  • In this study, the effect of zwitterionic surfactant on Cu electrodeposition was investigated through cyclic voltammetry. With the addition of (dodecyldimethylammonio)propanesulfonate (DDAPS) as a representative zwitterionic surfactant in the electrolyte for Cu electrodeposition, the electrochemical Cu2+ reduction was inhibited on Cu and glassy carbon electrodes. Its inhibition effect was similar to that of cationic surfactant rather than anionic surfactant. Moreover, DDAPS interacted with chloride ion and exhibited the mass transfer-dependent inhibition behavior, which indicates that its inhibition function is associated with the formation of its surface aggregates on anion-covered Cu surface. In addition, adsorbed DDAPS slightly reduced the surface roughness of Cu electrodeposits. These characteristics were similar to those of cationic surfactant, but less obvious. It means the effect of DDAPS on Cu electrodeposition originates from the cationic head group which is shield by anionic head group.

  • In this study, we investigated the solubilization 4-chlorobenzoic acid in a wide range of temperature using a zwitterionic surfactant of lauryl sulfobetaine(LSB) and mixed surfactant systems. The effects of temperature and alkyl-group's length of surfactant molecule on the solubilization of 4-chlorobenzoic acid have been measured. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) were taken by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method, plotting the total absorbance of the solution versus the surfactant concentration. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^o_s$ are all negative within the measured temperature range and decrease by increasing temperature, And also the measured values of ${\Delta}H^o_s$ and ${\Delta}S^o_s$ are all positive and increase by increasing temperature. The values of $K_s$ and thermodynamic parameters are simultaneously dependent on the temperature and the kinds of surfactant molecules. From the results we can postulate the solubilization site of 4-chlorobenzoic acid within the micelle.

  • The solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid in aqueous solutions of pure cationic, nonionic, amphoteric, and their mixed surfactant systems have been measured by the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The effects of hydrophobic tail-group with different chain length and the hydrophilic head-group on the solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid have been studied and also thermodynamic parameters have been calculated from the dependence of Ks values on the temperature. The results show that the values of ΔGo for the solubilization by all surfactant systems are negative and the values of ΔHo and ΔSo are all positive.

  • The variations of molar conductivity of various surfactants such as sodium caprylate, sodium laurate, sodium palmitate, sodium stearate, sodium oleate, sodium dodecyl sulphate, and lithium dodecyl sulphate with concentrations of the surfactants for each of the solutions consisting of mixtures of varying concentrations of N-methyl acetamide in water at constant temperature of $30{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ were studied. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) for each surfactant is measured. It is found that the CMC values in mixtures of N-methyl acetamide and water solutions of various surfactants are lower than the CMC values in water, and the driving force for micelle formation correlates with solvophobicity. The surfactant-solvent interactions that drive amphiphilic self-organization in N-methyl acetamide in water are discussed. Thermodynamic parameters were evaluated for micellar system to explain the results.

  • In order to investigate the effects of supplemental ionic surfactants in in vitro ruminal fermentation, N-Lauroylsarcosine sodium salt(N-LSS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) for negative(-) ionic surfactant, and hexadecylpyridinium chloride monohydrate(HPCM) and hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(HTAB) for positive (+) ionic surfactant were supplemented by 0.05% and 0.1% into the Dehority’s artificial medium containing rice straw(1mm) as a substrate. In vitro DM digestibility, the growth of rumen mixed microbes, pH, cumulative gas production and SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) observation of microbial attachment on rice straw particle were investigated through the experiment composing 9 treatments (two supplemental levels of two positive ionic(+) surfactant, two supplemental levels of two negative(-) ionic surfactant) including the control. The sample collection was at 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h post fermentation with 3 replications per treatments. DM digestibility in treatments supplemented (+) or (-) surfactants almost stopped afterward 12 h fermentation, in vitro DM digestibility at 72 h post fermentation in the ionic surfactants was at half level of that of the control(P<0.05). Accumulative gas production in in vitro was less(P<0.05) with addition of ionic surfactants compared to the control. The amount of rumen mixed microbes recovered from in vitro incubation fluid pleateaued at 12 h post fermentation for the positive (+) ionic surfactants, but steadily increased as fermentation time elapsed for the control. Rumen microbial growth rate was significantly(P<0.05) low in the negative(-) ionic surfactant compared to the control. pH of the incubation fluid was ranged from 6.02 to 7.20, and was the highest in the negative(-) ionic surfactants, and was the lowest in the control(P<0.05). In SEM observation, rumen microbial population attached on rice straw particle was less with addition of ionic surfactants than the control. In conclusion we could not found any positive effects of negative- and positive- charged surfactants on rumunal fermentation characteristics and rumen microbial growth rates.

  • Surfactants are organic compounds that have both hydrophilic and non-polar parts in one molecule, classified as non-ion, anion, cation, and amphoteric surfactants according to the charge of hydrophilic parts in aqueous state. A trace amounts may remain when vegetables and fruits are washed using type1 detergent (Vegetable and fruit detergent), and there is a possibility of exposure to the human body through ingestion. This study developed the simultaneous analysis method for 5 surfactants with LC-MS/MS for analysis of detergent residues after washing vegetables and fruits with detergent. The mobile phase used distilled water and acetonitrile containing 50 mM ammonium formate and 0.1% formic acid and was analyzed using a gradient method using XBridge BEH C8 column. The accuracy of the established method was 83.9-112.1%, and the precision was less than 20%. The detection limit was 7.0 (SLS) to 29.0 (SLES-N3) ㎍/L, and the correlation coefficient (r2) of calibration line regression was greater than 0.99, it is considered suitable for the analysis of trace amounts of surfactant components remaining in vegetables and fruits.

  • For any conceivable desalination process using the gas hydrate formation, the kinetics has to be one of the most important parameters from the economic point of view. We thus were to improve the kinetics of the R-134a (also known as HFC-134a) gas hydrate formation by using promoters and three different kinds of edible surfactants were selected for the desalination process targeted to produce potable water; κ-carrageenan, lecithin, and polysorbate 80 among anionic, amphoteric, and nonionic surfactants, respectively. Then, the kinetics change of the R-134a hydrate formation was monitored by varying the surfactant concentration. Experimental results demonstrated that the rate of R-134a hydrate formation increases with the addition of edible surfactants in general and the effect as a promotor has an order of polysorbate 80 > κ-carrageenan > lecithin. As a supportive measure, the atomic charges of each surfactant were calculated by using a DFT (density functional theory)-based molecular modeling and the results showed a positive relationship between the promotor effect of each surfactant and the number of oxygens available for hydrogen bonding and the negativity of their atomic charge values.

  • On the basis of theory of Bratsch's electronegativity equalization the electronegativity equalization the group electronegativities and the group partial charges for cationic and amphoteric surface and amphoteric surfactants could be calculated using Pauling's electronegativity parameters. From calculated output we have investigated relationships between CMC(critical micelle concentration) and partial charge and group electronegativity of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups structural stability of micelle for cationic and amphoteric surfactants. As a result CMC depends upon partial charge and electronegativity of hydrophilic group is decreased. With increasing the carbon number of hydrophilic group for cationic surfactant its partial charge is increased but CMC and its electronegativity are decreased. With increasing the carbon number of hydrophobic group for cationic and amphoteric surfactant its partial charge is increased but CMC andits electronegativity are decreased.

  • Nine kinds of amphoteric surfactants were derived from 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-undecyl-2-imidazoline. Their surface activities including surface tension and isoelectric points were measured in aqueous solution and critical micelle concentration(cmc) was also evaluated by the measurement of surface tension. From the measurement of surface tension, carboxylated amides revealed to be 26~40dyne/cm at $4.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.0{\times}10^{-3}mol/{\ell}$, sulfonated or sulfated imidazolines, 30~35 dyne/cm at $1.5{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}2.5{\times}10^{-3}mol/{\ell}$ and sulfonated amides, 25~33 dyne/cm at $5.8{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}8.0{\times}10^{-4}mol/{\ell}$ concentration range. It was found that isoelectric points of carboxylated amides were pH 7.2~7.9 and those of sulfonated or sulfated imidazolines and sulfonated amides were pH 4.5~5.5.
