of anchovy or fisheries management such as expanding mesh size for preventing juvenile catch.

  • In order to increase fishing efficiencies of the fyke net used in the coast of Jeju Island, water tank experiment was caried out entering and escaping behavior using nets that were reduced to 1/20 of the size of the full scale fyke net and were improved to have antrance structure, and mackerel Scomber japonicus as experimental fish. The results of measurement are as follows : 1. Fish school behavior in the main net was showed two different patterns : swimming in a circle in the right space of the main net and swimming back and forth in ellipse in the right and left space. 2. The swimming speed of mackerel school was 23.9. 12.6 and 32.0cm/sec in the center space, right space of main net and in the mouth 3. The entering rate of fish school was 40% in net with 35cm length of the upper and funnel net in the mouth of fyke model net and 49% in conventional type fyke model net. 4. The escaping rate of fish school was 10% in net with 35cm length of the upper and funnel net in the mouth of fyke model net and 69% in conventional type fyke model net. 5. The remain rate of fish school was 90% in net with 35cm length of the upper and funnel net in the mouth of fyke model net and 31% in conventional type fyke model net.

  • This study was conducted in order to improvement of fishing gear and fishing operating system for anchovy boat seine by bag net A-type and B-type was attached with half size modified nets. Field experiments were carried out observe geometry of nets by catcher boats. The obtained results are summarized as follows : The actual ratio of net opening in each part of the half size modified nets was increased from fore part to back part of the nets as shown the smallest value about 20% in wing net and the biggest value about 110% in bag net. In addition, vertical net opening of B-type net as measured as 10.9~11.8m in fore bag net and 5.8~8.0m in after bag net were 1~2m greater than 9.0~13.6m of A-type one, and 2~3m less than 9.3~10.4m of A-type one, respectively. Vertical net opening of half size modified net was shown as less variation of towing depth from wing net to inside wing net than those of traditional nets due to stable vertical performance. The mesh distortion or drift and variation of vertical net opening were decreased by improvement of bag nets in order to minimized shape of net pocket phenomenon whenever towing speed is slow. Bag net B-Type attached with dual flapper was shown as less variation in width of bag net and less escapement of anchovy.

  • Escape behaviour of the anchovy (Engralius japonica, total length 4-7cm) at the inside wing net and bag net in the anchovy boat seine was observed by underwater video camera in order to clarify the relationship between visual stimulus of the gear or relative water flow inside gear and reacting behaviour. The vertical attenuation coefficient of underwater illuminance in the offshore of Keoje island and Tongyoung was ranged from 0.24 to 1.03 and it could be affect visual range and visual contrast of the fishing gear. The relative water flow at the joint part between inside wing and bagnet while towing was 1.5 times higher than at the middle part of inside wing or fore part of bag net, but it was estimated under than maximum swimming speed of 4-7 cm anchovy. The mean escaping number of anchovy from end part of inside wing of 30 cm mesh to out side for a minute within visual range of video camera was 455 and anchovy swimming forward from bag net through flapper was 308. These results revealed anchovy could escape as voluntary response in spite of higher visual stimulus or higher water flow.

  • In order to obtain the fundamental data on the auditory thresholds of fishes for catching method using low frequency sound, the auditory thresholds of coralfish Chromis notatus were measured in the presence of masking noise in the spectrum level range of 73~83dB re l$\mu$Pa/√Hz by heartbeat conditioning technique using pure tones coupled with a delayed electric shock. Critical ratios were about 23~41dB at measurement frequency, The critical ratio increased almost linearly with increasing frequency from 500Hz. The noise spectrum level at the start of masking was about 60~65dB. This suggests that hearing of coralfish is masked in the natural environment with the noise spectrum level above 60dB. The sound pressure level of which the signal sound of 300Hz is recognized by coralfish under the ambient noise is above 88dB and the critical ratio of them is above 23dB. The hearing index of coralfish with ambient noise was 81.

  • The survey was conducted to investigate biomass and distribution of fisheries resources using a quantitative echo sounder and a fixed gillnet around Marado coast of Jeju to obtain the scientific basic data for dispute resolution with a large purse seine fishery and coastal fishing and policy establishment of reasonable fisheries resources. Hydroacoustic surveys were conducted six times (November 28~29, 2015 (night), February 23~24, 2016 (night) and March 3~4, 2016 (night/day), March 30~31, 2016 (night/day)) using a quantitative echo sounder. The pelagic fish densities were relatively higher around Marado in November 2015, February 2016 and March 3~4, 2016. However, demersal fish densities were relatively higher in Jeju coastal waters on March 30~31, 2016. Catch data using fixed gill net were used to calculate biomass. Based on the hydroacoustic data, fish length-weight function and target strength information of dominant fish, the biomass of fishes were estimated as follow: 5.64 ton CV = 70.2% at night on November 28-29 2015, 7.14 ton CV = 35.8% of pelagic fish and 530.77 ton CV = 34.6% of demersal fishes at night on February 23-24 2016, 2.34 ton CV = 56.7% of pelagic fish and 571.93 ton CV = 40.3% of demersal fish at daytime, 1.39 ton CV = 48.4% of pelagic fish and 194.59 ton CV = 54.3% of demersal fish at night on March 3~4 2016, 0.37 ton CV = 72.9% of pelagic fish and 338.79 ton CV = 99.7% of demersal fish at daytime, 0.24 ton CV = 21.3% of pelagic fish and 68.61 ton CV = 53.8% of demersal fish at night on March 30~31 2016.

  • This paper aims to i) introduce the characteristics of HF ocean radar and the major results and information produced by the radar networks in the Korean coasts to the readers, ii) make an up-to-date inventory of the existing radar systems, and iii) share the information related to the radar operating skill and the ocean current data application. The number of ocean radars has been showing a significant growth over the past 20 years, currently deploying more than 44 radars in the Korean coasts. Most of radars are in operation at the present time for the purposes related to the marine safety, tidal current forecast and understanding of ocean current dynamics, mainly depending on the mission of each organization operating radar network. We hope this overview paper may help expand the applicability of the ocean radar to fisheries, leisure activity on the sea, ocean resource management, oil spill response, coastal environment restoration, search and rescue, and vessel detection etc., beyond the level of understanding of tidal and ocean current dynamics. Additionally we hope this paper contributes further to the surveillance activity on our ocean territory by founding a national ocean radar network frame and to the domestic development of ocean radar system including signal processing technology.

  • This paper was described on the characteristics of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) whistle to develop a warning and attracting acoustic system which can be made friends woith environment and minimized to the fishing pollution from Cetaceans. The experiment for the acoustics of bottlenose dolphin whistle was carried out in dolphin performance hall at Seoul Grand Park during 18th~19th April, 2002. The frequency and the spectrum level of whistle a same pool were revealed 6~10KHz and 85㏈ but those revealed two harmonic waves a 6.7KHz and 21.3KHz for the frequency and 110㏈ and 94㏈ for the spectrum level, respectively, when a dolphin isolated from others. The range of frequency change of whistle was 3.86KHz and continuous time was 0.08 sec. The range of frequency change 10.20 KHz higher as 14.06 KHz and continuous time was 0.11sec longer as 0.19sec when a dolphin isolated from others. By the Mann-Whitney test for the result, there was a significant difference for the range of frequency change and continuous time between normal condition and when a dolphin was isolated from others. The pattern of whistle at the dolphin performance hall was five types and the frequency was getting increased slowly in the range of 5~10KHz at normal condition but there were pattern change of 5~20KHz at the isolated condition. Therefore it is thought that these experiments would be valuable for the development of acoustic system.
