This study investigated the early life history of the Boleophthalmus pectinirostris living in the southern coastal Yeoja-man and compared the results with the same Gobiidae fishes. The brood stork used in the study were captured with bare hands in the tidal flats of Beolgyo-eup, Jeollanam-do, in June 2015. The amount of spawning was 411~11,688, and the eggs were short oval and the size was 1.40×0.72 mm. The time of hatched took 91 hours and 35 minutes at a water temperature of 25~27℃. Newly hatching larvae, the yolk sac had a total length of 3.02~3.31 (average 3.17±0.08, n=30) mm and did not eat rotifer. 4 days after hatching, the total length was 3.31~3.52 (3.43±0.07, n=30) mm, and as the mouth and anus opened, the fish transitioned to the preflexion larvae and fed. 14 days after hatching, the total length was 5.06~5.25 (5.16±0.06, n=30) mm, and the distal end of the vertebra was completely bent at 45° and the transitioned to the postflexion larvae. 41 days after hatching, the total length was 14.3~16.8 (15.4±0.85 mm, n=30), and the number of fins reached an integer of 5 first dorsal fins, 26~27 second dorsal fins, 24~27 anal fins, and 6 ventral fins, and the transitioned to the juveniles. As a result of the study, star-shaped melanophore were deposited from the front of the pectoral fin to the base of the caudal fin, which distinguished them in form from other postflexion larvae of Gobiidae fishes.

Hemitripterus villosus, a promising aquaculture fish species, is facing declining stocks. This study aims to provide normative standards for skeletal development to address persistent skeletal deformities in farmed fish. Specimens utilized in the study underwent artificial insemination with captured fish, and the resulting larvae and fry were preserved in a formalin solution. The skeletal ossification process commenced immediately after hatching, affecting the parasphenoid, premaxillary, maxillary, and dentary structures at an average total length of 13.65±0.71 mm (n=5). By sixty-five days post-hatching, ossification extended to the ethmoid and supraorbital, completing the head's development at an average total length of 21.24±0.50 mm (n=5). Clavicle ossification occurred at seven days post-hatching, corresponding to an average total length of 14.61±0.52 mm (n=5). At forty-four days post-hatching, the ossification of 4 actinosts took place, completing the shoulder girdle, with an average total length of 18.15±0.61 mm (n=5). Vertebral ossification initiated at ten days post-hatching, with an average total length of 14.80±0.65 mm (n=5). By fifty-four days post-hatching, 39 vertebral columns were ossified, reaching an average total length of 18.67±0.54 mm (n=5). Vertebral development was complete at sixty days post-hatching, with an average total length of 20.25±0.45 mm (n=5). This study sheds light on the skeletal development of H. villosus, providing valuable standards and fundamental data for understanding skeletal deformities in this species.
Spawning behavior of the Takifugu pardarlis (Temminck et Schlegel) was observed on the Jook-do coast in Tongyong from March 1997 to June 1999. The spawning ground was locted in the intertidal zone between Tongyong and Koje-do. Its bottom was mainly gravels and stones, and its depth was 0.5~1.0 m. Spawning season was from the end of the March to the middle of May. During the spawning season, the mature fishes formed school a of 10~30 individuals, then moved to the spawning ground together. When a mature female spawned eggs, the attendant males fertilized them at the same time. The fertilized eggs obtained from the parent fishes caught at the spawning ground were adhesive, opaque and spherical, measuring 1.14~1.24 mm (mean 1.19 mm, n = 50) in diameter with numerous tiny oil globules. Hatching period was about 205 hours after fertilization at water temperature of $18.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were 2.92~3.10 mm (mean 3.01 mm, n = 20) in total length (TL), had a large yolk, and 11~13+14~15 = 25~28 myomeres. At 5 days, the larvae had attained 3.79~3.85 mm (mean 3.82 mm, n = 20) in TL and had transformed into the postlarval stage. At 15 days, the postlarvae had attained 7.78~7.90 mm (mean 7.84 mm, n = 20) in TL. At 21 days, had larvae attained 10.15~10.27 mm (mean 10.21 mm, n = 20) in TL and had reached the juvenile stage. All fins were formed with a complete set of fin rays having the following counts: dorsal fin rays 11~12; anal fin rays 9; pectoral fin rays 14~15; caudal fin rays 11~12.

Early sexual maturation through temperature stimulation was induced in female and male of yezo scallop. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) in female showed $9.12{\pm}2.9$ in January, $14.89{\pm}2.9$ in February and $21.3{\pm}1.4$ in March in experiment I. GSI in experiment I showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) and in experiments II and III were not show significant variations (P > 0.05). It also showed significant between the control and the experiments I, II, and III in February (P < 0.05) measurements. Experiment I has showed good results in sexual maturation and spawning when compared with other experiments II and III and the control. Histological observation showed that ovary condition was in a growing stage in all the experiments I, II, and III. In February, ovary condition through histological observation was a late mature stage in all the experiments I, II, and III except the control of a growing stage. GSI and gonad weight were $4.4{\pm}0.88$ and 2.8 g, respectively in November whereas it was $15.1{\pm}2.8$, and 11.7 g, respectively in January and $21.7{\pm}5.4$, and 19.4 g, respectively in February after rearing at a water bath of $12^{\circ}C$ depending on the condition of experiment I. It was possible early releasing of eggs and sperms of yezo scallop in February instead of the middle of April to the end of May being spawning period. Fertilized eggs have become a gastrula stage through a spiral cleavage and then become a trochophore larvae after 36 hours. After 10 days, D-shaped larvae have changed into an umbo stage larvae and attached to juveniles in the post larvae after 20-23 days.
In this study, genetic variation in the 5 strains of 2N-cont, meiotic-G2N, mitotic-G2N and two types of clones with different genetic backgrounds was investigated by developing their tolerance to water temperature and salinity, which is a physiological trait, into a quantitative trait. The temperature was set at 19$^{\circ}C$, 22.5$^{\circ}C$, 25$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$, each of which was combined with 0$\textperthousand$, 15$\textperthousand$ and 30$\textperthousand$ of salinity respectively, making 12 groups in all. In the mean survival time (MST), samples with 15$\textperthousand$ of salinity showed the longest survival time at all temperatures. The 2N-cont had the longest 126.16 h followed by clone-11 and clone-15 surviving for 113.22 h and 91.05 h respectively. Gynogenetic diploids showed the shortest 87,32 h and 36.56 h. At 22.5 and 25$^{\circ}C$, MST of each strain was significantly short, showing similar results to those of the groups at 19$^{\circ}C$. The 2N-cont had the longest MST while clones had a longer MST than gynogenetic diploids. This could be due to gynogenesis which causes homozygosis among malignant harmful genes, leading to its appearance in populations and resulting in early death in individuals with such genes. On the other hand, MST of clones was longer than that of gynogenetic fish. This could be because the 1st gynogenetic generation, which is a parental population, has already had its malignant genes removed, while the clones of the 2nd gynogenetic generation have had their superior genes fixed as well as their tolerance and survival improved. When temperature was raised to 22.5$^{\circ}C$ and 25$^{\circ}C$, increase in variation was observed in gynogenetic diploids and decrease in clones in 15$\textperthousand$ of salinity. This shows that such a trait is genetic to a certain extent. Consequently, if this character is developed into a quantitative trait and applied to selective breeding, it could be a useful character to secure superior strains and individuals, and also it would be possible to improve populations genetically through selection.
A total of 1,200 eggs obtained from 312-day-old Hy-line Brown laying breeder hens and 319-day-old Hy-line Brown commercial laying hens (600 eggs obtained from each one) at same day were used to investigate the effects of egg storage, storage temperature, and insemination of hens on the change of albumen height, Haugh unit(HU), albumen pH, shell strength, and yolk color. Eggs were stored up to 14 days after lay at $3^{\circ}C$ or $10^{\circ}C$ and sampled one day after stored and then 24 hours interval. Longer periods of storage resulted in lower albumen height and HU at both storage temperatures, but in higher albumen pH. The eggs stored at $3^{\circ}C$ were significantly (P<0.05) higher in HU and lower in albumen pH than the ones stored at $10^{\circ}C$. The eggs obtained from the non-inseminated-hens were significantly (P<0.05) higher in albumen height, HU, and albumen pH than the eggs obtained from the inseminated-hens. Whereas, the eggs obtained from the non-inseminated-hens in the mean albumen pH of eggs stored at $3^{\circ}C$ were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the ones obtained from the inseminated-hens, but the mean albumen pH of eggs stored at 10^{\circ}C did not differ each other. The mean shell strength of the eggs obtained from the inseminated-hens was significantly (P<0.05) stronger than that of the eggs obtained from the non-inseminated-hens at both storage temperatures. Albumen height and albumen pH were negatively correlated $(P<0.01\~0.001)$ in both inseminated and non-inseminated-hen's egg groups. The degree of yolk colors was not significantly changed overall of the experimental periods in both storage temperatures. The study suggests that the change of egg freshness such as albumen height and HU is relatively more associated with storage period and storage temperature than insemination or non-insemination of hens.
Purpose : This study aimed to investigate whether exogenous thyroxine($T_4$) treatment to alcohol-fed dams would ameliorate the detrimental effects of alcohol on the postnatal development of neuropeptide-Y(NPY)-containing neurons of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus of the offspring. Methods : Time-pregnant rats were divided into three groups. An alcohol-fed group A received 35 calories of liquid alcohol diet daily from gestation day 6; control group B was fed a liquid diet in which dextrin replaced alcohol isocalorically; and alcohol+$T_4$ group C received 35 calories of liquid alcohol diet and exogenous thyroxine subcutaneously. The features of the growth and maturation of rat brain tissue were observed at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 postnatal days via immunohistochemistry. Results : Group C showed prominent NPY immunoreactivity in the cerebral cortex compared to group A and B at P7. In group C, NPY-containing neurons were widely distributed in the all layers of cerebral cortex after P14. Also, numerical decreases of NPY-containing neuron were not found according to increasing age in group C. A decrease of NPY-containing neurons, however, was clearly observed in group A compared to group C at P28. In the hippocampus, similar patterns appeared in groups B and C after P7. Especially, in groups B and C, NPY-containing fibers formed plexus in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus at P14. Conclusion : These results suggest that the increase of NPY synthesis caused by maternal administration of exogenous thyroxine may convalesce fetal alcohol effects, one of the effects of the dysthyroid state following maternal alcohol abuse.

This experiment was conducted to determined the optimum planting density for the production of high quality bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) adapted in spring cultivation with the unheated greenhouse condition. 'Erave' variety was planted at three different planting densities (235, 305, $380plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) on March 26. The training method was six lateral vines with pinching the main one. The light intensity was lower in the higher planting density than the lower one. Net photosynthetic rates of the bitter gourd leaves in the higher density were significantly lower (41 to 71%) than the lower one. There was no difference in the fruit characteristics among treatments. But the root weight was heavier in the lower planting density ($235plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) as 113.1g than 96.0g of the higher planting density ($380plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$). The number of the harvested fruit also higher in the lower planting density ($235plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) with 60.7 than 39.9 of the higher planting density ($380plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$). The average fruit weight was the highest in the plot of $305plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ as 338.7g and lowest in the lower planting density ($235plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) as 285.2g. The total yield of $305plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ density was $5,359kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$, which was higher than $4,068kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ of the lower planting density ($235plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$). Marketable yield was increased by 24% in the planting density of $305plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$($4,767kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) as compared to the lower density in $235plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$($3,629kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and increased by 13% in the planting density as $380plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$($4,137kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$). Therefore, the planting density of bitter gourd was desirable in $305plants{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ density for the higher yield and quality in the protected cultivation.
Background: We tested the technical feasibility of fetal cardiac bypass and collected baseline data on the fetal hemodynamics and placental functions related to the cardiopulmonary bypass in the fetal lamb model. Material and Method: Eleven fetuses at 120 to 150 days of gestation were subjected to bypass via trans-sternal approach with a 12 G pulmonary arterial cannula and 14 to 18 F venous cannula for 30 minutes. All ewes received general anesthesia with ketamine. In all the fetuses, no anesthetic agents were used except muscle relaxant. Eight served as a group in which placenta was excluded from the extracorporeal circulation by clamping the umbilical cord during the bypass(the oxygenator group) and in the remaining three, the placenta worked as the only source of oxygen supply(the placenta group). Observations were made every 10 minute during a 30-minute bypass and 30-minute post bypass period. No prostaglandin inhibitors were used both in ewes and in fetuses. Result: Weights of the fetuses ranged from 1.9 to 5.2 kg. In the oxygenator group, means of arterial pressure, PaO2, atrial pressure, heart rate, and bypass flow rate ranged 69.8 to 82.6 mmHg, 201.7 to 220.9 mmHg, 4.1 to 4.3 mmHg, 169 to 182/min, and 140.3 to 164.0 ml/kg/min, respectively during bypass, but rapid deterioration of the fetal cardiac functions and the placental gas exchange was observed after the cessation of bypass. In the placenta group, means of arterial pressure decreased from 44.7 to 14.4 mmHg and means of PaCO2 increased from 61.9 to 129.6 mmHg during bypass. Flow rate was suboptimal(74.3 to 97.0 ml/kg/min) during bypass. All hearts fibrillated immediately after the discontinuation of bypass. Conclusion: In this study, the technical feasibility of fetal cardiopulmonary bypass was confirmed in the fetal lamb model. However, further studies with modifications of the bypass including an addition of prostaglandin inhibitor, an application of the total spinal anesthesia on the fetus, a creation of more concise bypass circuit, and a use of active pump are mandatory to improve the outcome.
Purpose: This study was peformed to Investigate apoptosis by radiation In the developing fetal rat brain. Materials and Methods: Fetal blains were Irradiated In utero between the 17th and 19th days of fetal life (El7-19) by linear accelerator. A dose of Irradiation ranging from 1 Gy to 4 Gy was used to evaluate dose dependency. To test time dependency the ra)s were Irradiated with 2 Gy and then the fetal brain specimens were removed at variable 41me course; 1, 3, 5, 12 and 24 hours after the onset of irradiation. Immunohistochemlcal staining using in situ 707-mediated dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) technlfue was used for apoptotic cells. The cerebral cortex, including three zones on coriicai zone (Cf). Intermediate zone (if), and ventricular zone (VZ), was examined. Results : TUNEL positive cells revealed typical features of apoptotic cells under light microscope In the fetal rat cerebral cortex. Apoptotic cells were not found In the cerebral cortex of non-Irradiated fetal rats, but did appear In the entire cerebral cortex after 1 Gy Irradiation, and were more expensive at the ventricular and Intermediate zones than at the cortical zone. The extent of apoptosis was Increased with Increasing doses of radiation. Apoptosis reached the peak at S hours after the onset of 2 Gy Irradiation and persisted until 24 hours. Conclusion: Typical morphological features of apoplosis by irradiation were observed In the developing fetal rat cerebral cortex. It was more extensive at the ventricular and Intermediate zones than at the cortical zone, which suggested that stem cells or early differentiated cells are more radiosensitive than differentiated cells of the cortical zone.
