  • It is the purpose of this study to help computational estimation study to settle down in effective teaching method through analysis how students are understanding computational estimation and what occurs using computational estimation in actual life problem situations. I set 3 cases to accomplish these purposes. (1) How students are understanding computational estimation? (2) How students' computational estimation ability is in applying actual life problem situation? (3) What is students' different attitudes in an actual life problem situation before studying computational estimation and after? To accomplish tile purpose, I chose 6 third grade students and taught 'Computational estimation using actual life problem situation' and analyzed students computational estimation processing. Then I arranged the computational estimation processing in an actual life problem situation and differences between the before and tile after. As a result, I obtained the followings. (1) Need of estimation: Every students could recognize the need of estimation with experiencing an actual life problem situation. (2) Choosing the order of decimals: Students could choose appropriate order of decimals according to an actual life problem situations. (3) Using strategy: They usually use rounding strategy and quite often use special number and compatible number strategy.

  • This article presents the effects of estimation activities related to speed and density on students' concept-understanding, answer-prediction, and answer-calculation in problem solving procedure with quantitative and qualitative methods. Participants were one hundred and ninety two seventh graders from one coeducational school in Seoul. Half of them participated in the estimation activities and the other half did in the measurement activities. Discussions of three students during estimation activities on density and their post-interviews were tape-recorded. Pre- and post-assessment scores were analyzed for the whole classes, and students' discussions and interviews served this research as evidences for the case analysis. Results of scores indicated that students in the estimation activities were significantly better than those in the measurement activities for predicting answers, but not for understanding concepts. Analysis of the cases revealed that estimation activity helped them to understand the relations of mass, volume and density, empirically, which enhanced their prediction ability. Furthermore, the ability could help a student with low calculation ability to comprehend the calculation problems. Thus, it is concluded that estimation activities could influence students' empirical learning on quantitative concepts, which enhanced their prediction ability.

  • In real life, the concepts of number range and approximation are frequently used. These concepts are closely related to various mathematical concepts, and the need for research on the defining and learning of these related terms is emphasized. The learning contents of seven mathematical terms related to the range of numbers and approximation were analyzed, focusing on the definition of terms and the context of real life. As a result of analyzing the contents of 10 currently used elementary school mathematics textbooks, the lessons were organized according to the achievement standards presented in the curriculum, but the composition and order, real-life context, examples used in definitions, and the highlighted parts and directions of the activities varied depending on the author's intent. Based on the analysis results, implications for textbook writing and classroom instruction were presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of estimation strategy on placing decimal point in multiplication and division of decimals. To examine the effects of improving calculation ability and reducing decimal point errors with this estimation strategy, the experimental research on operation with decimal was conducted. The operation group conducted the decimal point estimation strategy for operating decimal fractions, whereas the control group used the traditional method with the same test paper. The results obtained in this research are as follows; First, the estimation strategy with understanding a basic meaning of decimals was much more effective in calculation improvement than the algorithm study with repeated calculations. Second, the mathematical problem solving ability - including the whole procedure for solving the mathematical question - had no effects since the decimal point estimation strategy is normally performed after finishing problem solving strategy. Third, the estimation strategy showed positive effects on the calculation ability. Th Memorizing algorithm doesn't last long to the students, but the estimation strategy based on the concept and the position of decimal fraction affects continually to the students. Finally, the estimation strategy assisted the students in understanding the connection of the position of decimal points in the product with that in the multiplicand or the multiplier. Moreover, this strategy suggested to the students that there was relation between the placing decimal point of the quotient and that of the dividend.

  • The focus of this article is the strategies young children use to solve rectangular covering tasks before they have been taught area measurement. seventy nine children from Grade 1 to 4 were observed while they solved various array-based tasks, and their drawing and explanation were collected and analyzed. Children's solution strategies were classified into incomplete covering, inadequate array, array constructed from moveable unit, measurement of one dimension, measurement of two dimension, and calculation. Implications for the learning of area measurement are addressed.

  • Outlier detection and treatment process is highly required as the first step for the statistical analysis of the monitoring data having many outliers frequently occurred in the coastal environmental monitoring projects. In this study, the outlier detection method using the approximate and detail (or residual) components of the (raw) data is suggested. The approximate and detail components of the data can be separated by the diverse filtering and smoothing methods. The decomposition of the data is carried out by the harmonic analysis and local regression curve, respectively. Then, the Grubbs' test and modified z-score method widely used to detect outliers in the data are applied to the detail components of the water temperature data. The new data set is reconstructed after removed the outliers detected by these methods. It can be shown that the suggested process is successfully applied to the outlier detection of the coastal water temperature monitoring data provided by the Real-time Information System for Aquaculture Environment, National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI).

  • This study examined the effects of estimation activities on children's operation and measurement abilities. Subjects were 60 five-year-old children. This experiment used the untreated control group design with pretest and posttest. Instruments used to collect data were the Number and Operation and Measurement tests part of the Test of Mathematics Ability for Young Children (TMAYC) developed by Hong, Lee and Chung (2006). ANCOVA was employed for statistical analysis. Results of the posttest showed that children in the experimental group scored significantly higher on children's operation and measurement abilities than the control group. Results imply that an estimation program can be an effective teaching model for improving children's operation and measurement abilities.

  • Warpage of the film insert molded (FIM) part is caused by an asymmetric residual stress distribution. Asymmetric residual stress and temperature distribution is generated by the retarded heat transfer in the perpendicular direction to the attached film surface. Since warpage was not prevented by controlling injection molding conditions, glass fiber (GF) filled composites were employed as substrates for film insert molding to minimize the warpage. Distribution of short GFs was evaluated by using micro-CT equipment. Proper models for micro mechanics, anisotropic thermal expansion coefficients, and closure approximation should be selected in order to calculate fiber orientation tensor and warpage of the FIM part with the composite substrate. After six kinds of micro mechanics models, three models of the thermal expansion coefficient and five models of the closure approximation had been considered, the Mori-Tanaka model, the Rosen and Hashin model, and the third orthotropic closure approximation were selected in this study. The numerically predicted results on fiber orientation tensor and warpage were in good agreement with experimental results and effects of GF reinforcement on warpage of the FIM composite specimen were identified by the numerical results.

  • This study aimed to derive pedagogical implications by comparing and analyzing how the concept of pi is taught in 10 different elementary mathematics textbooks, which are scheduled to be applied from 2023. We developed a textbook analysis framework by previous studies on the concept of pi and the teaching of pi, and analyzed in terms of three instructional elements (i.e. inferring conceptsof pi, understanding properties of pi, and applying relationships). We derived the need to emphasize various contexts for estimation of pi, presentation of problem situations that provide motivation to actually measure diameters and circumferences, providing an opportunity to explore the properties of measurement, and an experience the flexibility of selecting an approximate value of pi. Based on the above conclusions and pedagogical implications through the research results., we suggested ways to teach the concept of pi in elementary mathematics and improvement points for developing textbooks focusing on the context of introduction of pi and the use of technological tools.
